Richard Chartier is a sound/installation artist and graphic designer. He has
created critically acclaimed recordings for labels such as 12k/LINE,
Raster-Noton, Spekk, ERS and Fallt. He has collaborated with artists
including Taylor Deupree, William Basinski, and COH and has appeared on
numerous international compilations.

His digital minimalist work explores the inter-relationships between the
spatial nature of sound, focus, and the act of listening.

In 2000 he formed the recording label LINE with Taylor Deupree. The label
continues to document compositional and installation work, by international
sound artists and composers, exploring the aesthetics of contemporary and
digital minimalism. The premiere release on LINE, Chartier's Series was
awarded Honorable Mention in the category of Digital Music by the
prestigious Prix Ars Electronica, 2001 (Austria).

This is the inaugural Symbiosis Listening Focus. Encouraging the audience to
engage with the sound textures and providing the environment to absorb some
very special performances.

Richard will treat Melbourne audiences to a very special show at West Space.
The rare quiet of the gallery atmosphere will play witness to a focused
sonic event, clear of sound pollution. Melbourne artists Robin Fox, with his
superb laser-sound show, and Ai Yamamoto, in a rare live performance, round
out a night of superb performance.
