These artists conjure systems of relations between objects in the world and their media representations, often manipulating both in the moment of live performance. Performance by John Hudak and Kurt Ralske Monday, October 9, 2006, 7pm LMAKprojects 526 West 26th Street, #310, NYC Admission is free John Hudak hypnogoge sound and video performance Kurt Ralske For Phillip Guston At Half-Speed sound and video performance ---------------------- About the artists: John Hudak has been interested in sound and music from the age of four when he began to play a variety of instruments. At the University of Delaware (BA, English 1981) and Naropa Institute for the Arts (1979), he studied video, photography, creative writing and dance. He then began to create taped soundtracks for his solo performance art pieces. In recent years, he has concentrated on sound, particularly natural sounds. Hudak's current sound work focuses on the minimalism and repetition of sounds below the usual threshold of hearing, sounds that are filtered out or considered non-musical. These sounds are recorded, deconstructed and processed, their rhythms and textures being the basis for aural manipulations. hypnogoge Utilizing aspects of sound and body movement, my performance will dwell upon the place between waking and sleeping, where the conscious and the unconscious mind overlaps, leaving the two parts to intermingle. The give and take of what is known and what is remembered presents interesting juxtapositions that the driving hyper- aware cognitive part wouldn't necessarily think to make. ---------------------- Kurt Ralske's video installations and performances are created exclusively with his own custom software. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Guggenheim Bilbao, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art. Kurt programmed and co-designed a 9-channel video installation that is permanently in the lobby of the MoMA in NYC. In 2003, his work received First Prize at the Transmediale International Media Art Festival in Berlin, as a member of the video ensemble 242.pilots. He is also the author/programmer of Auvi, a popular video software environment in use by artists in 22 countries. Kurt resides in New York City. He teaches at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the School of Visual Arts, New York. For Phillip Guston At Half-Speed Composer Morton Feldman (1926 - 1987) described parallels between his music and the rough, irregular patterns of certain antique Turkish carpets. Artist Kurt Ralske's video performance/installation "For Phillip Guston At Half-Speed" uses images of these carpets as a point of departure. Static images are animated via a series of processes modeled on various natural phenomena. The video clarifies the connection between sound and image, and provides an entry point to total immersion in Feldman's world of repetition, evolution, sound and silence. "All we composers really have to work with is time and sound - and sometimes I'm not even sure about sound." -- Morton Feldman ------------------------- LMAKprojects 526 West 26th Street # 310 New York, NY 10001 p. 212 255 9707 f. 212 255 9708 e. info at lmakprojects.com www.lmakprojects.com -- john hudak http://www.johnhudak.net -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I found some amazing resonant spaces on these walks, and began recording them with my binaural recording rig. Over a period of three years I did several several sets of recordings in these locations, and extensive video recording as well. As I began assembling the piece I thought about the lengthy gestation of the piece and of ways I could allude to this and deconstruct the image over a period of time. Various timelapse techniques were experimented with, as well as various contexts - I have been working with video in diptych and triptych form for a few years and it was a natural progression to structure the piece in this form. The idea of three sections, with a gradual accretion of image and sound, came near the very end; and the pairing of each section with a mirroring sound performance seemed to be required. UNDERPASS was first presented at Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, NY, in October of 2005, with guest sound artists John Hudak on resonator guitar and laptop, and Brooks Williams on laptop. A workshop version of the UNDERPASS installation was presented in November of 2005 at my space 106BLDG30 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. I'm delighted that many of my favorite performers (and collaborators) will be on hand, along