From jef at econtact.ca Tue Aug 1 04:51:23 2006 From: jef at econtact.ca (CEC jef chippewa) Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2006 10:51:23 +0200 Subject: [Microsound-announce] Fwd: Re: eContact! 8.4 (electroacoustic techniques) Message-ID: from the CEC | Canadian Electroacoustic Community Dear everybody, In the next issue of eContact! we will be presenting a number of items under the theme Educational Resources. The page titled Electroacoustic Techniques will give concrete examples of specific techniques or approaches to electroacoustic composition for the reader via works found in SONUS, the CEC's online electroacoustic "Jukebox" of sorts. http://econtact.ca | http://sonus.ca Additionally we will list "classic" sources - or at least fairly widely available sources - where these various techniques are used. I'm sure you have mentioned many of these in your lectures! I invite you to contribute any information you feel might be relevant to the WORKS AVAILABLE COMMERCIALLY category. We are looking for either entire pieces, or significant excerpts of pieces, which give clear examples of techniques, processes, compositional approaches (etc...) listed on a WIKI page I have set up for the CEC to gather this sort of information . We are looking for contributions to the WORKS AVAILABLE COMMERCIALLY section which are, or contain: - "textbook examples", or otherwise particularly clear/perceptible examples - long but with many variations or permutations of the technique - preferably at least 30s in length each submitting examples Go to the WIKI page listed above, and click on "edit page", you will be asked to enter the password: pickledeggs The information left in the WIKI will be gathered and formatted in a more efficient manner for use in eContact!; please format your contributions exactly as indicated on the WIKI page. I am a very brutal editor 8^) so keep the descriptive notes within the prescribed length, otherwise I cut cut cut! Any time you have finished entering some information, click on "Save Page". Make sure you do this whenever you are NOT actually editing, otherwise the page becomes "locked", and if I have to forcefully unlock a page, any edits in progress will be lost. (Only one person at a time can edit, so if the page is in use when you attempt to edit, try again a bit later.) categories Clearly ea is not really limited to the techniques listed in the WIKI: feel free to add or elaborate categories as you see fit. Keep in mind that this resource page will be more efficient the more focussed it remains. Examples which are too obscure might be removed from the list, I'm sure you understand that for reasons of space and efficiency we can't list every possible example! deadline eContact! 8.4 Educational Resources will be made public mid-August, so it is imperative that I get this information before Friday August 11. Make sure to "sign" at the bottom of the WIKI page, I will list the contributors in eContact! 8.4. Cheers, many thanks for any contributions you can offer! Enjoy the summer! jef chippewa CEC -- Communaut? ?lectroacoustique canadienne (CEC) Canadian Electroacoustic Community c/o Dept. de Musique, Universit? I won't attempt to describe the music here, but it deserves wide exposure IMHO. In brief, Si submitted this 10 track work to Pete Namlook for consideration to publish on the FAX label. Although Pete decided against picking it up on FAX, he wrote a very positive and encouraging response to Si, who shared it with the rest of us. In light of Pete Namlook's kind words, we asked Si to post a link so that his fellow FAX folk could listen to what Pete had praised. Several of us have now heard the album on line and found it quite impressive. I asked Si if he would mind if I passed the link on to our friends at the Microsound and Ambient lists. I just received his permission, so here you go. I connected to the IDM-making list as well, as the musicians there also overlap these lists. So -- enjoy, and please let us know how what you think. I'm very excited to announce a series of darmstadt "classics of the avant garde" events at the world famous spiegeltent. There are going to be some incredible performances down at the south street seaport (i.e. Diamanda Galas) at this huge performance tent (like the kind marlene dietrich sang in during 30s Berlin according to this week's New Yorker). I was asked to present 6 shows at the Spiegel Tent and am happy to announce that the first one will be this coming monday, august 7th at 10pm featuring EYEWASH. See below for details: http://www.forwardmotiontheater.org/eyewash-speigel EyeWash *Spiegel* Monday, August 7th in the Speigeltent