(re-issue) available now Message-ID: <0ea1c06cef1908012264d5c9da49855f@3particles.com> 12k.MARCH 4.2006 The re-issue of Taylor Deupree's landmark cd "Stil." is now available on 12k's Limited Edition Series. the "Stil." re-issue (12k2002) comes in a hand-numbered edition of 500 and has been remastered at a high resolution (96k). it is available now and shipping from our online shop: http://www.12k.com/shop "stil." press release on 12k.com: http://www.12k.com/2002.html what the press had to say about "Stil.":?http://www.12k.com/1020reviews.html - - - -? Stil. is the much anticipated follow-up to Taylor Deupree?s critically acclaimed 2001 cd Occur (12k1013). Where Occur found itself exploring the non-repeating patterns of nature, inspired by the sounds of life outside of Deupree?s Brooklyn studio, Stil. was initially inspired by the work of photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto, whose Seascapes images masterfully combine repetition and minute change. Stil. thus became the sonic opposite of Occur: a set of compositions based on extreme repetition and the exploration of stillness.? Arranged in four long pieces, Stil. is based on the complex repetition of looping passages. The underlying idea is that a pattern repeated for long enough begins to reveal hidden pulses and movements not initially apparent. Elements and frequencies overlap to create subtle new intersections, drawing the listener in, and suspending them in this brief moment of frozen time.? The sound of Stil. is built using melodic and granular passages juxtaposed in variable-length loops, creating layered and imbedded rhythms and highly variable structures of repetition. For example, the title track is based entirely on oscillating variations in a single 0.33 second tonal fragment. Subtle manipulations of the sound?s loop positions create an extraordinary palette of movement and fluctuation, rewarded by deep listening. Stil. is an engaging and hypnotic listen, drawing on Deupree?s past experience in ambient music. The pieces on Stil., while considered ?long? by the usual standards of CD track times, are only fragments of what are intended to be longer works that extend for many hours. This release has inspired a new direction for Deupree?s future work: exploring the freezing of time and the possibilities of stillness within the temporal medium of sound. - - - - [ THE WIRE, UK] A steady, lulling, synthetic ambient drone with a slow two-note oscillation, a pulse of sorts, opens Deupree?s latest minimalist foray. The ears are bathed in a soft hum, with gentle changes in density, and after some minutes he introduces barely audible electric nicks, or pricks of static with no breadth of depth - just minute incisions on the temporal surface. It?s a plain, meditative style - just four lengthy tracks examining simple misphased pulses, or delicately modifying a single quavering whirr like a muted generator noise, soft and woolly. And yet, compared to some of the sparser pulse productions on the 12k label, Deupree allows a certain amount of organic breadth here. One track segment starts to shift harmonically to different one levels, serenaded by various mysterious clicks, peeps, and breathings from the digital woodland; another is more of a looped soundscape with hints of tolling bells and bowed bass emerging behind the veil of digital abstraction.? [ ALL MUSIC GUIDE, USA] Stil . has one weakness: It?s too short. There are four tracks on here that are equally intruiging separated from one another or listened to in their entirety. But these compositions were designed to unfold over a long duration of time, too long to be documented on any sort of media. Stil . focuses on the variations found in changes to minute sound loops??layered one on top of another, and the results are breathtaking. Warm sinewaves that aren?t glitched up to levels of pretensiousness are abundant, giving the notion of activity to what could possibly be deemed frozen and static. And Stil . can be deceptive if close listening isn?t employed -- the results are so subtle that it can lead to a notion that it?s nothing but a bunch of stagnant drones carelessly looped together. But nothing could be further from the truth, as it?s easily Deupree?s finest, most beautifully executed release to date. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Benjamin's tuba cuts deep and smothers - partials ringing out like decades old tape noise. The source recordings for this piece were taken from an improvisation in Amsterdam earlier in the year. Mastered at PanicStudios by John McCaig. Benjamin J Mansavage Klein grew up in Sheboygan, Wisconsin attending Catholic Mass on Saturday nights and his father's Protestant church service on Sunday morning. It makes sense then that Benjamin identifies the best with hymns sung by warbly old church ladies accompanied by out of tune pianos. The Sheboygan county area is best known for its golf, bratwurst, and toilet industry; Benjamin is most familiar with the last of these, spending a number of summers manufacturing toilet seats for the Bemis Company, and he admits that this has lead to an industrial tinge on his ear. A member of the improv group ICELU (luv004) Benjamin tries to explore everything you are not supposed to do with a tuba. He currently resides in a transitive state, traveling abroad from August 1, 2005 to August 1, 2006. The second disc is remixes of that album done by Chance Anatomie, which walk the tight rope between glitchy and very organic. Limited edition of 30 hand numbered copies. "R?ckw?rts Backwards" is his debut full-length album recorded between 2003 and 2005 in his adopted hometown Hamburg and his childhood home in the Black Forest located in the south of Germany. With a background in many musical styles (from Psychedelia to pure Computer Music) BTC's music is never easy to pin down. This album is essentially created from scratchy shellac and vinyl loops merged with ambience field recordings (with some voice manipulations and kitchen gamelan thrown in for good measure). The warm hiss of analogue recording techniques combined with the apparently antique sounds of vintage organs, acoustic & electric guitars, pianos, glockenspiel and mbira used on these tracks generate a kind of hyperreal, fake nostalgia playing with one's perception of a pseudo-recollection. The layering and hypnotic repetition of short loops extracted from old Psychedelia, Free Jazz, Vaudeville and Traditional records reveal a haunting melodic quality sometimes not distinguishable within the original source material, evoking a hovering feeling of bittersweet melancholy with an omnipresent, slightly disturbing atmosphere hidden beneath the surface. The 8 songs constantly sway back and forth between simple, almost naive arrangements and dense surreal drones with rare, yet intense distorted climaxes making this album one constantly absorbing listening experience. --- --- some early reviews: "Richter basically revisits pre-existing melodies by using shellac and vinyl loops, adding some bizarre vocals here ("Bees"), some toy gamelan there ("Virtuosity Is A Means To An End") and environmental recordings, creating floating and fragile soundscapes which will appeal anyone into Philip Jeck's humane turntablism. Tracks like "Laccifer Lacca", with its looped choirs and a slowed down, hyper-dilated string plucking, or "March of the Vivian Girls", with a triumphant crescendo of distorted melodies and skipping snare drums, show Richter's talent for out there but emotionally moving compositions - I'd dare say "experimental pop" (there are a lot of pops throughout, actually) if it didn't suggest radically different things." Eugenio Maggio / Chain DLK "The whole album is very dream-like, mystical and fascinating, like being in the middle of a fog bank and loosing your sense of direction but always knowing that you'll find your way out one way or the other." Mats Gustafsson / The Broken Face "His pulverous, gravelly electronic laminates are liberally dosed with digitally altered field recordings, incorporated in a way that adds to the musicality of the whole. The title track is chalky and crackly as space dust, recalling Fennesz or Tim Hecker's crumbly, floury vapournoise. "Levitation" is like the intro to a Gas track, a sampled unidentifiable musical source flayed to reveal the heart; "March Of The Vivian Girls" a militaristic step over a contorted Weimar movie sample. You can clearly hear him mixing, as though watching a painter crushing pigments from silica and lapis blocks. As with so much currrent laptop sound, the lines between organic and digital are invisible, a reminder that no one thought of music as 'organic' anyway until the computer arrived on the scene." Rob Young / The Wire "Brilliant und extrem angenehm, eine Platte die zurecht eine schnurrende Katze auf dem Cover hat." ***** Bleed / De:Bug --- --- Also, there's a brand