I have nothing to do with this auction, but I thought maybe some of the microsound community may be interested. Here is an auction where you can purchase a bit of history. It is equipment from Conny Plank's studio. If you are not aware of who he was: "...During the 1970s Conny Plank produced and/or engineered many of the most important recordings by significant German progressive/ experimental music acts (given the derogratory label krautrock by the UK music press at the time), including Kraftwerk (Kraftwerk, Kraftwerk 2, Ralf und Florian, Autobahn, and the precursor album Tone Float), Neu! (all their recordings), Cluster, Harmonia, Ash Ra Tempel, Holger Czukay (Can), and Guru Guru. His long association with Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius of Cluster began in 1970 and endured until his death..." more bio info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conny_Plank My understanding is that the money is to go to medical expenses incurred by his widow. I do not know what medical problem it is, but, again, if you are interested in grabbing a significant piece of history as well as helping a good cause, then you should check out the pages of equipment here (before Julian Cope buys it all! - hahahaha!): http://www.connys-studio.de/ best to all, Rod --- Now playing: David Bowie - Yassassin (Turkish for: Long Live) From roberth at lanset.com Tue May 2 02:02:03 2006 From: roberth at lanset.com (roberth) Date: Mon, 1 May 2006 23:02:03 -0700 Subject: [Microsound-announce] foxglove release Message-ID: <018701c66dae$139e0ce0$b7435142@Office> hey all, hope everyone's having a good easter weekend. and i hope everyone has more days off from work than i do (zero). anyway, rather than celebrating easter with eggs, i offer up these goodies: foxglove116: robert horton/keijo "50" split 2x cd-r to celebrate robert horton's 50th birthday (4/15/06), he has joined forces with finland's mighty keijo virtanen. each artist offers up an entire album (over 100 minutes of music in total). these two are kindred spirits without even knowing it. these two discs find each participant circling amongst the harmony of the spheres. horton's disjointed, shambolic compositions rain like acid from the blackened skies. heavy doses of acoustic wreckage litter the cosmos like the heavens have been oblitterated and turned into sawdust and smoke. horton is a flightless bird soaring through the air. keeping all of this grounded is jyv?skyl? resident keijo. these five tracks were recorded at his 50th birthday celebration with a host of collaborators and friends. scattered woodwinds and percussion sound like they're floating in a water chamber. various asian stringed instruments line the aural streets the ensemble creates, giving this a completely unique sound. while there are numerous free jazz inclinations here with hints at a more subdued rauhan orkesteri, keijo's hand keeps these songs from reaching full-fledged chaos. everything here is under control. this two disc set is packaged in silkscreened covers by nathan young. 100 copies foxglove117: seht "christian jesus, i will determine a suicide" cd-r sailing on seas of light, seht's (aka stephen clover) latest journey begins as a damaged boat heading toward the edges of oblivion. even as it sinks into its icy grave, the victorian-inspired sounds of whimsy and celebration echo through the caustic waves. this music is ghostly and soothing. but everything takes a turn for the worse as clover heads into the home stretch. metallic sludge rises and falls, churning up everything in its path like a tornado destined to find the gates of hell. these dark and murky drones leave everything to the imagination, but you have to jump in headfirst, as seht is not here to hold your hand. as usual, stephen clover produces another mesmerzing, ambient masterpiece. 100 copies comp006: "wailing bones volume 5" cd-r this is the fourth installment of an ongoing series of cd-r releases, split between four artists, each contributing longform tracks. volume 5 features exclusive smack from the clear spots, heavy winged, wolfskull, and the lost domain. 150 copies http://www.digitalisindustries.com/catalog4.html & http://www.digitalisindustries.com/catalogcomp.html yummy yummy... up next will be the tom carter CD reissue and a brand new CD (first non-CDR release) from keijo & the free players. after that, all sorts of goodies... much love, -brad sorry for x-posting -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... ? suivre! - tobias, Anik & Sophie Mai 2006 -English- : UPGRADE! : MAY This May we are pleased to produce two Upgrades : the first on May 17th is with the Netherlands/US duo of Sara Kolster & Derek Holster. For several years the pair have been collaborating on ? live cinema ? projects that explore the microsonic and microscopic fabric of existence through improvisation in delicate electronic music and video. By embracing Open Source software such as PD (Pure Data) and Linux, Kolster and Holster have merged a political trajectory with the stuff of their practice. Gathered from various locations around the world, sound and image blend into hypnotic and telling explorations of the poetic everyday, mutating into live performances, installations and net-art projects. Their recent residency at the Video-In (Vancouver) describes their work as rejecting ?the use of common, commercial production methods and the default, commercial artworks that these methods often produce, preferring instead to program their own software, build their own hardware interfaces and actively participate in the free and open source communities which surround these activities.? ? Many sounds and images in our everyday lives slip past our notice simply because they are too small, or because we lack the proper receivers to pick them up. For the past 5 years, Derek Holzer and Sara Kolster have initiated various online, audiovisual and performance projects which investigate these hidden "resonances" of locations. Their work has taken them from abandoned KGB spy stations and submarine bases in the Baltics to the streets of Sao Paulo and the living spaces of Delhi in a search for acoustic and visual traces of the histories of these places. With their web-based projects Soundscape-FM, Berlin.Soundscape-FM and Soundtransit.nl, they build collaborative systems for the creation of local, global and imaginative soundscapes. Finally, with their live "resonanCITY" performance, taking place at the ELEKTRA Festival this year, they synthesize field recordings, found objects, photography and video collected in various locations around the world into a live cinema performance somewhere between a dream and a roadtrip. ? The sum of his simple, warm, aero-mood guitar floatings and drones is truly regarded as a novelty and this novelty is probably something we can call art. The titles and the tracklist represent infinity as well which is present in all of our movements. The sounds and feelings gently reverberated through them, are more complex here, though the main concept which is realised in the tonal atmospheres stays the same from “Just Think Again” to “Just Think again”. This last track is a well done rework by dia aka Diana Bobics the fine artist and sound designer who debuted on Complementary Distribution before Aqua. Take a walk in the afternoon with this release, and you will indeed just think again. http://www.bitlabrecords.com/cod/cod009.html hope your ears will enjoy this. :) Andras _________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ 3.000,- Ft aj?nd?k fot?kidolgoz?s, minden digit?lis f?nyk?pez?g?p v?s?rl?shoz. I came up with that phrase when I needed one for lezrod's myspace site and later found that somebody else conceived it for an article on William Basinski and Richard Chartier's self-titled on the german magazine DE:Bug. This phrase describes very accurately the new release from Sticking Drops, a two people project from Italy. "Meteo" is one of the most interesting releases I have heard through 2006, and indeed happens somewhere else. Lorenzo Tomio and Nicola Luchese managed to ellaborate an album where darkness and detail result in an awesome sonic experience where time runs in a creepy mode and space is merely a bizarre consequence of that. This mixture of organic timbres and fragmented/chopped guitars creates a constant tension that results in a very hypnotic and fascinating experience; "Meteo" manages to keep the focus very intensely as the structures work in a very narrative way, very storytelling and yet very abstract. Test Tube always releases pretty amazing material, but I have to say this record was very special for me and I am very honoured and glad to get to review it. Indeed an album that stands out.?