at South Street Seaport 10pm-1am, admission: $10 for tickets log on to http://www.spiegelworld.com/popups/darmstadt.html featured artists include: CHiKA + Zach Layton Adam Kendall + Bradford Reed + Julia Ritter VisualHornHonking + DJ ActivePhaze + Urban Wash Dance FMT + DJ Duane Reade + Aerial Acrobat Michelle Dortignac Peter Shapiro + the Swirl Girls After wowing audiences the world over, the Spiegeltent has finally landed in New York City! A wondrous 1920?s venue of billowing velvet, stained glass, teak, and a thousand mirrors, Spiegeltent resides on the north side of Pier 17 at South Street Seaport (facing the Brooklyn Bridge) behind the Fulton Fish Market. This special EyeWash event is a part of the Darmstadt ?Classics of the Avant Garde? series hosted by Zach Layton. For directions to Spiegeltent click here. about the artists: CHiKA + Zach Layton pair up for the Spiegeltent with a rare performance of ?Time is on My Side?, a remix of Irma Thomas? classic of New Orleans R&B. Zach?s series of resonant echo chamber effects push Irma?s haunting vocals into an abyss of floating harmony while Chika?s visuals evoke a fickering beauty comparable to 18th Century French ornamental design. The trio of Adam Kendall + Bradford Reed + Julia Ritter presents a truly improvisational performance, combining artforms using their ears, eyes and limbs, and avoiding automated or reactive systems. Ritter brings her original choreography, Reed brings his self-made Pencilina (a stringed percussion instrument), and Kendall brings his custom video applications. VisualHornHonking + ActivePhaze + Urban Wash Dance Company present a redux of their art dialogue about creation, convergence, and exploration of the human element in mulitmedia. Focusing on a similiar connection to each medium ?video, dance, and music? through the common thread of journey, illusion, question, and definition. FMT + DJ Duane Reade + Aerial Acrobat Michelle Dortignac collaborate with visuals, sound, and suspension in an ambient mix exploring themes of replication and reproduction in the natural world and the power of life within. Peter Shapiro + the Swirl Girls Miss Maricar and Eeva the Flava unite gravity defiant HoOpALCiOus movement and mixing elements of media to experiment beyond the parameters and elements of your technology and motion. -------- Upcoming Darmstadt @ Spiegel: 8.21 - Gisburg, Moth, Blarvuster 8.28 - ICE Ensemble (international Contemporary Ensemble) 9.11 - David Linton's UNITY GAIN 9.18 - Ignovomous Presents: AV Geeks, Found Footage Festival, LoVid, Mighty Robot AV 9.25 - S.E.M. Using an array of cutting edge software and his trusty Nord Lead, Casais creates a lyrical, but cold and robotic journey through abstraction, culminating in the slippery rhythms of 'milikk'--chunked trash beats cemented by a dizzying lead, endlessly looped into the void. But Omnid doesn't tarry long in this pulsating universe, and soon the listener is left to sift through the ashes during the fragmented refuse of 'Exxon Mobil'. http://www.con-v.org __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Feel free to invade it and find infos, pictures, visit our friends : http://www.myspace.com/stringsofconsciousness This week Strings Of Consciousness is "accelerated"... Getting close to celebrate their 100th issue the American magazine XLR8R is certainly one of the world's leading publication dealing with Electronic Cultures. Thus we are honoured that they selected one of our songs as their favourite for the week, and offer it in their INCITE Online series... You can download the free mp3 from there : http://www.xlr8r.com/downloads.php Besides XLR8R wrote : "Strings of Consciousness sounds something like a cross between a very competent experimental electronic artists and a well-done movie soundtrack. The nine-man musical collective manages to remain in synch through the numerous pianos, guitars, basses, bleeps and clicks that appear throughout their tracks, and create a rhythm together that is haunting, unpredictable, and curiously feel good at the same time." We are enjoying our first internationally distributed release on the BiP_HOp Generation series of compilation. Available in your favourites stores or online from the label... http://www.bip-hop.com v. 8 offers 79 minutes which illustrate perfectly the contemporary alliance of acoustic instruments and digital technologies in music BiP_HOp Generation v. 8 [bleep 32] MURCOF works primarily with orchestral samples, processing the sound sources into new textures and fusing them with microscopic sounds and rhythms. His music is published on Leaf records. TENNIS is the occasional project of