with a couple of artists whose work I know and respect, but whom I have never worked with before. It's going to be an exciting series. cheers bruce Diapason is located at 1026 Avenue of the Americas between 38th and 39th Streets, two blocks south of Bryant Park. Email: simon at symbiosis.com.au -- Hi folks, First show of the month and it's new releases all the way. A look at the many great sounds that have been flying across the Symbiosis desk and computer recently. Tonight new releases from the net labels Conv and Stasisfield - both from the same person funnily enough! Dan Warburton. Paris-based Dan Warburton's "Walk Through" series of compositions based on ambulatory field recordings began on Stasisfield back in 2004 with 'A Walk Through L'. The series continued with a CDR release of walks through "R" and "V" on Why Not Ltd. He has released the fourth, 'D' on Stasisfield and the fifth 'M' on Conv this week. Another net label on the roster this week, Sutemos. They have just released the 3rd volume of their Intelligent Toys series. We're going to hear a few tracks off that tonight. New releases also by Chris Clark, his new album 'Body Riddle' came out this week on Warp, through Inertia locally. I will be chatting with Chris soon and airing that in the coming weeks on Symbiosis. And as if all that is not enough, new releases from Janek Schaefer on Brisbane label Room40, Seatle label and/OAR's new one by Paulo Raposo and Marc Behrens. I kicked things off last week with the new release on Melbourne label Naturestrip. This label has done consistently great things and this one is no different. Their new release is by Eugene Carchesio and Leighton Craig. The next two weeks on Symbiosis will be taking a closer look at two shows in the Melbourne International Arts Festival (www.melbournefestival.com.au): 11th October 2006: Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto (Carsten Nicolai) are performing their new collaboration, 'Insen', at the Arts Centre from Thurs 12th - Sat 14th October. Tune in to Symbiosis this week to hear a chat with them. Ryuichi Sakamoto: http://www.sitesakamoto.com/ Alva Noto: http://www.alvanoto.com/ Insen: http://melbournefestival.com.au/events/view-production/67/2971/insen/product ion.aspx 18th October 2006: Swiss percussionist Fritz Hauser is widely known for the uncompromising virtuosity of his solo programs on drums and percussion, which he performs worldwide. Hauser has composed for percussion ensembles and soloists, sound installations, radio plays, films and readings. Solodrumming is an improvised performance drawing inspiration from Schallmachine, Hauser?s collaboration with architect Boa Baumann and Melbourne?s Aphids and Speak Percussion, which can also be experienced as part of this year?s Festival. Fritz joins me on the show to talk about Solodrumming and Schallmachine 06. But K?ner has also made his own video works - to great acclaim. This time to perform his From the Outskirts of Nothing to the Suburbs of the Void, which is part of an ongoing video cycle in which his haunting images of becalmed suburbia are accompanied with a live mix. Polyphonic white noise and children's voices intensify and deepen our experience of absence and emptiness. K?ner creates breathing images. Acoustic and visual atmospheres blend over, comment upon, and interpret the almost static images. http://www.thomaskoner.de -------------------------- TAPE & TENNISCOATS & ASS Mi. 18.10.2006, doors: 20.00h Kulturbunker M?lheim Berliner Str. 20 51063 K?ln http://www.kulturbunker-muelheim.de Tape (Stockholm/H?pna, chamber music ambient soundscapes) Tenniscoats (Tokio, experimental art pop) Ass (Andreas S?derstr?m, Stockholm) Reihe "bunkerfrequenzen" Tape On october the 24th, 2005 the swedish trio Tape will release their eagerly awaited third album - Rideau. The main idea behind this record was to make something that differed from the two previous albums that was recorded by the group themselves, and also to try to work with another person to push thesmleves in another direction. The choice fell on Marcus Schmickler, german musician and producer and the album was recorded in his studio in Cologne, winter/spring 2004-2005. Another way of working had to be found and the concentrated atmosphere that was established were soon transferred onto the recordings. The surroundings of Cologne made for sure an imprint as the previous albums were recorded in rural Sweden. The songs have a more architectural structure this time, a sharper sound, more rhythmical elements and a grandeur that hasn?t shown before. Tape?s music