/ - David Velez /http://www.monocromatica.com/netlabel/releases/tube041.htm http://www.experiment.it/stickingdrops -- *'| test tube* - a netlabel testtube at monocromatica.com www.monocromatica.com/netlabel From heribert.friedl at aon.at Sat May 6 08:06:08 2006 From: heribert.friedl at aon.at (Heribert Friedl) Date: Sat, 6 May 2006 14:06:08 +0200 Subject: [Microsound-announce] nvo_007 - new release out now! Message-ID: <007201c67105$757d5100$8c00000a@blue> dear microsound-community! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRESS RELEASE NVO 007 Tomas Phillips/Dean King ? TRAVERS LE BORD The product of a definite convergence of ideas as well as my own nascent french, the title ? Travers le Bord can be interpreted as both a 'crossing through' a material edge or border and a liminal move from exterior to interior, or vice versa, in terms of, for example, flesh, or more generally, selfhood. A happy accident. Though I would never presume to attribute any central meaning to music, such border crossings are a constant in my life and most likely inform my composition process as it unfolds in front of the laptop, moving or being still, listening, inside or out. It's a delightful paradox, the ongoing flux that finds its faithful correlate in the pull towards a relative silence and calm. Also delightful was my good friend and collaborator Dean King's willingness to contribute sound material for this piece, in addition to a much needed critical ear. After a few limited edition cd-r releases as Eto Ami, we were due a joint project. Many of these sounds I processed further and set about composing - a long and sometimes arduous course that prompted its own numerous excursions through borders. Most importantly, however, I was reminded of the pleasures of camaraderie, even at a distance. The duo of Dean King and Tomas Phillips came together as Eto Ami in 2000 with the mere intention of exploring a shared aesthetic. This partnership soon developed a trajectory of its own, however, compelling us to push the compositional process towards further levels of refinement and performative dexterity. What this continues to mean for us is the achievement of a balance between digital and non-digital sound and a functional recognition of their differences in terms of utility and signification. Whilst computer technology remains central to our work, we make an effort to locate composition within a space of physicality, a space in which the composing subject(s) is allowed to "become," in the language of Deleuze, alongside the relative self-sufficiency of software. Hence our use of acoustic instrumentation and field recordings gathered on the periphery of laptops. By extension, we seek to foreground the act of listening (as composers and audience alike) in the slowly evolvingtradition of microsound, without precluding the possibility of active and engaged harmony. Tomas Phillips Following his critically acclaimed release on Trente Oiseaux (ON DIT, 2003) and other collaboration works with Tobias C. van Veen (and/OAR, 2005) and I8U (Petite Sono, 2006) we are proud to release this beautiful, fresh piece by Tomas Phillips and Dean King. The cd will be released as a limited edition of 300 numbered copies. With only the poet's initiatory words for sustenance one steps into the looking glass - the empty frame - to fall smack in the realm of the blind, unyielding and uni-directional 'drone' of life (whether lived or googled is of no essential consequence within this realm of existence). This movement though is but the substratum of a gentler phenomenology introduced by Mathieu's vibrant search for the minute detail, for the ghost in the machine, adding a new sense of perspective: a sense of the gradual calibration of the moved to the mover. The alien mechanics perpetuating the weaving-loom finally become instances of encounter with oneself - not as in a looking glass, but in an experience of unreflected recognition. I find headphones a very poetic object. I receive indications through the headphones and try to react to them. Often I misunderstand them. Often I can't really control what I sing because the headphones separate me from the environment. I make music on conversations, conversations i had, and I make music together with them. People I meet. Often they were carrying headphones. And I was letting them listen to something. Then it happens you are not listening with them because the headphones cut you out. But you can listening their reactions. They often misunderstand too. On one side what I do could remind of songs. Kind of almost spoken, abstract songs. Maybe is just the duration that make them song-like, maybe they are just 'pieces'. Maybe they are not songs at all." Alessandro Bosetti was born in Milan, Italy in 1973. Composer, saxophonist and sound artist. He works on the musicality of spoken words and unusual aspects of spoken communication and produced text-sound compositions featured in live performances, radio broadcastings and recordings for labels of experimental music in. In his work he moves on the line between sound anthropology and composition. Field research and interviews often build the basis for his abstract compositions. As a saxophonist he has developed an original instrumental language that incorporates extended techniques, noises, and a strong influence from electronic music. It is a project where netartists are asked to make mixes of music that is released in creative commons. Some write ups made by op3n.net about it. ----- While finishing his final dissertation, Sietse van Erve stole some time to complete a mixtape created to be recorded onto a 90 minute cassette tape, 45 mins each side. an exquisite selection of new sounds from these digital days for a soon extinguished analog format. sweet ambient contradiction. ------ Sietse van Erve (aka Orphax), usually walks around with dozens of drones in his pocket. I have about 5 proper artworks in the exhibit, including a large-scale projection; a neon work mounted on aluminum created in 1998; and also a display case full of related 'collective' ephemera as a tracing of our history. The other collective members have been busy as well, each displaying a few works for this exhibition (some of which are described on the gallery info sheet, link attached a little further on in the email). This is a really big show, both spacially and from a technological perspective, utilizing about 10 ipod players (each member of the collective, for example, has created a listening station of about 2 hours worth of their compositions, sonic works, and live performance excerpts), 2 video projectors, several monitors, these weird CD players that a company called 'Muji'creates, a bunch of wafer-thin backlit photographs (powered by really cool flat LCD screens, a lovely find); etc. .........Official gallery exhibition information sheet downloadable here: http://www.artgalleryofwindsor.com/documents/page5.pdf .........We haven't taken installation shots yet, but here's a peek at my work 'Overnight' (2003), installed in the stairwell at the Art Gallery of Windsor, with a lovely view of the Detroit skyline in the background: http://www.thinkbox.ca/agw-overnight.html .........and here's a link to some "behind-the-scenes shots" of the massive 2nd floor space (just after conceptual art forefather Iain Baxter's amazing retrospective show was stripped away) and while the space was being prepped to receive our works (we've requested some painting, wall manipulations, etc)... http://www.thinkbox.ca/agw-install.html - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Thinkbox is a project-based collective exploring material and technique to produce works that develop complex questions to simplified answers about art, technology, and the nature of multimedia creation. Thinkbox intersects with mass culture through a variety of initiatives ranging from gallery installations, performances, and the release of audio/video products. 