Ben Edwards (Benge) and Douglas Benford (si-cut.db). Their music is an amalgam of miniature rhythmic sounds and digitized processing. MITCHELL AKIYAMA is a Montreal based composer, interested in unconventional ways of playing conventional instruments. He has recorded for Sub Rosa, Raster- Noton, Substractif, Staalplaat, and several others... MINAMO is an electro-acoustic quartet from Tokyo, they have released music for 12K, Apestaartje, Cubic... TU M' is a duo from central Italy, who chose their name from Marcel Duchamp's last painting. They have released records on labels such as Dekorder, Phthalo, ERS/Staalplaat, Fallt... STRINGS OF CONSCIOUSNESS work on musical motifs that can evoke at times a stormy, cinematic, or contemporary atmosphere. thanx for your attention philippe -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Then, the attention first gathered around the trio, passed on to Rui Pedro D?maso, one of Frango guitar players who revealed himself in his solo outfit "PCF Moya". On the first recording "Surgeon Surgeon" (2005, Searching Records), circles of improvised guitar sounds are sketched and notes are lost inside maze-like paths or simple spirals. On the second release "Untitled / God Slot EP" (2006, Merzbau ), the atmosphere is denser and shapes are fuzzier, one suspects a more rigorous creation process, the guitar is sparser, the approach is not so direct. Now, on this new "Mouth for Sore Sight", D?maso shows us a different path. The guitar isn't there anymore, now there's only effect pedals and tweaked mikes. To emphasize this difference, the artist name is slightly mutated: "Peacee F Moya". Moved away from the untied notes which were characteristic of his previews works, "Mouth for Sore Sight" divides itself into two long tracks ["Four" and "Three (Exodic)"], two creation places that grow as they absorb small elements along the way. Here the work is all about the progressive adding of elements which sustain some immense spiral stairs made of sound. In the end, all that remains is an almost ghost-like ambience feel: almost, almost whispered slow-motion post-rock, Peacee F Moya is uncompromised freedom in permanent construction. "Lo-Fi isn't an aesthetic statement, it's the logical result of a somewhat disorganized working method", D?maso once said. If disorder is in some way responsible for the creation of these unsuspected droopy textures, then let the world abandon once and for all that yuppie thing about organization.?/ - /Nuno Catarino// http://www.monocromatica.com/netlabel/releases/tube046.htm http://www.monocromatica.com/netlabel Love. -- *'| test tube* - a netlabel testtube at monocromatica.com www.monocromatica.com/netlabel -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... He should know too as he has spent the best part of the last 6 years living in a small outback town in Australia's Northern Territory working in community cultural development with remote indigenous communities. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=133 review by Roger Mills "Clark - Boris Hauf" (review) Clark, a 7 track CD released on Sijis by Boris Hauf, is aesthetically well-placed in Sijis territory. Fragments of techno juxtaposed with modernist contemporary experimentation make it liable to pique the interest of many an electronic music connoisseur. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=132 review by Alex Young "Double Exposure - Winduptoys" (review) After catching a Wind Up Toys live set a few years ago I remember being impressed by Robert & Jeremy's DIY ethic when it came to making all sorts of bleeps & glitches. Everything from flexed, amplified rulers to bird whistles & vocalisations sent through analogue processors, their palette of sound limited only to their imaginations. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=130 review by Roger Mills "Erg" (review) It came packaged in a DVD case, some material placed under the clear outer casing with a sun-like shape printed on it. Just the thing for a bright summer morning. Inside, the CD design echoes the sun symbol, hand printed and accompanied by a sole sheet of paper outlining the artist name and track titles. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=128 review by DJC de la Haye "Every Vein Leads To My Heart" (review) Press play on Mathieu Ruhlmann's ?Every Vein Leads to My Heart' and in a moment's time you'll feel like you're stepping tenuously into a dramatic, cavernous monastery. Dreamily bowed cymbals and metals ring out through encompassing reverbs, their inharmonic frequencies drifting towards each other in vain attempts to find their equal, but instead reconciling their differences to form beating-oscillations. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=127 review by DJC de la Haye "Lacunae Collapse" (review) With one of those slightly irritating goth-esque names that you can never quite remember, Lacunae consist of Kasten Searles, Arson Bright and one A. Peluso, and, intriguingly, they have never actually met! http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=129 review by Mark Francombe "Odd Numbers - The Blessing" (review) From the opening bars of the syncopated 4 bar riff on Equal and Opposite, I'm locked into the beat of the opening track of Odd Numbers, The Blessing 'Live at the Bell, Bath. I'd seen them a couple of times before in Bristol and was curious to hear how their live be-bopped groove would translate onto the home stereo. http://www.furthernoise.org/page.php?ID=136 review by Mike Willox From anagma at arch-project.com Sat Aug 12 13:22:38 2006 From: anagma at arch-project.com (anagma at arch-project.com) Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2006 10:22:38 -0700 Subject: [Microsound-announce] SWO is coming to ISEA2006/ZeroOne San Jose Now!! The PiNG's 7th Ann. w/ mara's torment, dreamSTATE, naw & General Chaos Visuals Hi Everyone - This Thursday is the PiNG's 7th Anniversary Special and we hope you'll come out to celebrate with us and your friends at the Tranzac. Let us know what you think of the club and, if we're all happy (and if the club is happy with the drink sales and such), we'll see if we can negotiate a reasonable price to continue there when the PiNG goes monthly in the fall. As usual, your support means everything to THE AMBiENT PiNG: its past, its present and its future! Has it really been a year since Dread Pirate rik and Sovaak the Scurvy Sock Monkey of mara's torment took to the high seas in search of the mythic Jade Llama? Whoa, time sure does fly! In celebration of their return to THE AMBiENT PiNG stage the pair have put together an eclectic collection of sea shanties and singalongs designed to celebrate both the excitement of their days at sea and the PiNG's Seventh Anniversary. Needless to say rik and Sovaak look forward to sharing a bill with both dreamSTATE and naw, and to reacquainting themselves with some old familiar faces. Yaaaarrrrr!!!! http://www.marastorment.com Electronic sound artists dreamSTATE celebrate the launch of "OM", their 3rd CD and their 1st live performance release, with (what else!) a fresh live performance. "OM" is an ambient soundscape journey recorded live at the OM Festival 2000 in Trudeau Park, Tweed, Ontario and in the spirit of that performance, dreamSTATE will create a free-ranging soundflow to carry the audience off into an alternative mindspace. They're very happy that psychedelic lightlords General Chaos Visuals will be along for the trip! http://www.dreamSTATE.to naw is Neil Wiernik (co-curator of the online digital arts quarterly vagueterrain.net) and his sound is warm, atmospheric and cinematic - firmly grounded in both the rich traditions of dub studio culture and formal contemporary composition. 'The Wire' recently described it as having "the kind of sharpness and clarity usually lost amid the murk and decay of clicks and cuts and digital delays." Upon learning that the Tranzac has a high quality stereo PA, Neil has decided to perform pieces from his sets at Mutek this year - works originally arranged for immersive listening. http://www.phoniq.net Look for the ping things table to get your fix of ambient, electronic, trip hop, dream pop and chill music until the next PiNG - or go online to: http://www.pingthings.com Visit the site now for an extensive "summer heat" sale on over 50 discs. A selection of tracks which reflect their more experimental side, mixed with textures and soundscapes. Music that derives from a skillful combination of specific sounds that surround us daily, with sythesised, filtered, processed, and illusory sounds. The album comes with a video of the track 'retigg' directed by Angeles Casares and Josefina Bietti a.k.a e.S.n.T.m. Next, our multimedia edition [NM006] offers a selection of pieces of indeterminate music based on software (flash archives) created by a sound artist who is recognised across the world for his contributions to open source music. We are referring to Kenneth Kirschner, who developed these pieces in collaboration with the multimedia programmer Craig Swann. Through the use of built-in chance procedures, the piece is both indeterminate in composition (it will be different on each listening), and indefinite in duration (the piece will play continuously for as long as the listener wishes).