AC.21 Please join us for the next installment of the 2005 AC Improvised Music Series. These performances feature improvised electroacoustic music in a comfortable, intimate setting, designed to encourage active listening. 6/5/05, 7pm: _Ernst Karel: Ernst Karel plays trumpet and/or analog modular electronics and is based in Chicago. Since abandoning classical trumpet in early adulthood, he has explored ways of expanding the vocabulary of the trumpet both acoustically and electronically. In addition to his work as a performer and composer, he is also involved in creating sound installations and works for radio. (bio: soundfield) _Eric Leonardson: Eric Leonardson is an electroacoustic composer, radio artist, sound designer, instrument inventor and improvisor. Leonardson's interest in creating new sounds for performance and studio composition led to the invention of the Springboard, an electroacoustic percussion instrument made from found objects and recycled materials. (bio: artist's website) Ernst and Eric will play solo sets followed by a duet. Since this is a private residence, you *must* RSVP to attend. Show starts at 7pm. Free, donations welcome. This time John Zorn plays with Yamataka Eye (the brain behind Boredoms) in voice and electronics, with the collaboration of Fred Frith in guitar and Sawai Tajei, converting Yamataka's movements into sound with sensors 02. Synapse is a Japanese project in which take part Haco (bird flutterings, synthesizer, voices and howling pot), Ikue Mori (electronics), Aki Onda (tape player, sampler and electronics) and Uchihashi Kazuhisa (guitar), an album recorded at the beginning of 2003 in New York that has been slightly modified by Haco for its final mix 03. Este trabajo presenta sus ?ltimas miniaturas a la trompeta el?ctrica A recording specially made for Tzadik by the also Japanese trumpet player and electronic musician Toshinori Kondo, an artist working since the 70s (he is already in his 60s), as much solo as in collaboration of some of the most reputed avantgarde musicians in the world, after having not only resided in Japan but also in the United States, and Amsterdam in Europe from approximately one decade. This work presents his last miniatures at the electric trumpet 04. This is a sample from Masami Akita (Merzbow)'s new work, his second for Tzadik, and approximately the fiftieth in his fruitful career from 1978 as an assembler of noise flows (in this case through computer and percussion), a cult figure that we retake in Onda Sonora with the first part of this "Sphere" 05. Ambos formaron Yellow Swans y a su vez el sello Jyrk Collective, cuyas ?ltimas referencias hemos podido escuchar en Onda Sonora After Tzadik we continue in another NYC label, Narnack Records that recently released this "Bring The Neon War Home" by Yellow Swans, a project started 4 years ago in Portland with the collaboration of Pete Swanson and Gabriel Mindel Saloman, the first at the controls of several electronic appliances, rhythm box and tape recorder, apart from voices in the case, and the second at guitar and several electronic sources. Both formed Yellow Swans and the Jyrk Collective label, whose last references have been featured in Onda Sonora 06. Great collaborative work between Darren Tate (who we know for his works in the Ora collective with Colin Potter of NWW, Andrew Chalk of HNAS and Jonathan Coleclough, and more recently for his collaboration with Potter under the Monos moniker) and Paul Bradley (director of the Twenty Hertz label, in which he released several solo works, being also an habitual collaborator of Colin Potter as well as of the Monos project). "Sometime Today" is published by the members of Beequeen Frans of Waard and Freek Kinkelaar, from Holland, through their Plinkity Plonk label. We will reach the end of this week's session after more than 25 minutes of environmental intensity initially composed by Darren Tate from the United Kingdom (using guitar and keyboards among other resources), finally assembled by Paul Bradley adding field recordings taken during a journey to Turkey ______ Nota: Este mensaje no ha sido solicitado, pero hemos considerado que podr?a interesarte. " Okraina was constructed from field recordings made in December 2003 while on tour in Russia and Ukraine. Gas heated kitchen pipes, men sleeping in a train compartment, passing trains, light bulbs, soviet refrigerators, train toilets are the sources. The sounds where minimally mixed and processed, and the stranger sounds are more a result of strategic microphone placement and the lofi microcassette recorder than software". Artists have been asked to write a complete track of music using sounds exclusively derived from a 1 second 440 hz sine wave. A sine wave (often refered to as a test tone) is mathematically the simpliest and purist tone available. The project has been seized upon by artists keen to demoinstrate their versatility and sound design skills. Audiobulb Records now hosts two volumes (with a third volume well under way) of free to download music derived from this project. Audience members, friends, and people walking by will be able to call a number from their cell phone to record sounds from anywhere in the city. These sounds are stored in the HeardHub database, and the performers will use the sounds as raw materials for a composition. The composition will develop based on the sounds that users contribute from their mobile devices. In short, you call the MapHub phone number, record a sound through your phones receiver, and the sound is then worked into the soundscape composition. Users need to register their phone number with MapHub so that they can access the phone system. This can be done at http://www.maphub.org HeardHub2 is the second sonic experiment made possible by the MapHub web application. MapHub researches the introduction of a geographic and historical data sharing application into an urban landscape. MapHub is a peoples' map - a map of an urban geography determined not by traditional methodology but instead by the members who participate in and contribute to the everyday experiences of urban life. MapHub is both a tool and a platform that gives users pen and paper to record their unique and situated perspectives and to deliver that documentation to others. The first HeardHub project is currently installed in Karslruhe, Germany at the ZKM Center for Art and Media. For this project, Carbon Defense League collaborated with artist Greg Baltus to create MapMover. MapMover is a robotic mechanism that uses two computer controlled servo motors to move an LED behind a translucent wall-mounted map of Pittsburgh in two dimensions, playing back sounds from the MapHub HeardHub. The sound playback time occurs relative to the time the sound was recorded during a twenty-four hour day, but is condensed and looped into a period of two hours for the purpose of the exhibit. Artists contributing are Room, 