'Archive' brings together the latest sound and visual works by the six-member core of Thinkbox, which consists of Christopher Bissonnette, Mark Laliberte, Chris McNamara, Steve Roy, Rob Theakston and Bill Van Loo. Thinkbox: 'Archive' will feature ongoing documentation in the form of a new CD release and a full-colour, scholarly catalogue produced in collaboration with the Thames Art Gallery in Chatham, ON. But one thing they shouldn't be the only ones to get is a free Matmos concert (is that a grammatical sentence?). Anyway, we're pairing up our free concert at the Whitney Museum of American Art, which is the official release party for our new album, with another free concert on the campus of the San Francisco Art Institute. It's going to be an alfresco, outdoors affair; meet us at the staircase outside studio 9. We won't be hard to find. We will play in a new lineup augmented by the students of M. C. Schmidt's "Sound As Music" class. This will be the largest Matmos ensemble ever, so be prepared for an improvisatory hootenanny. Also on hand to lend festive ear-piercing electronics to the occasion is the able-bodied citizen of Washington, D.C, Richard Chartier. Please note that this performance launches at the early hour of 5 pm, so consider it a pre-dinner affair. Diesem Verschwinden in der elektronischen Musik will Strotter Inst. entgegenwirken. Wir sind gespannt. greg davis & sebast?n roux - paquet suprise Their love of sound brought them together. The Atlantic Ocean kept them apart. Until now... After over a year of internet exchanges of ideas and sounds, Parisian Sebastien Roux and Vermonter Greg Davis decided to put their love to the test. Combining their interests in psychedelic music, digital processing, folk, sunshine pop, musique concrete, ethnic sounds, drones and field recordings, Sebastien (who works at the famed computer music institution IRCAM) and Greg (who holds two degrees in music and composition) have created a dynamic musical journey full of joy and surprises. Whether it's large rocks being thrown into a stream, Sebastien singing or Greg playing the double mijwiz, diverse sound worlds come together in this "surprise package". Open it and enjoy! - Greg Davis and Sebastien Roux will play shows on the east and west coast early next year. - Greg Davis will on an east coast and Midwest electro-acoustic supertour in mid-September w/ Thomas Korber & David Daniell - Greg has already racked up serious tour credentials, having crossed the globe with artists such as Keith Fullerton Whitman, The Animal Collective, and Pan-American. - Greg Davis has his own label Autumn Records. The songs have a collage-like character, aiming at constructing fields rather than common song structures. Acoustic instruments (guitars, piano, voices, sounds) are used as well as synthetic elements which leads to a mixture of live recorded and compositional created passages. A central idea is to integrate fieldrecordings - longer recordings as ambient backings or concrete sounds like those when cooking in a kitchen. Sinebag is Alexander Schubert and lives in Leipzig, Germany. The inspiration by everyday sounds and fieldrecorded ambiences isn't limited to the use of these as instruments but influences the compositons as such. Sequences and rhythmic structures therefore build patterns inspired by the sound surrounding us all the time. This idea of creating fields is not bound to instruments or genres. They can be achieved by noise, experimental electronics, or as on the current release by monotonous guitarpatterns. Though the main focus lies on rather silent, discrete compositions sinebag additionally covers the field of avantgarde-sample-mountains too. The variety of approaches is illustrated by the collaborations with different musical projects ranging from folk over digital noise to free jazz. The current album "pr?s de la lisi?re" (ahornfelder 2005) features mostly fieldrecordings and quiet guitar compositions. they are accomenied by electric elements, mostly discribable as clicksn cuts, and by acoustic elemnts like organs, xylophones. The previous record "milchwolken in teein" has been released on ahornfelder und pulsmusik. The main theme on theis lp is the use of free rhythm. the spectrum of sounds is a bit broader and more genres are integrated. In a live situation Alexander Schubert persues the goal of playing as many components live as possible - in contrast to relying on backing-tracks. This is achieved in thoughtfully structured live sets and and the use of selfbuilt instruments. Each concert has a unique compositional setup and set of instruments and is most of the times supported by other guest musicians (electronics, piano, guitars, bass). In concerts the idea of combining noisy with harmonic elements is a central part as well as the contrasts between minimalstic and complex passages. All in all, a concert establishes a most interesting soundscape ranging from fieldrecordings, electronic noises, to guitar compositions and differs in a positve way from the typical laptop artist, as the sound synthesis is visible and understandable to the viewer. some releases: -pr?s de la lisi?re (ahornfelder) 2005 -milchwolken in teein (pulsmusik) 2003 -canine fragrance (luumu recordings) 2002 www.sinebag.de www.ahornfelder.de semuin music: SEMUIN is an attempt to combine (de-) construction with diminished expression in a friendly and subtle manner. This is achieved by mixing computer-generated sounds, noise and fieldrecordings with acoustic instruments. The use of strong beats has been deliberately avoided as they would dominate the tracks too much. person: SEMUIN is Jochen Briesen, who was born in Sept.1976 in Heidelberg, Germany, and lives in Berlin since 1998, where he studied musicology and philosophy. He is writing his dissertation in philosophy/epistemology and is working as a musician on several projects with very different approaches. (TAUNUS www.8ung.at/taunus; GASTON www.gaston-musik.de) He also works for film- and theatre productions. set- up: The live-set-up consists of: Powerbook, 4- track-rec., steelstringguitar, kalimba, harmonium and some effects. www.semuin.de Discographie: Semuin longplayer: Split 12" Semuin / Anne Laplantine 2005 on HappyZloty (GER). THANK YOU! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- framework - phonography/field recording; contextual and decontextualized sound activity presented by patrick mcginley this week we featured two projects from the bookscapes project curated by platform projects, both featuring uk artist alec finlay. the first, in collaboration with andrew hodson, is a series of writing and recordings made of and about various styles of dance - we listened to a broad collection of untreated recordings of various solo and group dance pieces, short recordings interspersed between and over the other pieces we listened to. we also heard finlay's collaboration with framework regular chris watson, a recording of a vocal performance at a harbour on the north sea, a beautiful capture of the harbour soundscape wafting with often faint and distant vocal snatches. this piece, siren, is due to be released in its final form this. if you're interested in the bookscapes project, it has come to our attention that there will be a performance and launch party for the series in newcastle on thursday the 25th of may, 7:30pm at the cumberland arms, featuring performances by alec finlay, maria jardardottir and clive powell. for more information write them at info at platformprojects.org. we also heard new recordings this week from tim coster, whose curated projects of untreated field recordings on his claudia label we have featured in past editions, new u.s. based composer juan matos capote, an mp3 release from emmanuel mieville, and three out of the four artists featured on the most recent cronica electronica product series cd (we will hear the fourth in an upcoming edition). our next edition will continue our new framework:afield series, this one curated in the uk by sonic artist felicity ford, weaving a beautiful tapestry of often melancholic, sometimes nostalgic field recordings, musical captures and music boxes. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition or introduction submissions. send material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. we are also hoping to have live performances as often as possible, so if you are in or passing through london please get in touch! As a result, I'm going to put out a compilation album to hopefully get the ball rolling. After building a community for visual and audio artists, hopefully KSOD will become a place where people can meet, share ideas, and find other people to collaborate with. I plan on doing physical releases at some point, but as of now I neither have the revenue, nor the publicity necessary to do that. I'm sending out a call for works for the first ksod (kitty scratch of death) compilation album. Deadline is July 1rst (although the earlier the submission, the better). Works must be noise-related, and sent to me in 192 kbps mp3 format. 8:00 maximum, and 1:50 minimum. Using a random number generator/matching program, I'll randomly pair video artists with each track, so hopefully there will be a dvd to go along with the release (thus the 1:50 min. There needs to be enough audio that the video artist can actually do something with it). I encourage anyone interested get in on this, and get a track to me asap so if I feel it needs a little tweaking to fit the idea I have for the label, you can have time to work on it (although I have a feeling everything will be awesome). Also, if any of you work with video, e-mail me a sample of your work. I still have a few slots open for visualists. At the very least, I'd keep you apprised of future projects and opportunities. e-mail me with questions or submissions: bryanteoh AT gmail.com http://www.ksod.net Thanks Bryan Teoh -- http://www.techniquolor.com http://www.ksod.net http://www.8bitbetty.com From soutiengorge at freemail.hu Thu May 18 15:03:05 2006 From: soutiengorge at freemail.hu (banyek) Date: Thu, 18 May 2006 21:03:05 +0200 (CEST) Subject: [Microsound-announce] Gfx Competition Message-ID: hi all, We are in the process of creating & editing an electronic/electroacoustic music related collection of writings in Hungary, due to be out in autumn 2006. It will be available as a CC licensed pdf (and other derivative formats) + we will create a very limited amount of hard copies which will be given to libraries. Various proffesors from Hungarian Faculties of Arts and other young talents are going to publish their works in this collection which still does not have a name. There will be reviews, interviews, essays, and artist/label portraits in it. We are going to organise tiny music+discussion events too, and promote the collection online and offline as well. I am going to translate the whole or some parts of it into English, but for this I don’t have an exact date. Although writings will be written by Hungarians, we would like to involve graphic artworks in the collection as well from all around the world which would be “exhibited” between the writings. Terms of conditions: - Please send your artist name and your title of the ONE work you can submit. (if it doesn’t have one, we’ll publish it as Untitled) - Bear in mind that we don’t have any problems with detailed and fully coloured submissions, though we will not be able to print it in full colour, only in 256 greyscale. We would suggest you then to make a compromise somehow due to this fact. - However big work you send in size, notice that the maximum space for it will be only an A4 sheet of paper - All parts of the publication will be free, so nobody will get money for his or her job. - There is a strict deadline, it is the 15th of August 2006, 23:59 So, feel free to send anything in email to me which you would relate to electronic or electroacoustic music! Please avoid attached files if possible! Anyone expecting a rackety wall of distorted feedback guitars and voices will be gently surprised though by the sparse and intimate sketches to be found on this wonderful record. Songs are stripped down to their raw bones using only the most essential elements to reveal the soul behind every single sound. Superfluous effects seem to be completely absent, creating an open space for miniscule details, always ready to implode into noisier tracks such as "Private Matter". The album culminates in "Hammock Moods", a quietly mesmerizing epic finale with Maja Ratkje humming a beautiful melody over Hegre's gorgeous near-psychedelic guitar playing. Let's all hope for a sequel to this album! Maja Ratkje is a member of Spunk (Rune Grammofon) and noise duo Fe-Mail. Her solo album "Voice" (produced in collaboration with Jazzkammer) got an Award of Distinction at Prix Ars Electronica in 2003. In 2001 she was the first composer ever to receive the Arne Nordheim distinction award. She has collaborated with Jaap Blonk, Ikue Mori, Otomo Yoshihide, Wolf Eyes, Matmos, Lasse Marhaug, Jason Forrest, Kim Hiortoy, Ulver and many others. John Hegre is a member of Jazzkammer / Jazkamer (Smalltown Supersound), Kaptein Kaliber, Golden Serenades, New Boiling Near The Fjords (with members of Alog) and others. His first solo 3"CD came out on Dekorder in 2003. Jazkamer will release their aptly titled new album "Metal Music Machine" in spring 2006 and Hegre is working on an as yet untitled solo album for Dekorder. Frans de Waard in Vital Weekly 519: "Yeah, right, a album of ballads by these two renowned noise artists? Hegre, member of Jazzkammer and The Golden Serenades among others and Ratkje of Fe-Mail as-well as a bunch of improvised music projects, doing an album of ballads? Yes, it's true and it's great. They carefully play acoustic objects and hardly use any electronics. Sometimes the elements are looped, forming a block of repetitive sound, sometimes there is a far away sound of sound processing. But that is far away, almost hidden in the mix. Soft electro-acoustic music, crafted into songs, rather than lengthy improvisations. It's already beautiful material, but the best is saved to the end: 'Hammock Moods' has a looped guitar, loose sounds but every once in a while there is a soft melody in the background, which even might be called romantic. An almost epic piece, which alone would be the reason to get this album. This is noise with the big N, and this is the future of noise music. Excellent!" Brian Marley in The Wire 267: "John Hegre is one half of the Norwegian noise duo Jazzkammer and Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje is a free Improv vocalist in the Maggie Nicols tradition, as well as a member of both SPUNK and Fe-mail. That said, much of Ballads defies expectations. More often than not it's a quiet and rather delicate affair, involving acoustic