moves between experimental music and pop without effort. and has been recognized internationally for it?s particular sound where electronics blend with all sorts of acoustic and electric instruments. Tape was formed in 2000 by brothers Andreas and Johan Berthling together with Tomas Hallonsten. Their first recording Opera came out in 2002, the second - Milieu in 2003, both released on H?pna. Tape have done shorter tours in Europe, the US and Japan. In august 2005 Staalplaat released a live cd of Tape in their "Mort Aux Vaches" series. Marcus Schmickler is a musician, producer and composer with a broad range. Solo - he makes noisemusic , pop with Pluramon with Julee Cruise and composes cotemporary music for choir. Andreas Berthling has made records with electronic muisc under his own name on labels such as Staalplaat, F?llt, Anechoic and Mitek. Plays with the groups Frontroom Ensemble and Feed and is also active as sound engineer. Tomas Hallonsten?s sheer musicality and ability to play several instruments has led him to perform and record with a lot of different swedish artists. Outside of Tape, Johan Berthling works mostly as a double bassplayer with musicians like Sten Sandell, Raymond Strid and Mats Gustafsson. He has worked with swedish artists Nicolai Dunger, Stina Nordenstam, Goran Kajfes among others www.tape.se H?pna www.hapna.com Tenniscoats Tenniscoats consists of Saya on vocals and keyboards and Ueno on guitar and saxophone. They make their own brilliant mix of pop and experimentalism and are also members of the Maher Shala Hash Baz collective. They were featured in a episode of MTV?s This is our music. Members of Tape will join their set. www.tenniscoats.com Ass is Andreas S?derstr?m?s solo venture. He?s one of Stockholm's busiest musicians and plays with Jenny Wilson, Blood Music, Pallin and as an extra live member with Tape. ----------------- a u f a b w e g e n p.o.box 100152 50441 cologne germany http://www.aufabwegen.com ----------------- From thom at musclefish.com Mon Oct 16 16:48:56 2006 From: thom at musclefish.com (Thom Blum) Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2006 13:48:56 -0700 Subject: [Microsound-announce] Call for Works: San Francisco Tape Music Festival Message-ID: <4533F038.8070009@musclefish.com> http://www.sfsound.org/tape Call For Works The "new" San Francisco Tape Music Center is seeking fixed electroacoustic works (aka tape pieces) for possible performance. Email: simon at symbiosis.com.au -- Hi folks, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto (Carsten Nicolai) were in town last week to perform their collaboration, 'Insen'. I caught up with them at their hotel on Monday and aired our chat on this week's show. Some nice clanging tea cups and the 20th floor hotel ambience came with it :) The interview had a great response and Ryuichi and Carsten are two down-to-earth guys. It is a great pleasure to feature their work on Symbiosis. The rest of the show was an eclectic mix. Old and new were both represented. New ones from BJ Nilsen & Stilluppsteypa on The Helen Scarsdale Agency, Tim Hecker on Kranky, and Melbourne artist James Wilkinson's new one for the Preservation label under the guise 'Post'. And old ones from Jeph Jerman and Freeform amongst others. Tonight: 18th October 2006: Continuing the focus on the Melbourne International Arts Festival. Swiss percussionist Fritz Hauser is widely known for the uncompromising virtuosity of his solo programs on drums and percussion, which he performs worldwide. The bulk of the piece is comprised of contributions kindly sent to me via e-mail as well as my own audio forays into fridges. These recordings vary in proximity to the fridges (underneath, inside, behind etc...) to complementary treatments and compositions built from fridge sounds. Essentially i've composed the piece to ebb and flow through all the recordings. describing our relationship with the appliance and mapping out sonically the components and compartments of a fridge, so lets investigate the plink plonks, gurgles, rumblings and hummings of a refrigerator and chill out for an hour. Warm tones and a 'soundtrack' like feel were always evident in the TRR sound and Robert has kept this alive in his solo works as well. The whole record is done under the final supervision by Hue (Matteo Uggeri of Sparkle in Grey) that smoothed and mastered all the Punck?s accurate sound sculptures. ..punck uses laptop, field recordings, found sound and sampling to create his music. It proofs indeed to be the odd ball of this batch of his releases, even when the first track sound like an improvised affair. Zanni finely waves field recordings together with sounds recorded from objects and such like. Improvisation seems far away on this release, which is still along the lines of microsound and found it's influences in the work of Roel Meelkop or Richard Chartier. Working with their own pre-chosen texts, each participant alternated between reading aloud and listening, amending and improvising their performances in response to each other. At times a cacophony of competing voices, the performance was a spontaneous and unrehearsed encounter, exposing moments of vulnerability, intimacy, connection and rhythm. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Margasak, Chicago Reader) The Nihilist Spasm Band has had considerable press coverage over the years with feature articles appearing in The Toronto Star Magazine, The Globe and Mail, Time Magazine, Artscanada, 20 Cents Magazine, Bananafish Magazine, Muckraker Magazine, The Chicago Reader, The Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, Time Out New York, The Village Voice,The Wire, Mojo, and numerous American, British, European, and Japanese publications. They have been featured on programmes on CBC Television, CBC Radio AM & FM, Radio Canada, Radio France, on Japanese television, on local stations in London, Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City, and on university stations across Canada and the United States and around the world. They have been influential in experimental and improvised music in Canada and abroad. Jojo Hiroshige of the group Hijokaidan has said one of his goals is "to become the Nihilist Spasm Band of Japan" (jewel case notes, Good Alchemy Presents WORLD RECORDS). THE NIHILIST SPASM BAND, CURRENT PERSONNEL John B. Boyle was born in London, Ontario and currently lives in Peterborough. Boyle taught elementary school in St. Catharines, Ontario from 1962 til 1968, and has been a full time professional artist ever since. His paintings and painted constructions have been exhibited in major galleries across Canada and around the world, and they can be seen in most large collections across the country, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Confederation Arts Centre. In 1995 his first novel, No Angel Came, was published by Tellem Press. In the NSB he plays electric kazoo with digital delay and ring modulator, thumb piano and percussion. Peter Margasak of the Chicago Reader has called him "something of an Ayleresque virtuoso" of the kazoo. In 2001 and 2004 he had solo exhibitions at Fukugan Gallery, Osaka and performed with Jojo Hiroshige, Masahiko Ohno, Aya Ohnishi, and other leading Japanese noise and electronic musicians. He and Art Pratten performed with various artists in Tokyo at Uplink Factory in 2003 in conjunction with the Japanese premierre of the film "What About Me: The Rise of the Nihilist Spasm Band". John Clement was born in Toronto and currently lives in London, Ontario, where he works as a family physician. For many years he has had a passion for fast and powerful motorcycles and from time to time has been a serious motorcycle racer. In the NSB he plays electric guitars he has built or modified, and percussion. William A. Exley was born in London, Ontario and lived for many years in Elmira, Ontario, where he was a much loved secondary school English teacher and department head. He has recently retired and moved back to London. Exley is an orator and performer of note in the London area where he is famous for his speeches at the annual picnic of the Nihilist Party of Canada. In the NSB he is the vocalist and also plays theremin and various found instruments, including his wife Norma's cooking pot with marbles, pop cans and tricycle parts. "His voice," says Robin Edgerton in Time Out New York, "has one of the richest timbres ever given to a human being". Murray Favro was born in Huntsville, Ontario, and now lives in London, Ontario, where he works as one of Canada's leading sculptors. His works have been shown in major galleries across Canada, in the United States, Cuba, and in several countries in Europe, and he was the 1996 winner of the prestigious Gershon Iskowitz prize for outstanding achievement as a visual artist. Exhibitions are in preparation in both France and Spain. Favro has designed and built many guitars which are prized by collectors as both art objects and outstanding musical instruments. In the NSB he concentrates on playing guitar with occasional forrays into percussion. In 1997 he contributed solo guitar material to an Alchemy guitar compilation