He was a music enthusiast, a journalist correspondent for several electronic music magazines such as Trax, Only For DJ?s, Spray and many more. Having a show on Radio Grenouille. As a chairman and founding member of the association A1?unisson he contributed to the appearance of numerous electronic events in Marseilles and elsewhere Yann will be missed. On a more positive note, our new releases have arrived and we are over the moon to welcome aboard 2 great musicians from UK: Same Actor, coming from Brighton. Janek Schaefer out of London. Here abbreviated infos : SAME ACTOR : sharp edges [bleep 30] Same Actor is a name used by Chris Cook for music made predominantly with guitar, sitar and dulcimer, processed into subtle music. "Sharp Edges" uses stringed instruments, microphones and computers to create melodies that grows on the listener, the music that is alive and perfectly demonstrating that digital and analogic go well together. JANEK SCHAEFFER : migration [bleep 31] http://www.audiOh.com/projects/migration.html 'Migration' is the new studio album by one of the most individual composers working in the field of sound art, who has released albums with Fat Cat, Asphodel, Staalplaat, Sirr, Mutek, Rhiz, DSP, [K-raa-K]3, Snail Article, Audiosphere, Alluvial, and audiOh! Recordings. The first half of the journey unwinds slowly and calmly, drifting through night trees and ethereal spaces until radio waves bounce off the stratosphere at first light in the heart of the Amazon. During the second half, sparkling sequences glitter in the sunshine and sounds circle overhead. Dense organ drones from Lourdes cathedral land as embers fly into the sky revealing hovering melodies. The tension unfolds into a progressively intense climax as we depart into the blinding white light of day. REVIEW "A delightful and cathartic experience for the discerning listener. One of Janek's most engaging and accessible albums." THANK YOU! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- framework - phonography/field recording; contextual and decontextualized sound activity presented by patrick mcginley my apologies for the lateness of this playlist - the holiday season has been busy with voyages and visitors, but happily through now to 2006 we begin anew, back to our regularly scheduled programming, as they say. i hope you enjoyed our special guest curator on 16.12 - it was a pleasure to have the chance to hear michael northam's personal retrospective on his 2005. and this, our next show on 23.12, was to be our last program of the year, as the 30.12 was set aside to give our studio engineers a much deserved break. we ended 2005 on a more pensive note, with a very belated nod to the great john watermann, the australian visual and sonic artist who passed away in 2002. our retrospective was inspired by the appearance of the cd epitaph for john, on the dutch korm plastics label - a posthumous collaborative dedication curated by frans de waard and featuring a collection of sound artists and friends who had been influenced by or worked with john over the years. the basis for the work was an unfinished collaboration between frans and john, featuring a collection of john's raw field recordings from toowong cemetary. for their contributions to the project, these sounds were given to asmus tietchens, rlw, and merzbow, and their material was in turn used as the basis for frans' own contribution from his freiband project. for our show i accompanied this material with the sounds that defined john's work for me personally over the years - by no means a comprehensive collection, but the highlights for me from the few cds i managed to find in a time before the proliferation of the internet, either from his own smal nightshift records label, or from other small pioneering record labels such as nd, stille andacht and raum 312. these labels either no longer exist or have no discenable internet presence, hence my lack of contact information for them, but you can find more infomation on the korm plastics label here: http://www.kormplastics.nl, or more information on john watermann here: http://aliasfrequencies.org/watermann. lastly, i will reprint here the obituary, written by frans de waard, which originally appeared in the online review digest vital weekly on 03.04.02: John Watermann 19.2.1935 - 2.4.2002 It's with great sadness that we have to announce the death of John Watermann. He died @ 5:50pm Brisbane time, 2.4.2002, Ward 4B Royal Brisbane Hospital. He died from infection associated with myeloma. John Watermann was one of the truly underground sound and visual artists. In the late eighties his name surfaced out of nowhere, when a double CD was released by the Walter Ulbricht label in Germany. Starting out in Berlin, Germany, where he was born, as a filmmaker and photographer, he found out that he needed soundtracks for his films. He started composing music in the mid-sixties, then moved to Australia in the early seventies. Although he was collecting sound equipment, his first releases did not surface until the late eighties. In the nineties, his music was released on cds by ND, Dark Vinyl, Walter Ulbricht and Raum 312. He also recorded a collaborative work with Merzbow. One of his last big projects was a CD-Rom titled "A Rose Is A Rose," which he released himself and which features both his visual work and his music. Much of