** Both works can be downloaded for free from our website http://www.naturalmedia.com.ar Espa?ol: La edici?n de audio [NM005] pertenece al d?o Ampec, formado en el a?o 2001 por Alejandro Mosso y Cristi?n Conti en Mendoza, Argentina. I really love the spiegeltent environment. I don't know quite how to describe the somewhat dark and decadent, weimar-era, mirror-laden ambience in that place, but it's really beautiful and completely unlike any venue you've heard contemporary music in. Highly recommended. I hope you can make it! All info, including advanced ticket sales and directions can be found at www.spiegelworld.com. see below for details: Darmstadt presents a premiere series of experimental contemporary music and new media. Darmstadt, "classics of the avant garde", the Brooklyn based contemporary music outfit curated by Zach Layton presents a special series of concerts for the Speigeltent. Internationally acclaimed chamber ensembles play contemporary music by young composers and classic 20th century works by John Cage and Xenakis. Major figures from New York?s leading experimental new media community present live real-time improvisatory electronic audio visual performances. Homemade synthesizers, oddball educational films and psychedelic visuals round out the series. A downtown premiere series sure to be unlike anything you?ve ever seen at the South Street Seaport. Gisberg plays: W.A.L.S.C.H 2 a film noir music theater piece about a hit man who has a contract on himself and who is big fan of Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Gisburg is a singer/ composer from Salzburg, Austria. She has toured around the world as a concert singer for new music theater with Dieter Schnebel and his vocal group: Die Maulwerker. 1985 until 1992 she lived in Berlin where she attended the Berlin University as a guest student for composition and modern music theatre with Prof. Dieter Schnebel and Prof. Witold Szalonek and for visual arts with Eva Maria Sch?n. Settling down in NYC in 1992 She recorded 3 CDs with her own composition on John Zorn?s label Tzadik. She received composition grants from the state of Austria, the City of Vienna and Salzburg, and the CCP grant from American Composers Forum, and the Jerome Foundation. She is a member and assistant conductor for the Chinese Hai-Tien choir with Mrs. Pi-Chu Hsiao and recorded with Gary Lucas Chinese pop music of the 30?s and 50?s for label blue. She also worked as a sound and music editor for film with directors such as Woody Allen, Abigail Child, Ethan Coen, Robert Duvall, Ann Hui, and Rob Marshall. With Phil Painson she founded the experimental trip hop band Douce which released recently their first sound track CD High Life on GP Music. Moth is Sam Hillmer (Zs, Wet Ink) on tenor saxophone, and Ben Gerstein (Matt Maneri, Tony Malaby) on trombone. Sam and Ben have been playing together since 1998. "Their improvisations bring angular modernistic harmonic material to an aesthetic reminiscent of early twentieth century field recordings of eastern european folk music while engaging noise music and free jazz equally." MP3s are available here: Labyrinthine and florid melodies streaming over alien funk counterpoint make the ecstatic music of Blarvuster, the latest brainchild of critically acclaimed bagpiper/composer Matthew Welch. Inspired equally by Celtic lines and South East Asian ensemble textures as well as avant-garde rock and minimalism, Blarvuster's line-up of some of the brightest young stars in the New York experimental scene ardently evoke a seamless hybrid of musical languages that issues forth its own fictional tradition. "The Brooklyn-based composer leaps vast geographical distances, imagining statistically implausible musical melting pots that sound utterly natural...a composer possessed of both rich imagination and the skill to bring his fancies to life." - TimeOut NY www.zachlaytonindustries.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sunday, August 20th meetings III w/ matt davignon, david linton, ben owen, richard garet, sawako & bruce tovsky + video artists shimpei takeda and chika. Bay-area improviser Matt Davignon pays a rare visit to New York City, and this setting pairs him with a diverse group of local improvisers. Know for his prowess with drum machines and processing, coaxing curtains of sound from his boxes, Davignon also co-curates one of the Bay Area's most adventurous music series in one of its most inviting spaces - The Luggage Store Gallery. Joined by Richard Garet, David Linton, Ben Owen, Sawako and Bruce Tovsky, the group will be augmented by video artists Shimpei Takeda and Chika, who will provide two screens of improvisational