disc. Art Pratten was born and continues to reside in London, Ontario. For many years he worked as an artist/designer and in numerous related capacities at the London Free Press. He is now retired. In the NSB he originally played kazoos of his own design and construction, but within a short time began to invent, build and play a succession of beautifully crafted and much prized violin-like instruments played with the bow under the name Pratt-a-various. He has also built and played guitars, a "water pipe" electronic wind instrument of his own invention, and at least one dulcimer-like instrument that is played with mallets. ."the world's first noise band" THE NIHILIST SPASM BAND ******** FATHER ----------------- a u f a b w e g e n p.o.box 100152 50441 cologne germany http://www.aufabwegen.com ----------------- From andras.hargitai at gmail.com Fri Oct 27 06:05:54 2006 From: andras.hargitai at gmail.com (Andras Hargitai) Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2006 12:05:54 +0200 Subject: [Microsound-announce] looking for radios Message-ID: <7cb341d30610270305p2cd457a3p5e1665996a5b306c@mail.gmail.com> Hi all, As you may now, I have a radio show called VBR presenting various netaudio music, now it is aired here in Hungary on 4 radio stations. The collection includes "July 17, 2006", a spare study in simple harmony and silence; "April 27, 2004", an ever-shifting, rhythmic juxtaposition of acoustic percussion and digital sound; and the nearly 40-minute "May 3, 1997" for microtonal piano, percussion, and noise, one of Kirschner's signature pieces. "Three Compositions" offers an ideal cross-section of Kirschner's outstanding body of work. Composer Kenneth Kirschner was born in 1970 and lives in New York City. Compared to his previous work the sense of a certain (highly qualified) 'naivet?e' is still retained, although now more poignantly constituted by a sense of purpose, an intentional structure, a cristallized, individual PRESENCE, bearing the proportions of these silential dimensions of its origin. An awe-filled sense of simplicity, of purity remains, most importantly with regards to the music's non-artificial character of spirit. It may be a strange place to find such emotional honesty - in a small niche of very composed and contained avantgarde electronics - which one would ordinarily rather search for in some scratchy howling blues-recording; but it is exactly here that the cards are shuffled and the truth is laid out. The point is made, the picture is presented, the map is spread out to embark from there on an exotic journey back into the white heart of blissful 'Silence'. liner notes by Mark Pauwen http://www.con-v.org __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? He also presented a fantastic live act at Cod Estek in Budapest, Hungary which will be released as well in November 2006 at Complementary Distribution. Esplanade is a minimal techno collage to which anyone can easily daydream in cities or suburbs. Songs are more (but not too) minimal than the average, and introduce simpler samples in a sofisticated but twisted way, unlike standardised dubtechno netaudio releases. So Esplanade is somehow rather closer to the fantastic works of Russian minimal techno talents like Killahertz or Eric Delay. The title track can be nothing else but one of the most romantic and emotional minimal techno works in the scene with elaborate and elevated melodic structure. These 5 pieces are some earlier tracks by Mr. Vaspoeri, and he states that he prefers choosing different directions of 4/4 music nowadays, so the uniqueness of this release is also guaranteed. When we reach the suburbs of our virtual city, two other talents join us: One is Cooler (U-Cover/Chi/Bitlab) who tells his own lovely, but more heavy interpretation of the song Komfort with some analogue sounds of his Nord Modular Synth. Finally, we can stand up and shake to the electrobreaks of Noise64's Esplanade remix who introduced himself in the summer of 2006 with his album titled 120. The release is also accompanied with an animgif image of the rising Sun in the city of Budapest with some planes moving in the sky. The cover, its photos, and the animgif is completely made by Plesiv aka Karex who is a well known electro dj and visual artist in the underground music scene of Hungary. The audio mastering is done by Cooler. Enjoy & spread it. Location: http://november.gloriousninth.net NOVEMBER is a performance that utilises peer-to-peer instant messaging technology, and the participants were able to see and hear each other on their computers throughout.