Watermann's work incorporated field recordings, which were heavily treated by electronics, resulting in highly rhythmic music. His work also made extensive use of cut-ups. Although in the later part of the nineties he was less actively involved in producing music (mainly due to his illness), his output will not be forgotten. In mid-2000 he wrote me that he was terminally ill, but that he would love to do a sound-project with me in the remaining time. We exchanged environmental recordings and exchanged emails over the practical nature of composing our works. Only a few weeks ago, he wrote me that he was still working on it, despite all the treatments he was getting. In exchanging these emails he came forward as a very practical person, with clear ideas as to what he wanted. I will continue to work my part of this work in order to keep his memory alive. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 23.12.05 (artist / title / album / label) john watermann / toowong cemetary / epitaph for john / korm plastics john watermann / listening to my records / dummyhead / nightshift john watermann / first shudder project / calcutta gas chamber / nd rlw / seeking perfection - somewhere else / epitaph for john / korm plastics john watermann / matter - antimatter / testing the jammer / raum 312 asmus tietchens / jwat 1 / epitaph for john / korm plastics john watermann / stone# 48/7/158/2 / babel #1 / stille andacht asmus tietchens / jwat 4 / epitaph for john / korm plastics john watermann / taste of speed / dummyhead / nightshift john watermann / second shudder project / calcutta gas chamber / nd merzbow / untitled for john / epitaph for john / korm plastics john watermann / traveller's joy tumor / ambiguity / nightshift freiband / threnody / epitaph for john / korm plastics john watermann / third shudder project / calcutta gas chamber / nd john watermann / deus ex machina / dummyhead / nightshift john watermann / stone# 20/11/162/1 / babel #1 / stille andacht john watermann / testing the jammer / testing the jammer / raum 312 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- framework intro submissions: 1) take yourself and an audio recording device to a location of your choice 2) record for AT LEAST 1 minute before you - 3) read the following text: welcome to framework. framework is a show consecrated to field recording, and it's use in composition. field recording, phonography, the art of sound-hunting; open your ears and listen! 4) continue your recording for AT LEAST 2 minutes after you've finish speaking 5) send the recording on any format to the address above, or as an mp3 via email thanks! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I posted the original CFP to the microsound list, so in case you didn't get it there then here it is again: Synoptique, an online journal of film and film studies (www.synoptique.ca), is seeking short written contributions for an upcoming edition on sound in the cinema and beyond. As guest editor I invite you to tell us what would make the world of audio-visual art a better place. We are particularly interested in comments on audio-visual art outside of the cinema. And we are particularly interested in comments from practicing artists. The Visual Music exhibition, currently showing in the US, documents a century's worth of experimentation with the pairing of sound and image. It thus seems like an appropriate time to ask ourselves the following questions: what do we expect from sound/image relationships in the audio-visual arts, and are these expectations being met? Have any of the audio-visual arts, whether cinema, site-specific installation, live performance, etc., truly reached their inherent potential to present sound and image as symbiotic entities? Is symbiosis even the right way to think about the pairing of sound and image in the arts? If you're like me then you have your share of frustrations with the lack of audio-visual balance found in most art based on the co-existence of sound and image. So much of the world's cinema continues to treat sound as a necessary afterthought to the image. Meanwhile, laptop music performers are throwing visuals up on screen with increasing regularity, but only rarely with any real thought about how the seen relates to the heard. And if you're like me, you probably also have your short list of favorites in the audio-visual arts to which you hold everything else up for comparison. Perhaps a film such as "In Absentia" by the Brothers Quay and Karlheinz Stockhausen stands out as a model for audiovisual symbiosis in the cinema. Beyond the borders of the fixed frame, perhaps the collaborations of Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller explore the seams of the audio-visual envelope just waiting for the right time to burst. Here is your chance to weigh in. Tell us what you love, and what you hate, about trends in audio-visual art both past and present. Share with us what you think the pairing of sound and image needs in order to meet the expectations that so many of us have for audio-visual media. We're seeking contributions of 250 - 500 words for a forum that will head-off a special section of the edition dedicated to audio-visual art outside of the cinema. We will publish a selection that reflects the diversity of the works received. Submissions are due by January 15th 2006 and should be directed to: synoptique-sound at soppybagrecords.net Include a bio of 50 to 100 words. Visit the following page for an example of a previous forum we conducted in memory of Susan Sontag: http://www.synoptique.ca/core/en/articles/sontag_index/ We look forward to hearing from you. Varying from experimental-ambient, jazzy house, down tempo, and electronic dub, Heiki Sillaste has released an impressive catalogue of well over 45 synthesizer-based records and made over 150 compilation appearances, since 1987. Heiki began his musical career fronting the internationally acclaimed industrial-tekno group Digital Poodle in the late 80's and early 90's. In 1995, he went on to co-found nice+smooth ultramedia, an independent electronic music label that has produced artist greats such as Roy Davis Jr., Jordan Fields, Teknostep, as well as Heiki's own groups Kinder Atom and Lazer Caps. Upcoming music projects for 2006 include Heiki's debut full-length album under his own name, Heiki, and a new full-length Kinder Atom album on the nice+smooth label. Also planned for the new year is a second collaborative album with UK's ambient pioneer, Rapoon, on Vienna's Klanggallerie label. In addition, Heiki currently produces music and sound design for television advertising campaigns and series, including TSN, Nissan and CSI: Miami. Heiki Sillaste is also an award-winning graphic designer, whose work includes brand identity, book and publication design and design for the web. As resident graphic designer for nice+smooth, Heiki is able to combine his two passions, in beautiful, intelligent packaging for CDs and record covers. Heiki lives in Toronto's west-end with his wife V?ronique and his beautiful, little, 15 month-old daughter, Saskia. minisystem - http://www.noisefactoryrecords.com / http://www.bitrockalumnae.com / http://www.subverted.org Minisystem was living in the UK when he first got seriously into electronic sounds, collecting records compulsively before assembling his own studio. After several false starts he became increasingly dissatisfied with digital synthesis and sampling, but found solace in the warmth and imprecision of outmoded analogue technology. An obsessive collector of vintage equipment, minisystem?s tiny studio is rammed full of modular synthesizers, old keyboards and drum machines. Entrenched in this fuzzy analogue world, minisystem crafts his own elusive brand of electronic music with rudimentary fragments of pop, house, techno and electro. Since he moved back to Toronto in 2003 minisystem has played shows around the city, mostly with the bit_rock alumnae - a collective he co-founded with like-minded individuals aiming to promote local electronic music producers. arc lab - http://www.musicmadebypeople.com / http://www.duotonerecords.com An amalgam of disparate stylistic influences, Arc Lab was initially conceived as a means by which to indulge Medard Fischer's musings on the interplay between structurally-defined space and musical expression. Quickly outgrowing its original mandate, the project has become much more eclectic over the last three years and has led to releases on both Toronto's Music Made By People label and Tokyo's Duotone Records. With a constant emphasis on both melody and sound manipulation, Arc Lab is equal parts complexity and simple emotionality. Meandering melodies are juxtaposed with fractured percussion and grainy, hissing synthesizers are layered over pure sine tones. ether.mann - vague terrain / http://www.serialconsign.com Greg Smith has been involved in promotion, playing, or contextualization of experimental electronic music for a decade. As one of the co-founders of Toronto's clonk crew, he cut his DJ teeth alongside diverse selectors such as Sutekh, Jeff Milligan, DJ Fishead, Task, and Martin Tetrault. Over the years, Greg has oscillated back and forth between DJing/music writing and his design education, in hopes that the two pursuits inform one another. Of late, Greg has been exploring the digital world of traktor and attempting to make sense of his vast music collection through this new tool. I was told it had been the piano in a local bar and was in quite a state of disrepair. over the year or so that I lived in my apartment I grew quite attached to the black spinet with gold stickers spelling "steinwa" on its face. the cassette I found while cleaning out old offices in queens. it was among an abandoned collection of cassettes that someone left behind. I adopted them, giving them new life by layering field recordings and piano over led zeppelin and the police which i found on them. the tape recorder I found in a storeroom at work. no one cared when I took it home and it always sat next to the piano with a cassette ready. one of the cassettes I ended up using had been recorded onto so many times that it became worn out and never played back my recordings the same way. after working with this cassette for a while i had filled it up, even recording over some of my own recordings. at this point I started creating compositions using this material, with ?samples of various lengths looped and played against each other, yielding unexpected results. I came across the concept of graceful degradation while reading a book by richard restak. I realized that the idea fit in very well with the work I was doing. memories are recorded in our brains and surface whenever they are