new Black To Comm lathe cut picture disc 7" (limited edition of 100) available from the website: http://www.blacktocomm.org or try A-Musik, Eclipse, Time-Lag, Fusetron, Drone, Norman... --- --- The John Hegre/Maja Ratkje "Ballads" CD is pretty much finished and will be available in the next few weeks. Taking the Material Culture Project project a step further ? a project whose ultimate goal consists in drawing a parallel between the landscape and its indigenous museums and ecomuseums and its artistic interpretation of it ? Eco e Narciso delves deeper into the various languages employed as a means of investigation: Art in 2003, Photography in 2004, Literature in 2005. Now, in 2006, it?s the turn of Music and Sound to have their say. Eco e Narciso. Cultura Materiale/Musica, curated by Daniela Cascella and Rebecca De Marchi, will involve the contribution of eight internationally acclaimed experimental musicians and sound artists, who have been commissioned five site-specific sound installations ? one for each location selected among the ecomuseum network of the Provincia di Torino. The official opening ceremony of the installations is scheduled for the 15th and the 16th July 2006. It will be preceded by a series of meet & greet / listening sessions hosted by the curators and the musicians themselves at the Caff? Procope ? Juvarra Theatre in Turin, in Spring 2006. BRUNO DORELLA, MARCO MILANESIO, FABRIZIO MODONESE PALUMBO (Italy) > Entrance building to the Cavour Canal in Chivasso Three of the most important artists in the Italian underground musical scene will be working on an audio installation which will be positioned inside the entrance building to the Cavour Canal in Chivasso, an architectonic jewel of the end of the XIX century. A t?te ? t?te between architectural geometries and challenging shadow-plays of sounds. JOHN DUNCAN (U.S.A./Italy) and VALERIO TRICOLI (Italy) > The IPCA Ecomuseum ? (the former) Piedmontese Factory of Aniline-based Dyes > in Ciri? One of the masters of experimentation with sound, who?s been living in Italy for years now, collaborates for the first time with one of the most promising young musicians of the Italian experimental scene. Both artists will face the challenging experience of bringing back to life (through the presence of sound) the vast spaces of the former dye-factory in Ciri?, a place full of history and awaiting a new employment. JACOB KIRKEGAARD (Denmark) > Naturalistic itinerary of the Val Servin course of the Antonio Castagneri > Alpine Guides Ecomuseum in Balme The young Danish sound recordist, who released last year Eldfjall, a cd using recordings taken in the proximity of volcanoes in Iceland, will be collecting sounds around the area of Balme, the land of alpine guides. These recordings will be subsequently installed and played across an itinerary that will develop along the mountain huts in the area. STEPHAN MATHIEU (Germany) >MUNLAB Ecomuseum of Clay in Cambiano One of the most interesting voices in the ?post-digital? approach towards musical research, Stephan Mathieu composed some of the most fascinating albums in the last few years, interweaving lyrical inspiration and long, melodic parts. The musician, who has already worked in the past on sound installations in an industrial environment, will be working on the complex structure of the clay-factory in Cambiano, active to this day. STEVE RODEN (U.S.A.) > Entrance hall to the ?Uffici 1? building ? MAAM in Ivrea Not new to projects related to sound interacting in an active and empathic way both with architecture (the Summer Pavillion by Alvaro Siza at the Serpentine Gallery in London, the Schindler House in Los Angeles) and with design, Steve Roden will produce a track for the homeland of Adriano Olivetti, to be installed in the entrance hall to the Uffici 1 building, that dates back to the 60?s, characterized by an exagonal wooden staircase and glass roof. Why was sound chosen as the artistic subject which will be featured in the 2006 edition of Eco e Narciso? Without any doubts, sound as a means of strong and independent expression has been gaining the attention of museums and institutions during the end of the last millennium. Experimentation with sound (and its combination with the visual and performance arts) has been around for a long time and therefore has a very long history and heritage: however, only recently has this history started to emerge and sound has gained the right, along with all the other artistic languages, to conquer a space outside the traditional ?boundaries? where music is performed and listened to. Sound has set off to conquer everyday-life spaces, museums, exhibitions. The artists taking part in the Eco e Narciso project don?t use sound as a linear medium (i.e developing along a well-defined time span): they rather employ it to give birth to places and atmospheres, to enhance the charm of a location, to underline its hidden contrasts, as an exquisitely plastic means of creating ?audio-landscapes?. This is the reason why the musicians involved have been asked to use solely sound to create their installations, without resorting to no other artistic languages: the curators? aim is to give as much space as possible to a means of expression that, notwithstanding its immateriality and elusiveness, has the ability to capture the attention in a profound and subtle manner. It does so often venturing into new ground as regards common perception, but this is ultimately the hidden challenge in the project: to attain a new kind of participation in the public and, through the employment of sounds throughout the ecomuseums ? sounds that are strictly connected to the places themselves ? try to trigger new interest in these locations, showing them under a different light, and uncovering their often-concealed features. The project intends to address the local public as much as the international one, by commissioning a number of challenging new site?specific works from the musicians. During the spring of 2004, an online forum on the website of contemporary art magazine Artforum revolved around the reasons of the growing visibility and spreading of the culture of sound in the artistic milieu during the last years. During the aforesaid forum, current issues regarding the intersection of sound, spatial issues and the visual arts were discussed. It was clear that the culture of sound as an expressive medium capable of conveying the complex perceptive experience of space was progressively becoming more important; all this is today partially reflected in the growing awareness of museums and institutions as regards the renewed interest shown towards this language. Among the many exhibitions in this area are Volume. Bed of Sound at the PS1 in New York (2000), Sonic Boom at the Hayward Gallery in London (2000), Sound Art-Sound As Media at the ICC in Tokyo (2000), Sonic Process (2002) and Sons et Lumi?res (2005) at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Frequenzen [Hz] at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt (2002), and the vast audio-installation Raw Materials created by Bruce Nauman in the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern in London in 2004/05. Along with the enterprises undertaken by the above-mentioned museums, a series of non-institutional ventures in site-specific locations are worthy of equal relevance: though more difficult to communicate and document and often barely recognizable, they provide an equally significant and atmospheric alternative to the institutional spaces. For instance, the sound installations by Max Neuhaus who, since the late 70?s introduced sounds in various environments, starting from Times Square in New York (the installation is still existing to this day) and moving onto other outdoors locations. The sound experimentation airing on several especially dedicated radio stations (like WPS1 in New York, or ResonanceFM in London) is also worthy of interest ? as the hundreds of events and site-specific projects impossible to list here comprehensively. Eco e Narciso / Music is oriented towards this particular area of research, whose boundaries are still little defined and, because of this, full of surprises and unexpected turns; the aim remains the active involvement of the public in the discovery of landscapes and places of sound from a new and stimulating point of view. The project is divided into three phases: 1. A preliminary study phase, thus organized - Sojourn on location of the musicians, who will thus enter in contact with the local life during a period of about five days and will be recording sounds in the area of assignment ? sounds which will be subsequently reworked into the installations - Meet & greet / presentation in Turin where the landmarks of each musician?s work will be relived through a series of guided listening sessions and a talk with the curators > March Monday 20 th 2006 ? h 17,30 Bruno Dorella, Marco Milanesio, Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo > April Thursday 13 th 2006 ? h 17,30 Stephan Mathieu > May Wednesday 3 rd 2006 ? h 17,00 Jacob Kirkegaard - John Duncan/Valerio Tricoli 2. Installation of the musicians? work in the ecomuseums and official opening ceremony - The artists will develop site-specific sound installations that will be placed in the various locations. - > The opening ceremony is scheduled for July 15th and 16th 2006 and the > installations will remain open to the public till September 2006. 