instruments, soft loops of noise, tick tock rhythms and pattering percussion. Voice is rarely heard. Most of the tracks are brief and enigmatic, involving repetitive patterns and copious periods of silence. "Binoculars And Traces" glides on softly undulating waves of feedback and slips into mostly low key activity during its second half, and "Private Matter" is a noise cut-up involving fragments of speaking voice in its earliest stages. Who does what is left entirely to the listener's imagination. Though the CD's eight tracks were probably all improvised, I suspect there has been some judicious post-production shaping of the material. Irony plays a part too. "A Quiet Day At The Office" is busy but without producing anything concrete, and "Art Compass" gives no clear sense of direction. The lengthy concluding track, "Hammock Moods", in which Ratkje occasionally hums as if to herself, is intriguingly eventless, drifting along on repetitively fractured guitar phrases, chords and occasional pedal swells, casually moving from one intangible moment to the next." --- --- on tour: Thursday, 25th of May at 21:00 Lasse MARHAUG & John HEGRE (ex-JAZZKAMMER): solo sets + film screening: "skills", a documentary film directed by Jan VAN HASSELT (BRD, 2005, 35 min) featuring Zgbiniew KARKOWSKI, Rudolf EB.BER and Lucas ABELA www.jazzkammer.com www.lassemarhaug.no www.random-noise.de/skills Die Alte Buchbinderei, in Berlin-Wedding, Adolfstrasse, Ecke Schererstrasse S+U Wedding, U Nauener Platz, U Leopoldplatz 26-28.05.06 Jazkamer/John Hegre/Lasse Marhaug + others . From the expanse of its starkly minimal opening track through a series of pieces that gradually build in their structural complexity and sonic palette, the music throughout Cataraqui moves along at a steady pace, engaging the listener with its diversity and exquisite craftsmanship until culminating in a final track featuring source material recorded in Mies van der Rohe's Toronto-Dominion Centre and plaintive vocals (by London band The Remote Viewers' Louise Petts) which will no doubt shock longtime Stasisfield listeners with their easily accessible beauty. JON ROSE Biography Born 1951 Jon Rose started playing the violin at 7 years old, after winning a music scholarship to King's School Rochester. He gave up formal music education at the age of 15 and from then on, was mostly self-taught. Throughout the 1970's, first in England then in Australia, he played, composed and studied in a large variety of music genres - from sitar playing to country & western; from 'new music' composition to commercial studio session work; from Bebop to Italian club bands; from Big Band serial composition to Sound Installations. He became the central figure in the development of Free Improvisation in Australia, performing in almost every Art Gallery, Jazz and Rock club in the country - either solo or with an international pool of improvising musicians called The Relative Band. In 1986, he moved to Berlin in order to more fully realise his on-going project (of some 25 years): The Relative Violin). This is the development of a Total Artform based around the one instrument. Necessary to this concept has been innovation in the fields of new instrument design (over 20 deconstructed violin instruments including the legendary double piston triple neck wheeling violin, environmental performance (eg. playing fences in the Australian outback using the violin as a bow), new instrumental techniques (tested sometimes in uninterrupted marathon concerts of up to 12 hours long), both analogue (built into the violins themselves) and the more recently inter-active electronics (3 bowing to Midi systems)... plus using the mediums of radio (over 20 major International productions for radio stations like ABC, BBC, WDR, SR, BR, Radio France, RAI, ORF, SFB, etc including 'Eine Violine f?r Valentin', 'The Long Sufferings of Anna Magdalena Bach' and 'Breadfruit'), live-performance-film, video and television to create a new, alternative, personal and revised history for THE VIOLIN. Jon Rose performs his group projects and solo music in upwards of 50 concerts every year - in North America, Japan, Australia, South America, China, Scandinavia and just about every country in West & East Europe. He is featured regularly in the main festivals of New Music, Jazz and Sound Art e.g. Strasbourg New Music Festival; New Music America; Moers New Jazz Festival; European Media Festival; The Vienna Festival; Ars Elektronica; The Northsea Jazz Festival; Dokumenta; Roma-Europa Festival; Festival D'Automne; Festival Musique Actuelle; The Berlin Jazz Festival, etc. Recently he has also been invited to curate Contemporary Music Festivals in Germany (e.g. Berlin Urbane Aboriginale) and Austria (e.g. Wels 'Unlimited'). Jon Rose curates his own on-going festival "String 'em up" of radical string players and their instruments, taking place in Podewil, Berlin in 1998 and Dodorama and V2, Rotterdam in 1999, Tonic, New York in 2000 and Mains D'Oeuvres, Paris in 2002. Jon Rose has appeared on over 60 records and CD's; He has worked with many of the innovators and mavericks in contemporary music such as Derek Bailey, Butch Morris, Barry Guy, Fred Frith, Shelley Hirsh, Joelle Leandre, Connie Bauer, Johannes Bauer, Chris Cutler, Otomo Yoshihide, KK Null, Toshinori Kondo, Francis-Marie Uitti, Alvin Curran, Evan Parker, Paul Lovens, Phil Minton, Mark Dresser, John Cage, Joel Ryan, Peter Kowald, Mari Kimura, The Soldier String Quartet, Borah Bergman, Tristan Honsinger,Tony Oxley, Cor Fuhler, Steve Beresford, Eugene Chadbourne, Bob Ostertag, Malcolm Goldstein, Jim Denley, David Moss, Miya Masaoka, Barre Phillips, Roger Turner, George Lewis, Gunter Christmann, Davy Williams, Misha Mengelberg, Elliott Sharpe, Lauren Newton, Uli Gumpert, Christian Marclay, Richard Barret, John Zorn, etc). In 1989, in co-operation with New Music Festival 'Inventionen' (Berlin), he directed the first 'Relative Violin Festival' with over 50 violinists from around the world. In 1991, he directed "Das Rosenberg Museum", a surrealist satire commissioned by German Television's ZDF, this piece later became the first interactive video ever to be controlled by a violin bow. Other films/videos include 'Caf? Central' and 'Shopping' (both made for ORF, Austria). Jon Rose is also the originator of 2 books - The Pink Violin and Violin Music in the Age of Shopping (both published by NMA, Melbourne). Jon Rose is currently performing The Hyperstring Project, one of a number of highly acclaimed works for violin and inter-active software. In addition there are performances of Violin Factory featuring large string orchestras and interactive video in Europe and Australia. His group projects include Strung, Violin Music in the Age of Shopping (with the likes of Chris Cutler, Lauren Newton, Otomo Yoshihide, etc); the infamous Berlin Noise-Impro-Rock Band Slawterhaus (with Johannes Bauer, Dietmar Diesner & Peter Hollinger); The interactive 'Badminton' game Perks, based on the musical innovations and perversions of Australian freak composer Percy Grainger; and there are four established improvising trios which are currently performing... The Exiles (with Tony Buck & Joe Williamson), and The Kryonics (with Aleks Kolkowski & Matthias Bauer), Artery (with Chris Abrahams and Clayton Thomas), and Futch (with Thomas Lehn and Johannes Bauer). A new duo Temperament was formed in 2000 with pianist Veryan Weston, specialising in improvisation with different tunings (Just, 19 tone, etc) for the keyboards and various scordatura for the violins. Other on going projects are Australia Ad Lib which documents alternative music practice in Australia and the duo Great Fences of Australia, a collaboration with US violinist Hollis Taylor. Jon Rose is again living in Australia and working on Pannikin - a commission from The Melbourne Festival, due to be performed in October 