triggered; but each memory is blurred through the process of recollection. This blurring process occurs as memories are recalled and observed in the present, altering the original version. There are many references to this concept within the compositional process and final results, and perhaps more which I haven't discovered. The first layer I encountered was within the cassette. Each time I played a section of the tape the sounds were altered and placed in a new context. The next layer was in the studio working with the sounds, sampling sections of the tape and creating the compositions. as each sample plays its part in the piece, it is altered through its relationship with the sounds of the other samples. Another layer exists while listening, as each person develops an individual relationship with the piece, and the sounds are placed in the context of their experience" (notes by Asher) http://www.con-v.org/cnv%20r07.htm http://www.con-v.org __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Date: Tuesday, January 10, 2006 9:31 AM From: Fabio Roberti ?I'm sending this note out to mention that a good friend and artist Scott Konzelmann (a.k.a. Chop Shop) has suffered a tragic and totally unnecessary disaster due to the malicious negligence of his landlord. Scott has a studio on the upper east side where he built and maintained his speaker sculptures and also worked on recordings and the like. He's been there for about a dozen years or so. The landlord entered his space without his permission and under the excuse of performing some emergency work, proceeded to make a total mess of his work space. But it was quite bad as the workers (or whomever was down there) sprayed water around the space for whatever reason, assuming that his sculptures which were in storage at that time, were just junk! They essentially destroyed nearly two decades of work. Many of the pieces are completely rusted and unsalvageable. Speakers and electronics are totally damaged. This is really inexcusable and Scott has requested that anyone who may have any personal experience with his work to write a brief letter in support so that he can present this at his court hearing. Some of you may know the Chop Shop recordings from their unusual packaging (heavy metal plate with 10", several 3" CD, etc...). But these recordings were often meant to accompany the speaker constructions - now destroyed. Here's what Scott writes: ?One thing that would be of significant help to me now is for everyone to spread the word through their contacts (labels / distributors / curators / radio, etc.) and I request that anyone who ever respected the work of CHOP SHOP to please write a brief testimonial of sorts in support towards my work. I will need all the ammunition possible to represent this loss...I've already started legal action, as the damage was purely malicious --- and intentional.? The second performance of the evening will be the first live collaboration between I8U and Tomas Phillips, in anticipation of their upcoming release Anther on Petite Sono. These salon-style concerts focus mainly on live performances of ambient, noise and experimental music in a comfortable and intimate setting. I8U I8U?s audio art can be qualified as "sound-sculpture". It reveals powerful, opaque and complex sound environments where analog and digital meet. Her web art can be said to follow a parallel path, incorporating both musical and visual elements. I8U's musical path is rather special. From classical music to the blues, it took only one chance meeting with David Kristian to get her involved in electronic music. Her work continues to evolve as technologies enable her to create in new environments. TOMAS PHILLIPS Tomas Phillips has composed electronic and electro-acoustic music since his first solo contribution to the Shadow Tape compilation in 1994. He has since released limited edition cd-r?s under the names Sea Optic, Lisbon and Eto Ami (in collaboration with Dean King). In 2002, Eto Ami created the sound design for choreographer Steve Paxton?s Flat, under the direction of Julee Snyder, in Carborro N.C. 2003 saw the release of Tomas? On Dit on Trente Oiseaux. Selected performances: the Feather Net gallery in Raleigh, N.C. (2002), the Soci?t? Des Arts Technologique in Montreal, Quebec (2003), the Monument National in Montreal to accompany the 2003 production of Sarah Kane?s Crave (with J. Winston Phillips), an Eto Ami playback presentation at the Overgaden Sound Art Festival in Copenhagen (2004), a Technopera, in conjunction with Tobias C. van Veen and the McGill University Opera Company (Montreal, 2004) and the Placard Headphones Festival (Montreal 2005). Current and future projects include collaborative releases with Tobias c. van Veen (If Not, Winter, and/OAR 2005), Chantale Laplante (Chair Bell Floor 2006), i8u (Anther, Petite Sono 2006) and Dean King (? Travers le Bord 2006). CLONAL MACHINA Originating as part of the Real Ambient Movement in San Francisco, Clonal Machina is now based in Montreal. The music started in SF, experimenting with sound, different types of instruments and the creation of a short wave radio/loop machine. His sound is makes extensive use of field recordings and sound bytes. The roots of the music are with the musical philosophies of Brian Eno and John Cage as well as Luigi Russollo and the Futurist movement. A portion of our