3. CD/catalogue that will contain the excerpts from the audio tracks of each installation, with a booklet with texts by the curators of the project. Within this theme, visiting artists Sara Kolster and Derek Holzer explore the connections between experimental audiovisual culture using the Internet and open source software. Kolster and Holzer find inspiration in the history of experimental cinema and electroacoustic music, as well as contemporary video and microsound practices. Together they explore contemporary ideas about ?Live Cinema? through the use of Pure Data, an open source tool for manipulating sound and image. Gathered from various locations around the world, sound and image manifest into dream like journeys through Kolster and Holzer's live performance and net.art projects. Visually, Kolster's work deconstructs the analog/digital dichotomy while similarly, Holzer's digital sound treatments highlight and enhance the phonographic sources he collects. Kolster and Holzer reject the use of common, commercial production methods and the default, commercial artworks that these methods often produce, preferring instead to program their own software, build their own hardware interfaces and actively participate in the free and open source communities which surround these activities. Traveling from the Netherlands, Kolster and Holzer will be performing, presenting and teaching their practice at Video In Studios, 1965 Main Street, Vancouver, BC, throughout the month of March 2006. 1. resonanCITY: performance Friday, March 10th, 2006 @ 8pm Live audiovisual performance Both Holzer and Kolster find inspiration in the history of experimental cinema and electro acoustic music, as well as in contemporary "live cinema", improv and microsound practices. Many sounds and images in our everyday lives slip past our notice simply because they are too small, or because we lack the proper receivers to pick them up. resonanCITY is an ongoing project to gather these microscopic sights and sounds from various cities, and to amplify and transform them. Their performance work centers around the use of photographic transparencies, found objects, field recordings and sparse instrumentals to create layers of interrelated sound and image. 2. SoundTransit.nl: presentation Sunday, March 12th, 2006 @ 2pm SoundTransit.nl is an online, collaborative soundscape project by Sara Kolster, Marc Boon and Derek Holzer dedicated to field recording and phonography. On this site, you can book a sonic transit through a wide range of different locations recorded from around the world, or you can search the database for specific sounds by keyword, artist, country or location. A presentation of this project can include an introduction to field recording and phonography, a discussion on the importance of open licenses such as Creative Commons, or a technical discussion of the structure of the website. 3. visibleSOUND/audibleIMAGE: screening and lecture Thursday, March 16th, 2006 @ 8pm This lecture and screening, made up of "historic" and contemporary works from the collection of Montevideo/Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst (Amsterdam), investigates the interrelation of what has often considered to be two separate disciplines: sound and image. Works shown will include: 1) Steina & Woody Vasulka: Violin Power [US][1978] 2) Steina & Woody Vasulka: BAD [US][1979] 3) Servaas: 4 Poems [NL][1981] 4) Matthew Schlanger: Lizard Hearts [US][1986] 5) Nicolas Provost: Papillon d'Amour [BE][2003] 6) Jan van Nuenen: SET_4 [NL][2003] 7) Bas van Koolwijk: five [NL][2002] 8) Derek Holzer & Sara Kolster: resonanCITY [NL] [2005] 4. Classes have a limited capacity. Workshop Details: http://www.videoinstudios.com/programming_details.php About the Artists Sara Kolster [NL 1978] is a visual artist with a background in design. Recently, the focus of her work shifted more towards video and film; capturing details from urban locations, visualizing fragments of stories of these environments. She uses different strategies, from time-based media (video, film, photography) to appropriated research methods belonging to different observational disciplines (journalism, documentary & archeology). Derek Holzer [USA 1972] is a sound artist with a background in radio and streaming media technologies. His work has focused on capturing and transforming small, unnoticed sounds from various natural and urban locations, networked collaboration strategies, experiments in improvisational sound and on the use of free software such as Linux and Pure-Data. Their work resonanCITY has been performed live in the US, Holland, Brazil, former Yugoslavia, the Baltic States and at the Transmediale 05 festival in Berlin. resonanCITY also took the Second Prize at the 11th International WRO Media Art Biennale in Wroclaw, Poland in May 2005. They each spend their minimal free time searching, capturing, processing, manipulating, producing, engineering, and designing sounds for all applications. Their main musical output is the ongoing experimental project smgsap, which presents an even blend of electronic and analog textures, using a variety of sources from field recordings, drones, musical & nonmusical sounds as well as manipulated live audio and instruments. They have performed in and created sound installations for numerous settings over the course of their six years of working together. In addition to performing and recording as smgsap they also host an experimental music series called "The Sounds Around" under the name Parabolic Productions. The series takes place in a 5000 sq. ft. ballroom and kitchen space and utilizes the 20 ft. diameter dome in the ceiling with speaker/audience placement for optimal reflection and enhancement. They are also both active members of FLOOD, the Long Beach based artist group that produces the annual SoundWalk event. SoundWalk is a one night only event that sonically takes over the entire neighborhood of the Arts District in Downtown Long Beach with indoor and outdoor site-specific sound installations. Participants range from local to international sound artists and each year a catalog & CD compilation are produced for the event. http://smgsap.org/paraprod//smgsaptemp.html +++++ mem1 is a collaborative venture between cellist Laura Thomas-Merino & laptop artist m. cera. In their improvisation-based performances, the cello is manipulated using custom software built by cera in max/msp. Extended cello technique is magnified by live signal processing, which is in turn influenced by the sounds produced by the cello. The result is a subtle electroacoustic hybrid that culminates not in a duet between two individuals, but in a single performance by a fused and cohesive instrument. Utilizing a limitless palate of sonic possibilities, mem1?s sound is a constant evolution of textures ranging from sparse to dense, ambient to beat-driven tranquil to volatile?the listener is submerged in layers of distinctive, complex patterns which provide a focus not on melody or lyricism but an opportunity to listen beyond such structural confines. There is a sense of narrative, but one that unravels organically, almost in slow motion. mem1 has performed with the renowned Penderecki String Quartet and have recently been invited to play at CEAIT 2006 at by media artist Kadet Kuhne. Message-ID: CALL FOR WORK AND PARTICIPATION ++Art Work and Creative Practices ++Papers Presentations, Panels, Workshops, Intellectual Environments and Practices Perform.Media ? A Transdisciplinary Festival of Creativity, Research, Theory and Technoculture September 29th-October 14th, 2006, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana Website: http://performthemedia.net DEADLINE FOR PAPER PRESENTATIONS Deadline for Abstracts: April 30th, 2006 Acceptance Notification: May 15th, 2006 DEADLINE FOR PANELS, WORKSHOPS, INTELLECTUAL ENVIRONMENTS AND PRACTICES Deadline for Proposals: April 30th, 2006 Acceptance Notification: May 15th, 2006 DEADLINE FOR ART WORK AND CREATIVE PRACTICES Deadline: May 15th, 2006 Acceptance Notification: June 15th, 2006 Perform.Media is an international media arts festival and symposium creating an innovative venue for creative and intellectual work around the momentary process and performance in new media art and culture. We begin with the premise that newer media, along with