2005. Thomas Lehn analogue synthesizer, piano Since the early 1980s Thomas Lehn has been working as a performer, interpreter, composer and improviser of contemporary music. His individual style of musical expression is rooted in the experience of a broad spectrum of musical fields. After studying recording engineering at the Hochschule fuer Musik in Detmold (Germany), he moved to Cologne and studied both classical and jazz piano at the Hochschule fuer Musik Koeln. As an interpreting pianist he has played concerts since 1982 - performing both contemporary new music including numerous first performances and traditional composed music of the classical and romantically period. In 1989 he initiated the chamber ensemble Trio Dario and four years later the Mengano Quartett, focussing on performing compositions of the contemporary avant-garde. Parallel to his work as a pianist, he concentrates on composing and performing electronic music. Based on his background as an interpreting and improvising pianist in classical-, contemporary and jazz-music, he developed his individually language in live-electronic music. The electronic equipment he uses consists of analogue synthesizers of the late 1960s. The facilities of these instruments - e. g. to modify electronic sounds very directly as well as to combine and to control several parameters at the same time - allows him to spontaneously act and react in close contact with the process of tension, space and structure of the music during its performance. In 2000 his first solo CD 'Feldstaerken' has been released on German label random acoustics. His present ensemble activities include duetts with Gerry Hemingway and Marcus Schmickler, whos CDs 'Tom & Gerry' and 'Bard' has been released on Erstwhile Records, Guenter Christmann, who published the CD 'temps duree' on his own label edition explico, and Eugene Chadbourne, with whom he published 'c inside' on grob. Other duos with Paul Lovens and Raymond Strid are preparing their first record releases. Moreover he collaborates in trios with Tim Hodgkinson and Roger Turner (KONK PACK; CD 'Big Deep' out on grob), Phil Minton and Axel Doerner (TOOT), Radu Malfatti and Phil Durrant ('beinhaltung' and 'dach' released on Fringes and Erstwhile), Peter van Bergen and Gert-Jan Prins (E-RAX, 'live at the bimhuis' out on X-OR), Andreas Wagner and Guido Hafner (Die Klangraeumer, 'Mangelware' out on hybrid), John Bucher and Andy "Ex" Moor, Hannes Loeschel and Josef Novotny (ANTASTEN) and with Wolfgang Fuchs and Fabrizio Spera (LINGUA; 'Lingua' out on oaksmus). Larger ensembles are VARIO 34 a sextet with Guenter Christmann, Alexander Frangenheim, Mats Gustafsson, Paul Lovens and Christian Munthe ('vario-34' and 'water writes only in plural' released by edition explico and concepts of doing); GLASSBAND, a quintet with Phil Wachsmann, Evan Parker, Alexander Frangenheim and Roger Turner; and last, but not least MIMEO, the Music in Movement Electronic Orchestra, which includes 12 representatives of contemporary electronic music from 7 European nations. Thomas Lehn has been touring in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Hungaria, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Serbia, Slovacia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, USA and Canada. He performed at international festivals like Free Music/Antwerp (2002), Kongsberg Jazzfestival/Oslo (2002), Time Flies/Vancouver (2002), Doek Festival/Amsterdam (2001), rumor/Rotterdam/Utrecht (2001, 2000), Hessisches Jazzpodium (2001), machinations/imaginations/Bremen (2001), next music festival/Bratislava (2001), Alternativa Festival/Prague (2001), November Music/s?-Hertogenbosch/Gent/Essen (2002, 2001), Earshot Jazzfestival/Seattle (2001), Edge Festival/Ann Arbor (2001), sound on screen/Cologne (2001), Copenhagen Jazzfestival (2002, 2001), Synthese Festival/Bourges (2001), 'O da Guarda' New Music Festival/Guarda (2001), Angelica Festival (2001), Nordischer Klang/Greifswald (2001), Archipel/Geneve (2001), Banlieues Bleues (2001), pol/Frankfurt (2001), nozart/Cologne (2001, 1999), Images Sonores/Liege (2001), Metronom/Barcelona (2001), Total Music Meeting/Berlin (2000), real time music meeting/Hamburg (2000, 1996), Fruits de Mhere/Mhere (2000), Musique Action/Vandoeuvre (2000, 1999), FIMAV/Victoriaville (2000), Musik Triennale/Cologne (2000), impakt/Utrecht (2000), Kaleidophon/Ulrichsberg (2000, 1999), phonoTAKTIK/Vienna (1999), Konfrontationen/Nickelsdorf (2002, 2000, 1998, 1997), New Jazz Festival/Moers (1998), LMC/London (1998), Szuenetjel/Budapest (1997, 1996), Brueckenmusik/Cologne (1997), KlangArt/Osnabrueck (1997), nieuwe klank/Den Haag (1996), Schreyahner Herbst/Schreyahn (1995), Humannoise/Wiesbaden (1995), CIEF/Copenhagen (1995), conceopts of doing/Stuttgart (1994, 1993), not wanting to say anything about john cage/Cologne (1993) a.m.o. Consumer vs. User is rugged and rhythmic and raw, yet detailed and open and spacious, sort of like a distant cousin of my Sprung album--which was released on Bip-Hop and went on to be nominated for Album of the Year (Electronica) at the Canadian Independent Music Awards. There's even DJ-friendly material on here, too (some straightforward, some more adventurous). This album is mastered by Mark "Vapourspace" Gage, one of my early techno heroes, and features two collaborations with the USA's Massaccesi and a remix of a track from the UK's Tristan "Phonopsia" Watkins (a long-time 313-Detroit mailing-list member). Here is what Phthalo's Phthalocyanine writes about this album: "Consumer vs. User is Andrew's first appearance on Phthalo. It is a focused study, filling out unlikely accent schemes with abstract DSP techniques. The aesthetic is semi-derived from something reminiscent of classic Detroit minimal techno (I think of Terrence Dixon, Kevin Saunderson, and early Plus 8 stuff like the stark, controlled acid bass stabs of Heinrich Tillack AKA Sysex). I also however hear our label, Phthalo, embedded in this work, particularly references to the extensive exploration of heavily processed, raw, beaten-up drum machines given to us by O.S.T. (Chris Douglas) (e.g. Phthalo#09: O.S.T. Live @ Static) and Phthalocyanine (e.g. Phthalo#05: Phthalocyanine: Zacks e.p.) in the late 90's. These ideas work here as the point of departure for a music that is meticulously arranged and much richer in variation than vernacular minimal techno, though much more 'moderate' than O.S.T.'s work. " Stay tuned for details on a remix contest that will involve remixing one of the tracks from Consumer vs. User. The best remixes will be released and there may even be some prizes. Thank you. Take care. Their music, at times, is a cinematic blending of experimental, electronic, psychedelic, country, noise, and free improvisational qualities. Raised on a farm in Idaho, Elise Baldwin now resides in San Francisco, where she recently completed her MFA in Electronic Music at Mills College. When not indulging her interest in pyrokenesis or reading compulsively in the bath, E can be found cooking up aurally hazardous byproducts in her studio or building software instruments for video manipulation. She has whiled away much of the past decade as a sound designer and recording engineer, composing for theater, film, computer games, live performance, and audio installations. Active in the Bay Area experimental music scene, she focuses on solo and collaborative intermedia performance, appearing recently at the ARTSfest 2004, E.S.P. Media Lounge, CalArts CEAIT Festival 2003, the Lab and the National Queer Arts Festival. She is a recipient of the 2004 Frogs Peak Award for Experimental Music. Joel Pickard has an MA in Composition from Mills College in Oakland, CA where he studied with Fred Frith, Alvin Curran, and Pauline Oliveros. He has a BA in Music from Bethel College in St. Paul, MN where he studied classical guitar. One of his most