inventory, i'm estimating maybe 1,000 cds, are ruined but i have not yet determined which ones exactly. this will cause some titles to be reduced in remaining numbers and possibly some being considered "out of print" immediately. the office and studio are currently cleared out and gutted to dry. we are awaiting an insurance estimate and then will begin to rebuild. most music production will be halted, which is very sad, because i am in the middle of working hard on my new solo cd that was supposed to be released on 12k in april... that will now be delayed. i have gotten the main computer up, the internet is obviously working, and once i get the printers up tonight i can begin to fill mail-orders and attempt to get 12k flowing again. the sooner the better for our listeners and my sanity. it has been a very difficult 4 days for my family and myself, directly off of the airplane from the UK tour to a house and town without power for 4 days during sub-freezing temperatures. sleeping in hotels,d then coming home this morning to happily find a house with power only to walk in and experience an indoor torrential rainstorm as we scrambled to save as much as we could. i sincerely apologize for the delays this will cause customers with their orders and we hope to be back up and running smoothly within a few weeks. we're expecting a brand new release from Sebastien Roux on 12k within days and Asmus Tietchen's new Line cd in a couple of weeks. we will try to make sure they get out without too much delay. thank you for your patience during this time. all the best taylor 12k From douglas at benfo.demon.co.uk Thu Jan 19 05:45:04 2006 From: douglas at benfo.demon.co.uk (douglas benford) Date: Thu, 19 Jan 2006 11:45:04 +0100 Subject: [Microsound-announce] London next week: SPRAWL meets the ELECTRONIC LOUNGE. i hope so... so, this edition saw a mix of mostly new material, released and unreleased, and one old favorite: we heard sounds from timothy page and halldor ulfarsson, new field recordings from jeph jerman, a pair of tracks from a recent collaboration between z'ev, kk null and chris watson, a stunning installation document by andre goncalves and kenneth kirschner, and a track from michael prime's cellular radar, all preceded by another framework introduction from adam wimbush. tonight's show is a special edition of framework originally produced in october of last year for the radia network, a collaborative project by a group of independent radio stations around europe. this edition was never broadcast on resonancefm, so it's getting it's airing tonight - it is a collage of my own raw field recordings, taken during travels in the past few years in the u.s., portugal, here in the u.k., france, hungary, germany and estonia. it finished with the premiere of one of my own compositions, again created entirely from raw field recordings, hard edited with no alteration on a portable minidisc recorder. the piece, taking it's name from this very radio show, is titled framework 1. this edition will be repeated on sunday, the 29th of january. for more information on the radia network and their broadcasting schedule have a look here: http://www.radia.fm. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition or introduction submissions. send material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. we are also hoping to have live performances as often as possible, so if you are in or passing through london please get in touch! framework 31 nevill road london n16 8sl uk framework at talk21.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13.01.06 this edition will be rebroadcast sunday, 22.01.06, at 7am gmt (artist / title / album / label) adam wimbush / framework intro recorded in the main square of djemaa el-fna, marakesh ascsoms at yahoo.co.uk timothy page & halldor ulfarsson / composition for seagull & halldorophone / - / - very diverse long swooning duet for a treated homemade instrument and a screaming seagull halldor at kuva.fi jeph jerman / mingus spring / sound 3 / - echoing drips and splutters of a small spring, perhaps in a cave? [deutsche Version unten] CYNETart_06humane :: Call for entries for the CYNETart award 2006 International competition for computer-based art (deadline for submissions March 20, 2006) CYNETart has been showing new trends of cultural developments in the media arts since 1997. The consequences of the prevailing progress of civilisation and the introduction of new information technologies in all fields of social life lead to the disembodiment of perception triggering the examination of a new sensitivity for physical experience and for the perception of one?s own body. The international festival focuses on the changed perception of the body caused by new information technologies. At this, the performance of the new technologies is less important, it is rather about their cultural potential for mediation. This applies f.i. to linkages between existential questions of humankind and their perception. It also applies to a more sensual approach to scientific methods of research and the interconnections between the arts. CYNETart_06humane is devoted to the theme of Body-images ? Image-body :: the bred, contstructed, staged, cultivated, homemade and self-designed human being. CYNETart award 2006 CYNETart 2006 presents three awards. The CYNETart award donated by the Stiftung f?r