modes of representation and narrative, embody momentary processes from roots in cybernetics and the biological, to the embodied performance of interface, improvised network exchanges and spontaneous social acts in multi-user synthetic worlds. Such mediated experiences and actions form meaning in sense experience and performance along with interpretive processes like depiction and reception. The dynamic, reciprocal process of the user(s) generating, configuring, interacting, choosing and authoring is an important component of new media and technologies, expressed in both the design of the media and in the momentary, improvised performance of the participant. The festival and symposium seeks the accordance and collision of ideas through the lens of interdisciplinarity, exploring the performance of new media and the performative qualities of human- computer and technologically mediated social interaction. Perform.Media will examine sense experience and meaning at the threshold and in the performing action, along with the reflexive construction of narrative, where creative play, social practices, augmented embodiment and exploratory methods establish processes that spin out, overlapping locales of influence, in networked, ?glocal?, mobile, participatory, socially interactive, live processed, locative, responsive and multi-user realms. Perform.Media aims to examine and melt the usual spatial and temporal prescriptions of author and spectator in art, creative work and intellectual practice. Perform.Media traverses transdisciplinary territories in collaborations and social feedbacks of live sound +image, interactive and game media, HCI, improvisations, performance processes, interactive gallery environments, mobile and locative work, live art works, net.art, research practices, theoretical discussion, paper presentations, workshops, intimacy and communication both online and off. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Submission forms can be downloaded at- http://performthemedia.net/ submissions.html ++Paper Presentations, Panels, Workshops, Intellectual Environments and Practices The Perform.Media symposium welcomes submissions of papers, panel discussions, workshops and intellectual environments around the theme of the festival- performance process in new media, theory, research and technological practice. The Perform.Media symposium seeks to promote discussion and collaboration. The environment of the symposium will be conversation based. Proposals for panels, workshops and presentations that energize into new areas of intellectual exchange will be welcomed. All presentations will be moderated and encourage participation, questioning and debate. An online forum, discussion and net.art exhibition will precede the festival. Paper abstracts will be published on the Perforrm.Media website. ++Art Work and Creative Practices Work criteria- Perform.Media seeks new media work and proposals for black box, white cube or network that engage in the practice of performing media or media performance. We are looking for work that asks the questions- How does the ?doing,? the performing inform us in this new media? How does this media perform, what does it do and how does it engage us? Types of work- Ambient/Ubiquitous Technologies and Creative Practices, Avatars, Dance/Embodied work, Environments and Space Based work, Games, HCI, Interactive/Participatory Installation, Interface Art, Live Art, Locative Media, Mapping, Mobile Screens, Mobile/Wireless Devices, Net.Art, New Media Performances, Simulations and Synthetic Worlds, Theatrical Pieces, Video Processing and VJ/DJ styles? Gon?alves & Kenneth Kirschner : Resonant Objects" (review) Presented in New York last year as an installation, Resonant Objects is the result of a collaboration between Kirschner, Gon?alves and the Experimental Intermedia Foundation. Listening to this disc brings us to discussions about the presentation of sound art. How related is this CD to the original piece? http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=97 review by Mark McLaren "Dinosaur Dinosaur" (review) The "DINOSAUR DINOSAUR" press release seems to make it required reviewing to name this genre 'beatpunk'. Which, I guess is a reasonable request: The album has that thrown-together plundered sound, where the so-called punk aesthetic of similar artists such as KID606 can either grate or work depending on the how all juxtapositions work out. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=89 review by Mark McLaren "Inside Voices" (review) James Wyness is a sound artist based in Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders. Inside Voices represents his first release on his label Faraway, and is a limited edition release of 100 copies. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=99 review by Alex Young "jgrzinich - insular regions" (review) John Grzinich's new album reflects the surroundings and pace of life in a small Estonian village called Mooste, where the sound was recorded and assembled. The work takes the form of two long pieces (18 minutes and 44 minutes respectively) which could be pigeon-holed as 'deep-listening drones with field recording textures'. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=93 review by Mark McLaren "Kiss Me Deadly" (review) Misty Medley is KISS ME DEADLY's new album on Alien8 records. Without hearing this Montreal band's first album I can't tell if they've come on in leaps and bounds, found this a 'difficult' second album, or even have shied away from their earlier influences... http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=100 review by Mark McLaren "LINUX OPEN SOURCE SOUND [l.o.s.s.]" (review) LINUX OPEN SOURCE SOUND [l.o.s.s.] is a great idea: compile a bunch of music made with and promoting free, open source sound-battering software such as Pure Data, Supercollider and audacity. The finished tracks are available for free as ogg vorbis files [think vegan mp3 files]. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=95 review by Mark McLaren "Music and Climate Change - Various Artists" (review) In January 2006, a unique creative opportunity was announced to the North-East's universities ? a call for Music and Art based on the theme of climate change. Realising the inspirational quality of the call and the fact that this wasn't just a regional concern, David JC de la Haye requested Newcastle University allowed him to open the call out to a wider audience so that others may voice their concerns through their chosen medium. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=103 review by DJC de la Haye "Sess - Superstreng - Mikroknytes" (review) Sess-Superstreng is the first studio recorded release in a couple of years from the honourable Knytes of the realm of drone by Washington DC's Mikroknytes. Released on this occasion through Commie 64's new label Kavekaveti it bares all the hallmarks of the sound they have honed over the years which is both gentle one minute and terrifying the next. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=92 review by Roger Mills "Text-Sound Compositions A Stockholm Festival" (review) 'Text-Sound Compositions - A Stockholm Festival' is a truly delicious CD box set re-releasing roughly six hours of sound poetry that originally came out on limited edition vinyl between 1968-77. This series was made in collaboration with the intermedia organisation Fylkingen and the Swedish National Radio as part of yearly festivals that were held in Stockholm. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=101 review by Mark McLaren "The Caution Curves CD" (review) The Caution Curves are a cosy electro acoustic combo comprising Amanda Huron, drums and percussion, Tristana Fiscella, vocals and guitar, and Rebecca Mills on her laptop, hailing from Washington DC, who's music is refreshingly nice (as opposed to nasty). http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=90 review by Mark Francombe "The Science of Imaginary Solutions" (review) 'Pataphysics is a compilation curated by Andrew Hugill, based on the work of Alfred Jarry. It is the best thing ever containing not one but two absinthe soaked orgies of funk, some gun toting poets, time travelling silence and a backwards speaking dwarfs looking for the number of a good lawyer. What more could a pair of ears wish for? http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=102 review by Mark McLaren "Truth Becomes Death - Nadja" (review) In the time it has taken me to write this review, Aidan Baker may well have completed several new albums, such are the feats of his productivity. He describes himself as someone who: 'explores the deconstructive sonic possibilities of the electric guitar as a primary sound source, creating music that ranges from experimental to post-rock to contemporary classical' http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=88 review by Mark McLaren "Untitled Songs: 49 years from Gesang der J?nglinge" (review) Portugal's Sirr records present a 2 CD compilation of 21 artists working in some way from Stockhausen's piece Gesang der J?nglinge. Sirr's reasons for its 'non-homage' is that the piece has become almost public domain by being "taught in music lessons, and held high as a landmark of a specific style or method or epoch". http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=94 review by Mark McLaren Roger Mills Editor, Furthernoise From gtc at chello.se Mon Mar 13 09:03:34 2006 From: gtc at chello.se (Jair-Rohm) Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2006 15:03:34 +0100 Subject: [Microsound-announce] audiounit 5 Message-ID: <7f4aef3af112b6e2f33664324e72d845@chello.se> High, If you're in the Hamburg, Germany area on the 25th of March, come by audiounit (http://www.audiounit.fragmentedmedia.org) and check out my set. It has been performed live in the USA, Canada, Holland, Brazil, Poland, Serbia, the Baltic States and at the Transmediale 05 festival in Berlin. Their Portland date is part of a limited North American engagement. Both Sara and Derek find inspiration in the history of experimental cinema and electroacoustic music, as well as in contemporary video and microsound practices, and a variety of live sources such as photographic film and found objects are used to generate the visions and sounds. Kolster and Holzer also reject the use of common, commercial production methods and the default, commercial artworks that these methods often produce, preferring instead to program their own software, build their own hardware interfaces and actively participate in the free and open source communities which surround these activities. They also explore contemporary ideas about "Live Cinema" and demonstrate the principles and tools explained during their Pure Data workshops. This evening will also feature improvisational audio and video from local artists Zachary Reno, Seth Nehil, and Rob Tyler, among others. Cost is $5 at the door, starts around 9pm. 2) Pure Data Workshop for Sound and Vision Wednesday March 29 - Thursday March 30, 1-5 pm A workshop on Pure Data, GEM and PDP for sound and video artists. Pure Data is a free and open source software, a modular and object-oriented programming environment geared towards manipulation and synthesis of both audio and video. It is similar to the commercial package "Max/MSP" , and can be used on Linux, Mac OSX and Windows. Participants will learn the basic "grammar" and "vocabulary" of Pure Data, GEM and PDP, upon which objects for sound, 3D and video will be added. Emphasis will be placed on direct connections between sound and image through three different methods: influence of sound on image, influence of image on sound and the use of common "control data" for both image and sound. The workshop spans two days, and is geared as a ground-up introduction and interface between the programming environment and artist. Attendance of the first day is a prerequisite for the second day, since information and concepts introduced in the beginning of the workshop will be used later on. Students will also be required to bring their own computer, however PD software will be provided, for either Linux, Mac OS 10.3/4 or Windows. (With the exception of PDP, which is not available for Windows.) The workshop starts at 1pm each day, and should last about four hours. Registration costs $75, or $50 with a Student ID. You can sign up at Apotheke, payment will be required to hold a spot. Sign up early, as space is limited. Full schedule info is tagged to the end of this release, and can also be found at the venue's website, http://www.apotheke-nw.com. - More information on both of these events, and about some of the artists involved, can be found on these websites: http://www.umatic.nl http://www.sarako.net http://www.onomato.org http://sethnehil.artdocuments.org/ http://www.vcr100.com Thanks! Hope to see you there. Apotheke 1314 NW Glisan St., #2a . 503.241.7866 www.apotheke-nw.com ****** Workshop Schedule >> DAY ONE: BASICS & AUDIO Installation Clinic. The first part of the workshop will be devoted to installing Pure Data, GEM, PDP and several other externals on the participants' computers. For PD and GEM, Mac OSX, Windows and most Linux distributions can be accommodated. Please note that PDP is NOT available for Windows, and only runs on Linux or OSX 10.3/4! Pure Data as a Language. Like learning any new language, PD starts with learning vocabulary and grammar. In this case, we will learn the names of many common objects and the syntax of how to use them, in a clear "Geek-to-English" translation which makes the complex data-flow operations of PD understandable to non-programmers. Pure Data for Sound Synthesis. PD has powerful signal-processing abilities, and we will explore these by building a simple, monophonic synthesizer controllable from either a MIDI device or from the keyboard of your computer. Different types of sound synthesis, such as Additive, Subtractive, Amplitude Modulation, Frequency Modulation and Wavetable Synthesis will be covered, along with the use of filters and delays for a variety of effects. Pure Data for Sample Manipulation. Because PD uses a range of very basic building-blocks to store and playback sampled sound, a wide range of manipulations are possible. Here, we will explore pitchshifting, time stretching, looping and basic granular synthesis. Other uses of data stored in tables for control purposes will also be touched on. DAY TWO: VIDEO & CROSS-SYNTHESIS. Pure Data for 3D: GEM. GEM is an external library used in PD for moving 3D graphics under the OpenGL protocol. It is also an ideal environment for VJ mixing. We will explore how to create and manipulate simple 3D objects, how to texture them with images, how to playback and mix video clips in GEM and how to use a live camera input. Pure Data for Video: PDP. PDP (Pure Data Packet) is used primarily for video playback and effects filters. We will investigate PDP for direct video synthesis, for the playback and mixing of (audio)visual clips and for the processing of a live camera input. PDP includes several tools for the analysis of video for movement, change and color, which in turn can be used to control sound playback and other events in PD. Pure Data for Audio Analysis. We continue our investigation of the audio side of Pure Data by looking at different methods of analyzing sound signals for pitch and amplitude information. The data we extract from the audio can be used to either (re)synthesize new sounds or to control 3D or video graphics manipulations. Pure Data for Cross-Synthesis. Combining what we have learned so far about sound and image in PD, we'll explore the interrelation of sound and image in three ways: the analysis of sound to control video (PD-->GEM/PDP), the analysis of video to control sound (PDP-->PD) and the use of data to simultaneously control sound and image (PD, GEM, PDP). -- derek holzer ::: http://www.umatic.nl ---Oblique Strategy # 73: "From nothing to more than nothing" From gintaskr at takas.lt Wed Mar 15 15:42:06 2006 From: gintaskr at takas.lt (gintas k) Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2006 12:42:06 -0800 Subject: [Microsound-announce] =?iso-8859-1?q?Fw=3A_=5BCr=F3nica=5D_mail_0?= =?iso-8859-1?q?32=2C_06=2E03=2E2006?= Message-ID: <001001c64870$ecb8d130$0100a8c0@User1> ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CR?NICA MAIL 032 06.03.2006 http://www.cronicaelectronica.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Cr?nica is proud to present two brand new releases: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ GINTAS K LENGVAI / 60 X ONE MINUTE AUDIO COLOURS OF 2KHZ SOUND 2CD, CR?NICA 024~2006 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CD1: Lengvai 01: Lengvai 02: Ilgiau Ilgiau 03: Kulgrinda 04: Koto 05: Early Set Lengvai (eng. Easily) is the result of long-lasting sonic adventures through experimental digital post-techno, rich scales of frequencies and dynamics, from subtle to intense overladen structures. Lengvai is shaped by luxurious compositional precision, driven under the sway of musical intuition. Colorful hypnotizing beats, intersections of synthetic textures with sharp and powerful melodic flows are organized into polychromic soundscapes. CD2: 60 x one Minute Audio Colours of 2kHz Sound 01:-60: All sonic material is created from pure sound at the frequency of 2kHz, compositionally modulated to rhythmical formations, microsound, thrilling and rippling acoustic substance, diverse 2kHz "sound colours". The colour spectrum becomes a metaphorical equivalent of sound transformation. Sound at 2kHz is the axis of continuing composition, and even when it moves towards white noise and seems to disappear, it is still anyway sounding in THE background. The composition is oriented to a wide scale of listening