recent interests has been developing a non-traditional language on the pedal steel guitar, an instrument long relegated to providing the weeping backdrop to generations of country music ballads. In addition to freelance work, Joel is active as a performer in both solo and group settings. Seth Warren grew up in New Hampshire, studied English Literature and Religion at Lawrence University in Wisconsin and began an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media at Mills College in 2003. He creates electro-acoustic music, sound sculptures and installations, sound design for theater and film, and performs as a drummer and percussionist in the bay area and abroad. Matt Davignon is an experimental musician living in Oakland, California. Since 1993, he has developed his own unique style of music, which focuses largely on textures, arrhythmic patterns and musical imperfections. Since 2004, he has been focusing primarily on the drum machine. Instead of using it as a rhythm device, he plays the pads manually while processing the sounds through an array of effects devices and samplers, improvising music made of organic-sounding textures, hums, gurgles and crackles. David Michalak frequently performs on lap steel guitar and an assortment of odd percussion instruments. While David is more commonly known as a filmmaker (50 films with original soundtracks since 1971), the visual art side of him seeps inherently into his solo performances and group compositions, which are characterized by shimmering passages, abstract snapshots and haunting representations of natural elements. David has founded the instrumental ensembles Reel Change and Ghost In The House. He's also part of the duo Dr. Bob. The latter 2 groups will have new cds this year. Aram Shelton will be creating music via sample based computer improvisations, combining acoustic samples of saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet and trumpet originally played by Jonathan Crrawford, Steve Hess and himself. Highly active in Chicago's creative music scene, Shelton has recently moved to Oakland, where he's studying at Mills College. His focus continues to be on improvisation based music that combines electronics and acoustics naturally in a live setting. For Immediate Release Music Dances Itself, curated by Junko Wada Artist: Junko Wada Title: Music Dances Itself Label: Sonic Arts Network Format: CD & Booklet Release Date: 05.06 Limited Edition: 1000 Sonic Arts Network is proud to present the seventh instalment of their critically acclaimed CD series - Music Dances Itself, curated by Junko Wada. Music Dances Itself is a deeply personal selection of music from Japanese performance artist and dancer, Junko Wada. The publication was produced and guided by a process of curation, performance and collaboration, which saw Junko coming to the UK and giving an intimate performance at the Jerwood Space, London, and has resulted in a delicate and beautiful exploration of the sound art and music that have impacted upon her life and work. British artist Sarah Waring, who has produced specially commissioned artwork for the publication, has translated the live performance given by Junko into image. Music Dances Itself draws lines between points in Junko?s life; plotting her relationships and life experiences and connecting them together through curation, performance and visual representation. The resulting CD contains some of the great names in contemporary music including Akio Suzuki, Christina Kubisch, Hans Peter Kuhn, David Moss and Rolf Julius as well as rising figures such as Arno P.Jiri Kraehahn and Arnold Dreyblatt. Junko Wada was born in Tokyo, 1955 and after finishing her studies in painting at Musashino University of Art and two solo exhibitions at Kamakura gallery in Tokyo (1982,83) she intensified her interest in performance art and started to develop a very personal dance; replacing screen and brush with body and stage. She has since collaborated with some of the world?s leading composers. Since 1999 she has lived and worked in Berlin and in 2004 she published the book Chidori which documented the performance series she conceived as a collaboration with 20 other artists. www.junkowada.de This publication is part of the critically acclaimed Sonic Arts Network guest-curated CD series; a collection of themes and ideas that explore the edges of music and sound. Past issues have been curated around ?Pataphysics, a call for silence, Adorno inspired improv, outsider and DIY music, impure poetry and the lost art of radio broadcasting. After Music Dances Itself, Stewart Lee, comedian and writer of, amongst other things, Jerry Springer the Opera, will curate the next release in the series (August 2006). By becoming a member of Sonic Arts Network you will receive a complimentary issue of the CD three times a year. They are also available to buy individually from the online shop. I'm very excited about these two performances coming up in early June at Issue Project Room. The first features Stephen Flinn, a percussionist that I met in LA on my recent west coast tour. We were on the same bill at Il Corral and I really enjoyed his set and he liked what I was doing so we made plans to do a collaboration when he came through New York. He also suggested that we invite Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist Michael Evans, to join us. This should be quite a bit more propulsive than my usual fare. I am also thrilled to have been invited to join Emil de Waal and some of his friends for a large ensemble piece which features some of my favorite performers: Gustaf Ljunggren, a great guitarist from Sweden; Erik Sanko, a fantastic player and songwriter who I have been collaborating with recently; and Andy Green, ace producer, great guitar slinger and an old friend of many years. Also on board is Danish keyboardist S?ren Kjaergaard. June 1 8pm $10 Issue Project Room Stephen Flinn | Michael Evans | Bruce Tovsky Percussionists Stephen Flinn and Michael Evans join forces with sound artist Bruce Tovsky for an evening of improvisations, exploring the territory between acoustic instrumentation and electronic manipulation. Flinn's extended technique mastery of the elements of a drum kit and Evans' journeyman creation of sounds are acoustically generated and combined with lo-tech electronics and Tovsky's processed sustainer guitar and cracklebox. Stephen Flinn is a drummer and percussionist who also works with unusual sound sources including self-made insturments and found objects. He lives in San Francisco and spends his time teaching, performing, and writing. Michael Evans is an improvising drummer/percussionist/ multi-instrumentalist/composer whose work investigates and embraces the collision of sound and theatrics. His work with unusual sound sources includes found objects, homemade instruments, the theremin and various digital and homemade analog electronics. He has performed with Jeff Arnal, Claire Barratt, Jac Berrocal, Lol Coxhill, EasSide Percussion, Fast Forward, God is my Co-Pilot, Susan Hefner, Skip LaPlante's Music for Homemade Instruments and others. Bruce Tovsky is a visual/sound artist who for the past several years has been creating live video and sound improvisations in collaboration with artists such as John Hudak, David Linton and Kim Cascone at spaces such as Diapason, Experimental Intermedia, Issue Project Room, and his own installation space 106BLDG30 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. June 8th 8pm $10 Issue Project Room Emil de Waal plus + guests Featuring Swedish multi-musician Gustaf Ljunggren, S?ren Kjaergaard on key instruments and Emil de Waal on drums, percussion and laptop. w/Erik Sanko, Bruce Tovsky and Andy Green Freeform music by Emil de Waal will be presented from his work at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory on Holmen in Copenhagen, Denmark. Accompanying