Kunst & Kultur der Stadtsparkasse Dresden is endowed with 5,000 Euros. The CYNETart award donated by T-Systems Multimedia Solutions is endowed with 5,000 Euros. The sponsorship award of the Saxon Ministry of Science and the Fine Arts is endowed with 10,000 Euros. Categories realtime processing dance and technology :: choreography :: stage design :: performance :: installations :: virtual environments :: computer games The submitted project focuses on the integrated body and its medial ?embodiment? in dance pieces, installations, computer games or performances. The transposition is using suitable interfaces and software (f.i. camera motion sensing-systems), which allow for the realtime linkage of physical movement with auditory/visual processes. new cultures net culture platforms :: concepts :: social movements based on new technologies You may submit strategies or blueprints which understand the net as extended social interaction/cooperation; utopian drafts of societies with the inherent attempt to include them into active social life. How is technological and intellectual knowledge applied to the practice of an electronic culture of awareness? audio processing, visual processing sound design :: Netzmusik :: audio-visual compositions :: vj-performances Digital processing, alteration, linkage or process generation are topical parts of the work. You may submit sound compositions, audio-visual compositions, performance applications (f.i. in the field of vj-ing), or applications with an open structure. graphics, animation, net art screen interaction :: graphics :: animations :: software art :: generative tools :: net art Your work focuses on the presentation on a monitor or a screen. The category subsumes alternative streams of narration such as graphics, video pieces and DVD productions from the fields of internet, design and film, and also software tools which go beyond the daily use of standard menu applications. Transcategorial projects are welcome and can be submitted. However, please choose a category according to the main focus of the project. Artist in residence-grant of the Saxon Ministry of Science and the Fine Arts The jury of CYNETart also suggests the winner of the 2007 grant of the Saxon Ministry of Science and the Fine Arts in cooperation with the City of Dresden. The jury makes two further suggestions, in case an alternative is needed. The grant may be awarded to a younger artists who lives in Germany or to a younger German artist who lives abroad. The participants of the CYNETart competition are included in the group of artists from which the jury chooses the winner of the grant. The grant is designed to allow for the artist to focus fully on his or her work for a certain amount of time. The main interest of the artist should be located in the field of realtime processing. The artist in residence is selected on the basis of his or her method of working and previous projects. The duration of the residency in Dresden is subject to individual arrangement. However, it cannot exceed six months. The artist in residence receives a monthly grant of 1,000 Euros and, if the case may be, additional expenditure. Accommodation can be provided. The possibilities of work are arranged in accordance with Trans-Media-Akademie Hellerau. transNATURALE Please make sure you specify transNATURALE on your application form, if you would like to submit a project for the locations of transNATURALE festival. Find more information on www.transnaturale.de Jury The international expert jury names the award winners and about 10 participants who receive recognitions. The jury suggests the winner of the artist in residence grant of the Saxon Ministry of Science and the Fine Arts, wherefore it suggests a list of three artists, in case an alternative is needed. Presentation The award-winning works are presented at CYNETart_06humane (November 15-19, 2006). Thus, the presentation of the work must be possible at that time. The organiser also aims at presenting all works at the festival which received the recognition of the jury. In addition to that, the organiser selects works for presentation from the submissions. This also applies to the transNATURALE festival which premiered last year in the Lausitz region. The simple title of Songs hides a deep work that Roux states is based in mathematics, symmetry (and assymetry) and organized randomness. Songs is a skillfully and beautifully rendered album of gentle and sometimes not-so-gentle acoustic instruments and melodic granular clouds. Each song is titled simply by the instruments that make it, thus stressing the process involved in their production. From the ubiquitous guitars, piano, and drums to the more exotic metallophone, harp and contrabass, Roux combines these acoustic instruments with digital sounds and makes a point to keep the focus on the instruments themselves, allowing for their subtleties and idiosyncrasies to come to the forefront. Roux?s music is personal and multi-faceted; From warm and drowsy ambient tones to digital fests of errors and erratic rhythms to a more song-structured approach hinting at a distant relative of submereged pop music. His influences include musique concrete, folk songs, and electronic music and his work at IRCAM in Paris wraps his ecclectic tastes into an expertly produced work of digital sound that does not rely on one particular