experiences: from lyrical moods to unbearable noise. The integral composition has a clear and strict structure: audio colours are changing periodically every single minute. In the artist's own words, Flow is an exercice of confrontation, a placing in context between voice and computer, all the idiosyncrasies of bare-naked human expression, altered, expanded and processed beyond its own flesh and blood. It also stages the possibilities and the impossibilities of relationships, or at least tries to pose some questions about the construction of our identity as a permanent conversation with others, through emotions that flow from rational collaborations in this record, with the beautiful and unsettling voice of Filipa Hora and the guitars of Jo?o Hora and Em?dio Buchinho. Its a 'go with the flow', a journey with people, through light and darkness, together in an endless existential dive. "The voice of Filipa Hora is heard saying... I think this is so dangerous, this intimacy, i think... i think you're getting so close, I think I'm gonna have to stop you from getting closer. I think I cannot get so close and then... not be close, I think I'm close... I think I don't want not to be close... APODIO respects the 'free' software tradition because it fully supports Mandriva without upsetting Mandriva's convenient software packages and administrative scripts and because the liveCD generative scripts are always accessible : once you have installed APODIO, you can generate a new liveCD out of your own installation, onto a CD or on a DVD. APODIO is a free project under GNU/GPL licence, that fully complies with the GNU spirit and standards, as it encourages knowledge diffusion and knowledge sharing in the practice of multi-media tools, rather than just replacing an economic dependency with a technical one. APODIO is part of a long term undertaking - not just a one off achievement. INSTALLATION: APODIO can be installed on a Linux partition of at least 4 Gb (ext2, ext3) It does not need to be installed on a hard disk (LiveCD) Its minimal requirements are: a 750 Mhz Pentium type processor 256 Mb of RAM a standard graphic card a 1024 x 768 pixels screen a sound card recognized by Alsa, cf: http://www.alsa-project.org a CD or DVD player a PS or USB mouse a PS or USB keyboard Try the liveCD ! if it works as liveCD, you can safely install it on your hard disk ! Boghossian / St?phane Rives / Matthieu Saladin title: plateformes When starting (1.8)sec.records, I planed on focusing the music on minimal sound art, and electroecustic music. Since starting the label it has taken a life of it's own pulling me increasingly towards something that falls somewhere between improvisational free jazz and the above mentioned genres. I am thankful for this, otherwise I may not have gotten the chance to experience and release 'plateformes'. The trio of Herv? Boghossian, St?phane Rives, and Matthieu Saladin is very much a free improvisational jazz group, but the music they output goes way beyond what you could expect from the instrumentation. Delicate, but with an incredible power pulling, pushing, and then releasing the listener. Not power in noise or volume, but a power that is coming from the players utilizing the physics of there instruments, and the sound they produce. Through techniques of circular breathing, bass clarinet feedback, and guitar feedback you'd be hard pressed to pin any one sound on a particular instrument. I'm very excited about this release. Enjoy this album, and make every effort to catch this trio in performance. -c Cat.#: (1.8)sec005 Edition: 500 Release Date: Mar 15th 2006 Format: CD Total Length: TBA Package Design and layout: Chris Bryan Cover Photo: Taylor Deupree ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ cat# (1.8)sec004 artist: Dawid Szczesny title: Snow Beetroot / Stapes I-III Dawid Szczesny offers up the first in a series of unlimited edition 3" CDR releases with limited hand made packaging. Dawid Szczesny is a sound artist located in Wroclaw, Poland. Dawid's works are mostly created through processing old vinyl LPs, tapes, and field recordings. Dawid's sound is both digital and warm/natural with an underling melodic sensibility. Snow Beetroot includes guitar sounds by Dawid Bargenda, which is worthy of explanation; Duo Bargenda/Szczesny is a suspended-in-time project, recently heard live on Polish tour with September Collective. Snow Beetroot is mostly based on sounds of guitar, played by Dawid Bargenda during a rehearsal in april 2005. None of these sounds were supposed to be used on Bargenda/Szczesny recordings. Snow Beetroot may however, be considered to be a result of this collaboration. Stapes I-III are part of a bigger project. There is lot more Stapes pieces. They are all never-ending loops, created to be played live, with different timing, in different configurations. Each of them might be listened either as a never ending loop or a finished piece itself. The whole idea of using long, apparently simple loops, is to make a listener perceive each sound's repeatability and principle, which is different at every performance, depending - in some way - on accident. THANK YOU! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- framework - phonography/field recording; contextual and decontextualized sound activity presented by patrick mcginley this edition was held together with the second cd compilation of themed untreated field recordings we've received from the small new zealand claudia label, this one called witching hour and themed on nighttime recordings (we heard one track from this by felicity ford a few weeks ago). there are some incredibly beautiful recordings in here, from all over the world, from scandinavian midnight suns to west african crickets to pakistani muezzins. nice stuff. we also heard another untreated recording by malaysian sound artist yeoh yin pin, composition on ground fault by phroq, extracts from a1996 radio mix by dutch digital artist cym, and a number of short tracks by a berlin-based artist we met on a recent trip to germany, sinebag. we finished off this edition with a recording i've been meaning to play since we began broadcasting in 2002, and which was recently brought back to my attention by a mention on the phonography (http://www.phonography.org) mailing list - i've forgotten who is was who made this post, but thank you! i first came across this recording in my university library in 1991, as part of a 4 cd compilation accompanying an ethnomusicology textbook entitled worlds of music: an introduction to the music of the world's peoples. the recording, made by american ethnomusicologist james koetting in 1975, is absolutely mind-boggling: in a post office at the university of ghana countless workers are manually cancelling stamps, presumably for hours on end. to pass the time they have developed an inherent music in their actions; they bring their stamps down onto the envelopes at hand at incomprehensibly complicated intervals to create an incredible and ever-shifting syncopation, all the while whistling, in multipart harmony, parts to an old ghanaian hymn... if you can't track this book down, i believe this recording may be available online somewhere, if you do a bit of hunting - it's well worth it! again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition or introduction submissions. send material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. we are also hoping to have live performances as often as possible, so if you are in or passing through london please get in touch! framework 31 nevill road london n16 8sl uk framework at talk21.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10.03.06 mystified / framework intro thomas park recorded this intro for us on the busy corner of his apartment building www.mystifiedmusic.com p. westbourne / dawn chorus / witching hour / claudia late summer night midnight sun with birds and hums in bergen, norway margot at brickbay.co.nz, http://www.cmr.co.nz cym / extract / triple x radio 100 festival july 1996 / - live mix of records and found sounds made for dutch radio festival http://cym.net yeoh yin pin / waktu subah 212 / - / sudut mp3 release of an untreated recording from the artist's bedroom window during a call to prayer http://www.yat.ch/emacm/sudut lau nau / keskall? I've been hosting an experimental and electronic music radio show for a couple of years now called sigtronica (http://sigtronica.org) on WMBR 88.1FM in Cambridge, MA, USA. I'm on weekly, Wednesday nights from 2300-0000 Eastern Standard Time. Recently I've gotten around to actually making the website functional with archives and playlists, along with the requisite podcast, of course (in reality, a packaging of the weekly archives for those who prefer to listen easily in iTunes or other software). I'm always interested in hearing new experimental and electronic music, so if you have material, regardless of format, you can send/e- mail it to: WMBR c/o Nick Knouf 3 Ames St Cambridge, MA USA nknouf at sigtronica dot org Also, if you're in the Boston area, or simply visiting, and would like to play or chat on the air, drop me a line and we can set something up. Thanks for reading and (hopefully) listening! nick knouf --------------- Slightly ?reserved? in tone tonight, featuring some excellent drone by Kowalsky, Growing, and Charalambides. I found an interesting new artist in Et Ret, went back to my semi-indie roots with Mogwai, and threw in some contemporary classical with Kotche and Lucier (who was recently in the area at a concert of electro-acoustic music; I spoke with him a bit after the show, which was quite a delight). 