video. Sound designer Stephan Moore will sculpt the resulting soundscape with his innovative 16-channel hemispheric speaker installation. Matt Davignon is an experimental musician living in Oakland, California. Since 1993, he has developed his own unique style of music, which focuses largely on textures, arrhythmic patterns and musical imperfections. Since 2004, he has been working almost exclusively with a drum machine. Instead of using it as a rhythm device, he plays the pads manually while processing the sounds through an array of effects devices and samplers, improvising music made of organic-sounding textures, hums, gurgles and crackles. Matt is also active in organizing experimental & unusual music performances in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to being responsible for such events as The San Francisco Found Objects Festival, Sound/Shift Oakland and helping to launch the Field Effects series, he's one of the curators for the Luggage Store Gallery New Music Series, the longest continuously running series for experimental and improvised music in San Francisco. www.ribosomemusic.com 8:00 p.m., $10 ISSUE PROJECT ROOM 400 Carroll Street between Bond and Nevins Brooklyn, NY 11231 Telephone: 718-330-0313 || |||| | | |||| | ||| |||||| ||| | ||| || | ||| | | | |||||| | || || ||| September 8 @ 8pm $10 Diapason Gallery Diapason is located at 1026 Avenue of the Americas between 38th and 39th Streets, two blocks south of Bryant Park. This event is a collaboration of improvised dance, theater and music between the experimental music ensemble Incus and the multi-talented performers of Jewell & Company Dance Theatre. An ecotone is the overlap where two worlds meet. In other words, a borderland, a place where anything can happen. Ecotone is a dance theatre work about borders and borderlands. It is a freewheeling improvisational performance using contemporary dance technique and theatrical elements blended with a live electronic and acoustic soundscape. It is a fusion of spontaneous expressions using gestures, sounds, streaming data feeds, props and words, and a bit of audience participation. Incus Arts is an experimental music ensemble founded in 2004 by Kevin Paul, Mike Berry and Rufus Cohen. They make extensive use of computers, electronics and improvisational techniques. "Ecotone" features Cohen on extended guitars, voice and concertina and Paul on sampler, live sampling, voice and percussion. Jewell & Company Dance Theater was founded in 1989 by artistic director Donna Jewell. (english version, please scroll down). + + + english version + + + Hi everyone! First of all, many many thanks to the 61 musicians and sound artists who took part in this spectacular Pueblo Nuevo First Year Anniversary release. I'm glad to announce that this 6-sides monster (66 tracks), is available for absolutely free downloading, enjoying, commenting, criticizing, etc. just by clicking here: http://www.pueblonuevo.cl/primeraniversario.htm We are proud of this huge selection of diverse, worldwide music: artists from Canada to Tierra del Fuego; from Chile to Ukrania, from Spain, UK, and France, who generously offered their work to celebrate with us. We are tied to each and every one of them in many different ways - most of them, friends we love and profoundly admire. That's why this record has become a truly on line party; we started inviting our closest friends/fellow traveller musicians, and, as in any fiesta a la chilena, they invited their friends and so on. That's also the reason why this project became what you see now: a strong statement that music will always make headway - despite our geographical position, our social, political, cultural, and language differences, collaboration among electronic musicians is always new land. That's all for us to say, it's time for you to speak your mind. + + + los musicos / the cast + + + Por orden de aparicion, han colaborado en "Pueblo Nuevo Primer Aniversario", los siguientes talentos / The Cast (in order of appearance): 01. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Blithe Riley beriley at gmail.com 412.443.5758 OH THE WEIGHT OF IT ALL A Rooftop Media Installation Show August 25th & 26th 2006 Rooftop, 210 Cook St. Bushwick, Brooklyn. Exhibition opens at sundown each evening. On August 25th & 26th Ian Epps, Darrin Martin, Shana Moulton, Blithe Riley, Eva Teppe, and JD Walsh present a series of looping video and sound works designed specifically for rooftop installation. Centered on the theme ?gravity,? the works collectively comment on the physical and psychological impact this invisible force has on human navigation and perception. Sound artist Ian Epps premieres his new sound sculpture, Untitled in which balloon-like ?Ashrams? float suspended in the air. Headphones link the listener to the object broadcasting Epps?s new original compositions. The piece is both meditative and metaphorical evoking an illustrative study of an individual?s personal sanctuary, dream-like states of emotional release, and the conflict of being firmly planted to the ground. Darrin Martin?s new work was initially inspired by a book-on-tape version of James Gleick?s Isaac Newton bought at a truck stop. His video Sensorial Principia, ?celebrates the specialization of knowledge through the rubbing of an iconic pinnacle of scientific achievement against the artistic ambivalence of the human body.? Martin?s work questions the access points, as well as the goals of the producers and distributors of human knowledge. Shana Moulton?s video Inside the Mountain Where Everything is Upside-Down presents an interior space that resembles a familiar domestic setting but exhibits physical properties that defy the laws of nature. Household rituals meant to reduce stress trigger a disruption in the space-time continuum, causing objects in the room to have supernatural properties. The bewildered protagonist unsuccessfully attempts to restore natural order to the space until she accepts its irrational logic. Blithe Riley?s site-specific video projection uses looping repetition to highlight the labor of repetitive action. In Wat(h)er Fall, a performer moves through an old twenty-foot metal frame defunct water tower base, in an endless and goalless journey. The journey is broken into time frames, mirrored by the structural frames that dissect the physical object. In Half Asleep, Eva Teppe works with various modes of extremely decelerated motion. By manipulating footage of ?base-jumpers? performing their skydives, the artist dispels all sense of the danger posed by such reckless leaps. The ?base-jumper? is made to look like a diver gliding through a fluid biotope, giving the impression of a sleepwalker, This mood is further heightened by the soundtrack composed by Finnish musician Mika Vainio. In JD Walsh's Weekend, leisurely city dwellers engage in various weekend activities. The electronically removed background emphasizes and exaggerates the mundane tasks that we know as "free time". Actions become unhinged from their environments, gestures freed from governing laws of physics and society. For Oh, the Weight of it All Walsh presents "Weekend (reprise)", a two-channel version, in which these gestures are presented alongside those found in interior spaces, further complicating role of the body in and out of doors. ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES Ian Epps is a Sonic/Visual Artist whose explorations are invested in how an object speaks, utters, and dissolves itself within its given surroundings. His work has been exhibited in the Walker Art Center, Lovebytes Biennial (Sheffield, UK), A.I.R. Gallery (NYC), EYEDRUM (Atlanta, GA), and SIGGRAPH 2004 (Los Angeles, CA). He has performed alongside and in collaboration with Rafael Toral, Andrew Deutsch and Pauline Oliveros, Ogurusu Norihide, among many others. Epps?s recent releases can be found on SoftL Music, Grain of Sound, Powershovel Audio, On;(do), and Seasonal. Darrin Martin?s videos and performances have shown internationally at festivals and museums including the MOMA, the DIA Center for the Arts, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Arts, Pacific Film Archive, and the European Media Art Festival in Germany. His installations have exhibited at venues such as The Kitchen and WRO Media Arts Biennale in Poland. Martin also frequently collaborates with Torsten Zenas Burns building diverse speculative fictions around reimagined educational practices. Their videotapes are distributed by Vtape in Toronto. Shana Moulton?s videos feature her character Cynthia who has psychic adventures with her home d?cor, and whose orthopedic dresses reveal her anxieties and strange inner fantasy worlds. These videos are distributed by Electronic Arts Intermix as part of their emerging artist series. Her work has screened at exhibitions and festivals in Pittsburgh, New York, Toronto, Amsterdam, Paris, the United Kingdom, Germany and Sweden. Moulton attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and just completed a two-year residency at De Ateliers in Amsterdam. As the title implies, this is Conv?s first compilation album. In being a compilation, it features an impressive roster of eleven international artists, representing both genders, each of whom has enriched the contemporary world of