sound or motif but rather highlights a breadth of processes and unique sonic juxtaposititons. artist: ASMUS TIETCHENS title: z-menge cat.no: LINE_025 edition: 500 link to release: www.12k.com/line/line025.htm link to online shop: www.12k.com/shop LINE is proud to present Z-Menge the new installment of the continuing Mengen series from influential German electronic music pioneer Asmus Tietchens. LINE will be releasing the subsequent works in this series. Zeta-Menge means Zeta quantity. "Another approach to ultimate situations, nearly stillness before becoming silent as Samuel Beckett taught us. End Game. Microtones and structures are only the tools. The Night Of Lead revisited..." Asmus Tietchens' first released his unique electronic music in 1980, but created works since the late 1960s. Since then he has produced over 37 full length solo works and more cutting edge recordings on numerous international labels dealing with electronic sound and conctrete music. Some of his over 20 full length collaborationive projects include the ongoing Kontakt der Junglinge with Thomas Koner. Tietchens' focus is the manipulation of found sound in ways suggested by the material itself. German label Die Stadt has begun to reissue his groundbreaking early works on cd in limited edition. His latest critically acclaimed project, a series based strictly on sine tones and white noise is the "Mengen" series released by Ritornell/Mille Plateaux (Alpha-, Beta- and Gamma-Menge). -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... His main interest shifted towards contemporary improvised and composed music. The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements. Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning. Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups. Music for Dance, Cinema, Video and Performance. Has created the record label Creative Sources Recordings in 1999, which mainly concentrates on releasing experimental and electro-acoustic music Hans W.Kock : as composer/performer i am often working with electronic-sound produced by or taken from everyday-tools, like household-electronics, hairdryers, metalwool for cleaning pots and pans or old computers. they are combined in strange ways to reveal some more hidden aspects of their functionality, and strive to transform them into instruments. music-like structures are more or less a side-effect of the process of the search for the proper abuse of these things. on the other hand when working with digital media, i try to explore their boundaries and implicit faults, in order to arrive at interactions which keep a live of their own and react to human input in an unpredictable way. This quartet consists of Tom Carter (Charalambides), Loren Chasse (The Blithe Sons, Thuja, etc), Christine Boepple (Skygreen Leopards Skyband), and Robert Horton (Broken Mask, Infinite Article, etc). Kyrgyz's debut album is 60 minutes of droned-out bliss. With its roots firmly planted in trance-inducing soil, the six songs here stretch their branches toward the sun. When four artists of this caliber come together in a single setting, the expectations are high. There is tension to spare. But Kyrgyz is such a perfect blend of all their talents that it never implodes beneath the pressure. Horton is the hand that guides this mix of heavy, hypnotic drones, a thicket of acoustic scrawl, and even free jazz skronk.. Each sound is carefully chosen and blended together magically. There are equal elements of Charalambides and Jewelled Antler throughout Kyrgyz, but again it is Horton that upsets the balance to create something completely new. In the end, this is nothing short of brilliant. http://www.digitalisindustries.com/catalog.html and why not make it a robert horton 2-for-1 weekend as we're also happy to offer this new gem on foxglove: foxglove104: imperfect masters "strike out" cd-r - $7 ever been hypnotized? taken back to some distant memory as if it were real? well, imperfect masters is straight from the womb. this duo of robert horton and dan plonsey is a disheveled mess of spiderweb drones and floating jazz curses. these compositions are a breath of fresh air from the sea, tingling all your senses like the day you were born. as horton deconstructs plonsey's magical saxophone playing, you are flushed from your perch like a night owl running from dawn. at times it's like being chased through a fantasy land and at others it's like finding nirvana. one thing is for sure, imperfect masters wears the crown. http://www.digitalisindustries.com/catalog4.html soon on digitalis: hush arbors s/t CD reissue thanks and sorry for x-posting, brad -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- YAHOO! He chose to descend into silence early in his life, yet the appeal and influence of his work has persisted. Ten years after Hector Zazou recorded Sahara Blue , urban settings of traslations of Rimbaud's poems, perfomed with the help of John Cale. Now Acustronic Ensemble pays tribute to Rimbaud with just a few well chosen recitations from his writing and a fabric of music that manages to convey something of the allucinatory vividness of his poetry. Proximity is part of the vividness; although there is depth of field to the recording, many sounds are heard in close-up. And although the sounds are various, they often seem to be enfolding around one another in a physical