1. The Ground Fault Recordings mail order catalog is a constantly changing selection currently containing about 800 titles. http://www.spasticcolon.org +++++ smgsap With a hand and ear in a variety of artistic genres, shea M gauer and scott A peterson are busy men. They each spend their minimal free time searching, capturing, processing, manipulating, producing, engineering, and designing sounds for all applications. Their main musical output is the ongoing experimental project smgsap, which presents an even blend of electronic and analog textures, using a variety of sources from field recordings, drones, musical and nonmusical sounds as well as manipulated live audio and instruments. SoundWalk is a one-night-only event that sonically takes over the entire neighborhood of the Arts District in Downtown Long Beach with indoor and outdoor site-specific sound installations. Participants range from local to international sound artists, and each year a catalog and CD compilation are produced for the event. http://www.smgsap.org/ +++++ mem1 is a collaborative venture between cellist Laura Thomas-Merino & laptop artist m. Utilizing a limitless palate of sonic possibilities, mem1's sound is a constant evolution of textures ranging from sparse to dense, ambient to beat-driven tranquil to volatile . . . the listener is submerged in layers of distinctive, complex patterns which provide a focus not on melody or lyricism but an opportunity to listen beyond such structural confines. There is a sense of narrative, but one that unravels organically, almost in slow motion. mem1 has performed with the renowned Penderecki String Quartet and have recently been invited to play at CEAIT 2006 at by media artist Kadet Kuhne. They have also performed as part of the Definiens Project, the LA ArtFest 2005, and SoundWalk 2005 (Long Beach). mem1 curates the quarterly experimental music series CTRL+ALT+REPEAT which takes place in various venues throughout the Los Angeles area. They have presented concerts by the Penderecki String Quartet, Frances-Marie Uitti, David Wessel, and Mark Trayle, among others. http://www.mem1.com From hars7 at hotmail.com Mon Mar 20 17:23:23 2006 From: hars7 at hotmail.com (HarS' Sound Chronicles) Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2006 23:23:23 +0100 Subject: [Microsound-announce] Raudio___ http://raudio.nl/ Message-ID: =============================== ** R A U D I O __ #_7 ** =============================== http://raudio.nl/ Raudio, PARK4DTV's _no beginning, no end_ web stream, has been evolving for about two months now, into a brand new 'one audio main thing' made up out of more than one hundred audio~files contributed by about twenty eight audio~philes of some ten different nationalities :: together - without repetitions - summing up to about four hours and a half of **pure** sound ... _to listen_: http://www.park.nl/digidivi/raudio.pls _to read_1_: http://www.harsmedia.com/SoundBlog/Archief/00576.php _to read_2_: http://www.harsmedia.com/SoundBlog/Archief/00577.php [[ RAUDIO invites proposals for contributions to its next, *eight*, edition ___ mailto: raudio [at] park.nl {_no attachments please_} ]] ================================ ** RAUDIO ? He has worked professionaly in the areas of written contemporary music, industrial music, pop music and experimental performance for the last 15 years. Karkowski has presented his work in more then 30 countries on nearly all continents. He is not interested in traditional definition of what is music, in his opinion all theory and systems of music as a cultural concept have to be destroyed. In his latest work his main concern is on realizing drama with sound electronic and acoustic walls with scores based on architectures of ruins. Intermedia artist Stefanie L. Ku is dedicated to the sculpting, faceting, and polishing of sound and image. Stefanie began her musical career at the tender age of 5 studying the piano on a booster chair. She has studied piano under Betty Oberacker and composition under Jeremy Haladyna and Curtis Roads. After years of dedicating herself to the study and pursuit of music, Stefanie began venturing into intermedia (audio, visual, and tactile information and the way they interact with one another) upon completing a Bachelor's in Music Composition, and have since been performing in various international new media festivals (Sounding Taipei - Taipei, Taiwan, Consciousness Reframed as presented by the Planetary Collegium - Beijing, China, Get It Louder - Shanghai, China) as well as throughout California (CCRMA - Stanford, Woodstockhausen - Santa Cruz, The Luggage Store Series - San Francisco). Stefanie is currently concentrating on transmuting her visions from the dimensionless realm of pure thought into a more accessible language, one that could actually be realized and communicated. Brian O'Reilly works with sound, mixed media assemblage, installation, film, video, and also is a performing cellist and double bass player, focusing on performances of contemporary music and the integration of electronics and extended playing techniques. Current projects include the DVD "Point Line Cloud", a collection of his visual mappings for the music of Curtis Roads, a commission from Z.K.M, (Zentrum fur Kunst und Medientechnologie, Karlsruhe, Germany) to create a series of video works and a live performance collaborating with the Viola player Garth Knox, featuring works by Grisey, Scelsi, Schiarrino, and Knox & O'Reilly. Also currently in preparation is a audio collaboration with Zbigniew Karkowski "the Difficulty of Being" for the Antifrost label, and the DVD "the ledger of fins" utilizing the untapped potentials of the DVD specification for the Sonic Arts Network. The project's objectives are to trace the tangled threads of a fractured narrative, and to interconnect the thin strands that bind sound to moving images. The final output will implement the ability to select from different regions of material both manually, and through involuntary progression by random scripting within the DVD. Thereby constructing a navigable database, in which the viewer will have multiple routes to explore the boundaries of the work. THANK YOU! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- framework - phonography/field recording; contextual and decontextualized sound activity presented by patrick mcginley this edition centered around the two most recent in the brombron series of collaborative residencies, this time between joe colley & jason lescalleet, and howard stelzer & guiseppe ielasi. these two are among the most successful in the series, in my opinion, creating two strong and diverse soundscapes. we also heard several recordings from another compilation (not so new, but new to us!), this one called continental drifts:eastern and middle european movements in 2003, and featuring experimental soundworks from hungary, slovakia and romania, among others. and we heard another recording by malaysian artist yeoh yin pin, examples of the long-running collaboration between dave phillips and r.h.y. yau, and the latest of viv corringham's shadow-walks series, in which she is led on a favorite walk by an invited guest, recording the initial walk and mixing it's sounds with her own recreation of the walk at a later time. our next edition is tomorrow night, and it will be the first of a new series, called framework:afield, which i am happy to announce we will be producing. starting in may, every second week we will air an edition of framework:afield. these editions will be produced by special invited guests from around the world, most of whom have been regular contributors to framework over the years. they are free to use the hour as they wish; some will create documentary programs, or untreated soundscapes, some will create mixes of their favorite records, but all will give us an insight into the varying perspectives on field recording in the greater global environment. tomorrow we will have a single taster program, produced here in london by andrew jacques, who some of you may know for his long time work with these records. andrew has created a single long soundscape from the recorded works of walter marchetti, who, looking back through our archives, i see we have only featured once on the program, and that back in 2002! so i hope you can tune in for our introduction to this new project! again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition or introduction submissions. send material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. we are also hoping to have live performances as often as possible, so if you are in or passing through london please get in touch! . . . . . . . . -- [o_?]