artists will work with Emil's recorded material, adding solos and backing on the preliminary live recordings. Emil de Waal is one of the most heavily engaged drummers in Danish rhythmic music, and has toured internationally and appeared on 150 releases since 1986. De Waal is also known as a band-leader, programmer, composer and arranger for artists such as the Blue Note recording jazz vocalist Caecilie Norby and Grammy Award laureate vocalist Randi Laubek, and has performed with Robert Palmer, Kele Le Roc, Jocelyn Brown, Jon Cleary and others. Multi-instrumentalist Erik Sanko has worked with Skeleton Key, Lounge Lizards, Yoko Ono, John Cale and many others. Matt Ingalls from the Tape Music Center recommended me to contact you. I am producing a sound art/experimental music event series fest in June and July and have run into a bit of a jam. The speakers that were to be lent to us for the series fell through and I am desperately trying to find a someone who could lend us some. I am in need of 4 to 6 active speakers and wondering if there was any possibility that you would be able to lend us some or possibly know of someone I can contact who might be able to. I can offer sponsorship opportunities, if interested, with logo placement in flyers, posters, and website, full page ad in the programs and at the events plus my unending gratitude. Please also let me know if there any other needs you might require to make it beneficial for you too. Called the Soundwave>Series, the not-for-profit event series is in its 2nd season with a theme of Surround>Sound. Shows are being held at The LAB, Luggage Store Gallery and ATA with a live radio session on KPFA. The speakers are needed for 3 shows on July 7 & 8 (plus July 6- setup/soundcheck) at The LAB and July 20th at Luggage Store. I'm attaching a pdf sketch of the proposed installation (2 active speakers will be provided by venue (for a total of 6 to 8 speakers)). Please also check out: www.projectsoundwave.com/series for full details and artists involved in the upcoming events. I appreciate so much your attention on this matter. Please let me know if anything would be at all possible or if you can think of any one who might have speakers available.? My very best, ? The sounds were taken from the parent label Bitlab Records’ 2nd release which is ‘L’?toiles Souriantes’ by Soutien Gorge (the co-founder Andras Hargitai’s & the guitarist Robert Potys’ project). The moving images were recorded, edited and cut by a young local Vj talent in Hungary, namely Mao who does visual performances accompanying many known Hungarian underground Djs’ sets. Not to mention that he often surrounds the Plan B crew (a Hungarian Dj movement which Banyek is proud to be a member of) with his visuals at their parties. This lovely song is one of the album’s standout tracks for sure, and the video became as pleasant as the sounds with its naturalist, and relatively minimalist concept. Urban symbiosis, children, water, flowers, trolleys and romanticism in about 5 minutes. This is the very first Soutien Gorge video. Press play, peace starts." http://www.bitlabrecords.com/cod/cod010.html cheers, Andras Bitlab/Cod _______________________________________________________________________________ Szem?lyi k?lcs?nt interneten kereszt?l, hitelb?r?lati d?j n?lk?l, ak?r 72 h?napos futamid?re! http://www.klikkbank.hu/lakossagi/termekek/szemelyi_kolcson/index.html From autopilote at gmail.com Wed May 31 02:03:57 2006 From: autopilote at gmail.com (vadim) Date: Wed, 31 May 2006 01:03:57 -0500 Subject: [Microsound-announce] AC.28 - Chicago 6/2/06 - Butcher; Roebke + Labycz Message-ID: <2134a0d0605302303kae98a31n431e837fbad8fa10@mail.gmail.com> AC.28 Please join us for the first installment of the 2006 AC Improvised Music Series. Stasisfield have been releasing contemplative and deep listening music for over five years now, and the variety and depth of talent they produce is evident in Michael Trommer's 'Catarqui'. review by Mark McLaren In it's 5th year now Cybersonica has become somewhat of an institution for audio visual artists and audiences alike and this years programme was unlikely to disappoint many. With a focus on taking interactivity into the physical space, each of installations attempt to draw the participant into some form of physical gesture. review by Roger Mills "El Pato Band" El Pato Band are a Bristol based 7 piece ensemble who's music spans a multiplicity of genres and styles. 'Making music for the world, not for pigeon holes' is their mantra and it is indeed an exciting hybrid. A mixture of Spanish, Senegalese, Zimbabwean & European music's, integrating punk, ska & dub influences with a real lo fi sensibility. review by Roger Mills "eXp - If only there were something" eXp is the nom de plume of one Phil Cooper and his release on Zimmer Records, yet another Net label, is entitled 'If Only There Were Something'. Its so full of influences and memories of long forgoton music, obscure things I used to listen to but can't for the life of me remember. review by Mark Francombe "Fhievel: le bapteme de la solitude" Luca Bergero's sounds are simple but rich with warmth and clarity. As anyone in a busy urban environment might do, I first listened to this release through headphones on the way to the work and this is the completely wrong method to approaching a release such as this. review by Justin Hardison "Latitude" "Latitude" is 21 minutes of processed field recordings, sinewaves, amplified metal objects, white noise and feedback composed by Phil Julian under his Cheapmachines pseudonym. Starting like a gamelan air conditioning unit, this piece slowly ramps up in volume and intensity. Sounds begin fizzing and disintergrating into thicker and heavier wedges of crip and beautiful distortion. review by Mark McLaren "Lee Noyes and Phil Hargreaves" An intriguing free download comes from Lee Noyes and Phil Hargreaves entitled A present from the pickpocket. The duo apparently made this piece via mail sending tapes back and forth between Liverpool UK and Dunedin, New Zealand, over the course of four years. review by Mark Francombe "Month Of Sundays - Live A/V Internet Perfrormances" This summer Furthernoise.org is hosting a month of Sunday afternoon live audio visual internet performances throughout June 06 in the online file mixing platform Visitors Studio. Featuring some of the most innovative international A/V artists mixing remotely in various geographic locations and time zones http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php? review by Roger Mills http://www.furthernoise.org "Spirit Elevating Brains 'Ideact' & 'Predictable' EP - SEB" Spirit Elevating Brains - 'Ideact' & 'Predictable' EP is a two CDR by Brazilian Sebastian Alvarez AKA SEB. Released through the German label Chmafu Nocords this DVD pack contains the 16 track album 'Ideact' and it's companion EP 'Predictable' which is also part of a lager body of work. review by Roger Mills "The Big Picture by Mike Willox" The Big Picture, released on Sargasso, is Mike Willox's debut album. According to the label's description, the album began life during Willox's tour in Japan, where he collected recordings of the sounds and atmospheres of Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka. The cover features Japanese signs, although these are reversed?perhaps partially representing the process Willox used to manipulate sounds. review by Alex Young "Translation as Rhythm" Errant Bodies first CD release 'Translation as Rhythm' by Jarrod Fowler is a monument to the serious work both parties have done previously on the philosophies of sound. This, however, makes it almost impossible to review. 37 minutes of clicks, based on Wittgentstein; robots arguing about Joseph Kosuth as well as Erik Satie and John Cage on 'backing vocals' What exactly is going on here? review by Mark McLaren http://www.furthernoise.org