way.Distinctive instrumentation conveys something of the character of the music: Vito M. Laforgia plays electric upright bass, electronics, megaphone and saw, with Giuseppe Mariani on trumpet and laptop,Punck using laptop, objects and field recordings, Luca Sigurta' objects and tapes and Fhievel feedback mixer and flield recordings. Mariani's trumpetsupplies some jazz inflectionsand associations but Free For(m) Rimbaud is not anchored in any particular idiom. In a singlehalf hour movement it glides across the contours of Ambient, avant rock, freely improvised and electroacoustic music, defining it's own territory. Scratchy, twitchy rythms of unidentified origin are multilayered and fringed with electronic gleam, a synthetised scirocco, instrumental gloos, odd banshee wailing.Don't be deterred if french symbolist poetry is not your particular cup of absinthe; this is still a musically intriguing and consistentley diverting release. (Julian Cowley) [ Vital Weekley #510 ]: The Acustronic Ensemble is a spontaneous collaboration of a group of (electronic) musicians who met at the "blog on rimbaud" festival in Rivara, Italy. The disc presents an out-take of the live recording of their performance there. The single 30 minute track is a tour into a world that is defined by it's own rules: musical elements are as easily used as abstract noises, creating a link between worlds normally far apart. And it's exactly this quality that defines the recording and gives it it's power. Okay, I admit, sometimes there are just a little too much effects being used, but more often than not, these five (!) guys know how to get everything rolling the right way. And let's face it, for a spontaneous improvisation that is a very, very good result. I will recommend this disc very strongly to all readers again! + + + Saludos!, mika martini & pueblo nuevo crew. The fluctuating group of participants utilize a wide variety of instruments to make their audio/video compositions, including homemade hardware, customized software applications, analog synthesizers, samplers, and video mixers. Members of the group also experiment with performance techniques such as live sampling, real-time sample manipulation, and audio/video interaction. "As Red as Rubies" is a reconstructed and extended excerpt of an as yet unreleased CD which explores sonifications around the ideas of alchemy. The fundamental concept of alchemy is transformation, whether literal or metaphor, physical or spiritual. 'As Red as Rubies' explores this though a dialog between processed and raw field recordings and other musical material. http://www.con-v.org __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Critic in his won lunchtime (opinions currently too crisp and mirthinducing for the actually-existing music press) ? has complied a CD of music which actually matters. Asked to explain himself, he shot back: ?My finelypressed gang of musical irritants ? a.k.a. the Esemplasm ? take issue with the Neo-Kantian precepts underlying cultural conditioning today. Frankfurter Ahnung actively inkles that the oh-so-knowing circuits of defusion and confusion which degalvinise the frog-leg salad of the contemporary farce are not the limitless gambits of Sir Brain End. Historical materialism will rise again to embalm you in your sleep, running sores of festooned market system!? Ben Watson was born in 1956. In 1968, he discovered social revolution and Finnegans Wake. In 1977, he studied punk rock with poet J.H. Prynne. Today, he broadcasts Late Lunch With Out To Lunch on Resonance 104.4 FM. His publications include Frank Zappa: the Negative Dialectics of Poodle Play; Art, Class & Cleavage; and Derek Bailey & the Story of Free Improvisation. The CD contains music by Lol Coxhill, Derek Bailey, Winifred Atwell, Evil Dick and the Banned Members, T.H.F. Drenching and Kenny Process Team plus a cornucopia of image and text spawned for the mind of Mr Watson himself. Previous Sonic Arts Network CD publications in this critically acclaimed series have been curated by Kenny Goldsmith, a writer and founder of Ubuweb; Nicolas Collins, Chair of the Department of Sound at the Art Institute of Chicago; Irwin Chusid, an author and producer who codified a new musical genre with his first book, Songs in the Key of Z; Tim Steiner, a musician, broadcaster and advocate for the long forgotten ?Fitzgerald?s Manifesto? and the renowned ?pataphysician Dr. Andrew Hugill. The CD can be purchased through the Sonic Arts Network website. Alternatively, by becoming a member of SAN you will receive complimentary issues of the CD series three times a year. Sorry if this is a dupe for anyone: I have been charged with curating an online "gallery" of Canadian microsound/glitch. It was on hold for quite a while, but now it seems to be moving forward. I'd like to put another call for works. Sound works are welcome, but there is also the possibility for video, images and texts (either theoretical or creative in a "glitch" style; I'll leave it to you to figure out what glitch text would be like). There may also be a call for some "glitchy" or otherwise appropriate web design. I'm also looking for more well-established Canadian microsounders to approach about submitting work; feel free to suggest Canadian microsounders whose work would be a welcome addition to this gallery. Please email me *offlist* regarding this.