<<< Pablo Sanz Almoguera http://www.mediateletipos.net/ http://www.20020.org/ http://h-0.livejournal.com/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Realising the inspirational quality of the call and the fact that this wasn?t just a regional concern, David JC de la Haye requested Newcastle University allowed him to open the call out to a wider audience so that others may voice their concerns through their chosen medium. And, perhaps more importantly, have their voices heard. Since then it has become the focus of attention for many visual and audio artists worldwide. What this endeavour has amounted to is a compilation CD featuring the works of 10 artists, spanning from Lithuania to Austria through the UK to Vancouver. Themes covered take a trajectory that focuses not only on the affects apparent in our surroundings, from the devastation of forestry to the concern over the state of the arctic caps, but also the affects incurred upon ourselves as humans. Sorry for anybody who tried to access the website and was unable to; I'm working on taking measures to add redundancy to help ensure that this doesn't happen again. I devoted the bulk of this show to a new (at least at the station) live piece from Tony Conrad and Faust. Originally from 1995, the piece was entitled ?From The Side Of Man And Womankind? and is off of the album Outside the Dream Syndicate ALIVE. Complete with shredded and bleeding fingers, a brick smashed by a sledgehammer to end the concert, and a near-riot (and no, this is not a Stravinsky reference) by the audience, the sounds are what?s important. Relentless in its intensity, I luckily didn?t receive any calls asking why the same note was played for over ten minutes. Thanks to all of you who have sent links to tracks for me to play; with the show coming up on Wednesday, I hope to feature some of these. Keep them coming! 1. Tomobiki by John Zorn. A nearly-blind schoolgirl, bespectacled. Dreaming through a haze of myopia, she runs into herself, her skin seeing more than her eyes. She is most certainly teetering on the awkward verge of puberty...when everything is lost: split in two. There is no teacher, no correction. Only the immediate reflections of primitive ghosts and autonomic machines seeking the (dis) equilibrium of an unseeable future. ARTIST?S STATEMENT: Djalma Primordial Science is the eight year collaboration of sound artist Jeff Gburek and movement theater artist Ephia, We are one of the few projects in the world that consistently unites the disciplines of experimental movement theater and live electro-acoustic music in order to access an underlying pre-expressive material (minutia) common to both. Body (extended) becomes ear. Through the practice of live improvisation we seek a restoration of the primordial physical body and exploration of its limits; the transmutation of the elements through unstable sound and volatile movement. Accent is placed on receiving from the environment rather than producing. The works of Djalma Primordial Science-- appearing throughout the U.S.A and Europe in theaters, galleries, music venues, derelict buildings, gaping holes in the earth--draw on the particulars of landscape and architecture in order to dismantle and reconfigure the illusory SPACE of "theater" into a real situation of intensely felt experience. We invite you to visit www.djalma.com Djalma Primordial Science is making real art. They have been using a hammer for a flute now for years, and are very skillful at making use of the new language the tools suggested to them. It may take an audience member a while to get used to this new language, but drinking in the syntax fundamentally alters the way you breathe, the way you are This work doesn?t try to make friends; it is exactly what it is, just as a hurricane or an oil spill is what it is. Ephia takes her body apart and puts it back together wrong, so that her hand receives the messages the spleen was supposed to get, so that the eyes are in the soles of the feet, leaving her blind and trembling. We go with her on the journey of this new body across the room, and back again, and across the room, and back again, because the journey is not through space but through states of being. In a way this is journalism, a clear communication of the news from a foreign country. ---Andrew Fearnside, Albuquerque Magazine ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES: Ephia studied dance with Min Tanaka, Kazuo and Yoshito Ohno, Anzu Furukawa, and Akira Kasai. Following her interest in ritual dance, she traveled to study under renowned teachers in Ghana, Java and Bali. She holds a BFA in dance from Columbia University (NYC). She danced in the company of the late Anzu Furukawa in Berlin, appearing in Furukawa?s final production, Goya: La Quinta del Sordo. In 1998, she began her collaboration with musician Jeff Gburek. In the eight years of consistent performance and teaching with Djalma Primordial Science, Ephia?s deeply physical practice has gradually been recast as the UNSOUND BODY. This moniker "UNSOUND BODY" characterizes her concentrations on instability, frailty and magma as movement imperatives and her strong desire to scratch away the veil of illusion from theater, leaving a spare and potent bodily encounter. Her production Null Achtzehn, a requiem for the nameless victims of the WWII Holocaust, has appeared in the theaters of Germany, Italy, and Poland. Djalma Primordial Science was a company in residence at the Revolutions International Theater Festival 2002. They performed the 12-hour-long Naufragio Ballante at THE LAND/ an art-site. Their most recent performance Ci-G?t: six pregnancies for Antonin Artaud has been presented at ODIN Teatret; Les Explorateurs Associ?s Festival; Espace Antonin Artaud--Rodez; and Les Voutes in Paris, as well as at underground venues in San Francisco, New York City, Copenhagen, and Berlin. In July 2005, they held a 13-day workshop entitled Die Entlarvung des K?rpers (Unmasking the Body) at the Mime Centrum Berlin. In addition to their annual seven-day workshop in the desert of New Mexico, INTEGRATING WITH/ DISINTEGRATING INTO THE LAND, they regularly lead workshops for actors, dancers, visual artists and all those interested in unleashing a deep internal expression. Jeff Gburek is a guitarist /electronic music composer/sound sculptor performing widely throughout Western Europe and the USA. He employs extended & prepared guitar techniques, signal processing, open source applications and field recordings to create richly textural music, wherein extreme pianissimo, organic object manipulation and silence contrast energetic swells of electronics. For 8 years he has worked with movement artist Ephia in Djalma Primordial Science, evolving a praxis of body and sound through performance and pedagogy. Other projects include the Berlin-based electro-acoustic trio ZYGOMA with percussionist Michael Vorfeld and sampling by Michael Walz. Appearances with Keith Rowe, Tetuzi Akiyama, Kyle Bruckmann, Pascal Battus, Tatsuya Nakatani, Annette Krebs and Tom Carter (Charalambides), show him crossing many strains of improvised, electro-acoustic and experimental music. His second solo CD from Nur Nicht Nur is forthcoming in 2006. Recordings on his own label Orphan Sound are available through Metamkine in France and Erstwhile in the USA. He has recently been re-orienting his electronic environment at STEIM in Amsterdam, September 2005. Visit www.futurevessel.com/orphansound/ Ana Karen Suarez was born Havana, Cuba. I'm looking for laptop performers for this event, Laptops Unplugged III. Tuesday April 25th, Acadia Theater in Minneapolis. As implied, we've done 2 others in the past. We have about 5 performers right now, and I'd like to at least double that number. Laptops Unplugged III is a performance wherein a number of folks perform on (you guessed it) their laptops, seated throughout the venue, with only the computer's self-contained speakers for amplification-- no external speakers or anything. It'll be about 30 minutes long, and there'll be no program except that everyone come prepared to use audio that'll leave enough space to interact with what everyone else is doing. The date I've booked is Tuesday April 25th. Please let me know as soon as you can if you'd like to play, so that I can list you in the promotional materials. I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have. Thanks!