electronic/electro-acoustic/experimental/avant-garde music in her/his own distinct way. Also interesting is the fact that none of artists have released anything previously on Conv. The tracks themselves are noteworthy in that they span an eclectic set of styles many of which fall within the boundaries defined by the current Conv discography and others that find Conv exploring some new territory. Finally, because of the album?s artistic diversity and broad scope, ?Con-vpilation? has something to offer both the enthusiast and novice listener alike, and is a must listen for anyone who wants to be conversant about non-traditional contemporary music. For a first listen, find a place free of distractions and absorb the diverse sounds of ?Con-vpilation?, (and, then, of course, be sure to share it with someone else). Immerse yourself in the braying soundscape of Coeval (actually a one-man-project by j.c.blancas) blend field recordings and digital errors into in a noisy cacophony. Enjoy the playful, sensual sounds of Jan Robbe aka Erratic and his friend Lina as they recreate a lighthearted evening of improvision using guitars and an out-dated synthesizer. Prepare yourself for Esther Venrooy?s unsettling piece as she juxtaposes digitally manipulated sounds and sonorous electronics with the odd-intonations found in the voice of science fiction author and Scientology leader L. Ron Hubbard. For something that goes beyond sad, Luca Bergero, otherwise known as Fhievel, takes you into a brooding composition of sorrowful tones and gritty abstraction and, to borrow from some verse provided by the artist, is ?More than past melancholies, like a portrait with no colour.? On the more minimal acoustic side, Margarida Garcia, widely recognized for her double bass work, delivers a jazzy, but restrained, acoustic guitar-based improvision. For an electro-acoustic flavoring, Sabine Vogel?s delivers a lowercase blend of flute, electronics, and manipulated sounds which give way to a chaotic frenzy of dissonant noise. For a slice of powerful ambient drone, Tomas Korber treats the listener to a composition of deeply resonating guitar-based feedback lightly layered with orbiting microtones and frayed bits of noise. Vitor Joaquim offers a unique and poignant selection that he describes in his own words as being ?about intimacy, misunderstanding, loss, and the pain that comes out of it; it?s about time that doesn?t go back; points of no return, and the need of voiding me to stay and go forward, simultaneously. It?s about contradiction and for sure, a very existential feeling. If I can say it, it?s a very me.? For those seeking something dark and raucous, Xabier Erkizia puts forth several minutes of varying degrees of abrasiveness where digitally shredded sounds mix with coarse, low-end noise. And for something refreshingly different, Rameses III presents a beautiful track of avant-garde folk in which soothing acoustic sounds are complemented with organic environmental recordings. liner notes by Larry Johnson http://www.con-v.org __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The festival takes place in Piombino (Italy), from the 28th of August to the 2nd of September and will feature the following artists and activists: - Achim Wollscheid - John Duncan - Kinetix - ESA - (etre) + Fabio Orsi - Domenico Sciajno - Otolab - Nicola Catalano More info at http://www.piombinoexperimenta.it (etre) is the project of Italian sound artist Salvatore Borrelli, "A Post-Fordist Parade in the Strike of Events" being his debut album and the latest release from Baskaru. For going beyond the laptop cliches, that is, as a first listen to "A Post-Fordist Parade in the Strike of Events" clearly demonstrates: vocals, toys, and all kinds of guitars and percussion instruments unceremoniously blend in with field recordings and custom Max/MSP patches. Under a glitch guise, (etre)'s music hides a resolutely personal approach combining melodicism, collage, lyricism, and a sharp sense of digital textures. Ekkehard Ehlers, Tim Hecker and Greg Davis come to mind, not because (etre) sounds like them, but because he sounds as unmistakably unique as them. The 11 tracks on "A Post-Fordist Parade in the Strike of Events" form a loose suite of sorts, like the successive dreams of a restless night. The album also includes an extra track, "Search & Destroy White Calligraphy", accompanied by a remarkable video signed Virgilio Villoresi and Giuseppe Chiesa. (etre) was first active in the fields of sound art installation and experimental performance art. A member of the collective iXem, he has worked with interior decorator Lin-Kuhn Liao and ceramist Fabrizio Quintelmo.