1+0=everything, kataStatik, 2400W, Craque, Area, Time Slips By, Bit Shifter, Puzzle, Johnny Square. Ctrl-N is now available for download at http://www.modsquare.com/music.php. He has been exploring the connection between sound and imagery for the past five years and has contributed tracks to subVariant Recordings, Modsquare, Nishi, and Post Under. YARD Chris Jones, originally from Portland and now Chicago-based, has released tracks under Yard on the Merck, Skam, and Narita labels as well as running his own CDR label, Toast and Jam. With a destrucitive-dancefloor bend, his music nods to Detroit techno, with breaks used out of context, cutup vocals shredded through a meat grinder and cataclysmic basslines. Yard's sound evokes both gritty city life and abstract organic atmospheres, creating the perfect environment for shaking your ass and thumpin' your head. Sascha Neudeck (Vienna, Austria) works in biological science. Making music since childhood, his job made him aware of the microscopic side of sound. This interest led him to work intensively with granular synthesis, alienating samples and sound particles in general. "On "Schattenwind" I mangled my samples several times. For me one of the most precarious decisions is whether I should process a sample further or not. When is it time to stop the treatment? The other important thing is to develop some kind of absorbing structure in my tracks." In the pipeline: Ai Yamamoto, Zac Keillor (Dreamland Recordings), the monthly Label Feature returns... -------------------------------------------- Hi all, Last week's show centred around an adventurous performance by Rod Cooper. The Melbourne-based instrument builder has recently being incorporating some electronics and experimenting with field recordings. It is a nice compliment to the deep tonalities present in his compositions. Rod's debut album, 'Friction', is available from Room 40 (www.room40.org). On tonight's show I will be featuring a recent chat with Jamie Lidell. I had only heard bits and pieces of Jamie's work prior to his performance in Melbourne last year. Suffice to say I was blown away. It was definately one of the highlights of last year and it ranks up there with my best shows of all time. Yes, it's a little more melodic than I usually present on Symbiosis, but Jamie's creations still involve a good dose of electronic experimentation (especially live). Check it out... 'Mulitply' will be one to please the family when they keep turning off your other Warp favourites! In the second hour, Matt Roesner joins me on the phone from Western Australia. He has just started his first East Coast tour and is celebrating the release of his new record on Room 40. 'Alluvial' displays a spectacular growth in Matt's sound. It is full of acoustic elements which are accompanied by beautiful tonal hum. It feels like a conspiracy but it's not! Just all these great releases on Room40. 2005 has been a great year for the Brisbane-based label and it promises to continue with many more great things planned. If all goes well I will be looking at Room40 and the work of Lawrence English in the August label feature. Liquid Architecture 6 is on the horizon. Keep your ears open for coverage over the next few weeks.. As always I am eager to hear more sounds. Keep sending your pieces to the address above and feel free to get in contact... Last June they enabled rooftop viewers to experience a rare celestial event: the passage of Venus between the Sun and the Earth. Unlike countless artworks that attempt to evoke a state of synesthesia, their current project, Camera Lucida, is a continually evolving light sculpture that allows one to see sound moving through space ? right at the delicate horizon where acoustics and optics meet. By means of a phenomenon called sonoluminescence, sound waves are directly converted into light inside a glass chamber filled with gas-infused liquid. After adapting to the absolute darkness surrounding the installation, the viewer/listener gradually perceives the highly detailed shapes and movements of multiple sound sources. Previously, the only way to view sonoluminescence has been in a highly specialized sonochemical laboratory. Now it is in an altogether different environment. Camera Lucida presents the first opportunity for people outside the scientific community to experience this rare phenomenon. Researchers have been probing sonoluminescence since 1934. Though the phenomenon still cannot be fully explained, it is known that the light emanates from imploding microscopic gas bubbles triggered by an acoustic field, which renders sound visible. In this conversion of sound into light, temperatures are produced that are as high as those found on the surface of the Sun. Created over the past three years in collaboration with scientific laboratories in Japan, Germany, Belgium, Russia, the United States, and Belarus, Camera Lucida is among the largest displays of sonoluminescence in the world. The artwork was created by the Russian/American team of Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand, who are part of a new generation of artists linking the legendary frontiers of the techno-scientific west and the spiritual east. Employing ephemeral materials and rejecting the use of fixative and recording media, Domnitch and Gelfand create art works that exist as ever transforming phenomena, offered for observation. Their projects have been exhibited at White Box, New York; The Museum of Dreams, St. Petersburg; Softopia, Japan; Mains d?Oeuvres, Paris; Quartier Ephemere, Montreal; Netmage, Bologna; The Minsk Planetarium, Belarus; Nokia Lab, Moscow. She sang in Alarmist and Malibu Falcon. Inca Ore is Eva alone. When faced the difficulty of finding creative collaborators in a new place, Eva resorted to teaching herself to use a borrowed four track, to play instruments and to arrange. Eva and I have burnt copies of this CD for many folks and have received nothing but enthusiasm.. Christina Carter wrote this about Inca Ore: "magical life, independent and interdependent, called into being with personal messages of dizzying strong-sweet voicescapes...sounds of hills and valleys, blue-green vegetation, mind/body space opened free flowing...seamless explorations of beauty, warmth, goodness, and euphoria." Extinct 3" CDR (edition of 50) We received an anonymous package containing this recording along with an image and a note. "The three pieces in this suite were created by processing live radio coverage of the 2004 presidential election using computer music software. While to some extent, the use of political media materials as source sounds in a work of radical music could be considered pat or outmoded, there was value in this endeavor. The transformative properties of digital signal processing allowed me to uncover the "choral" component inherent in news broadcasts: the anchors form a choir of voices singing in unison, complicit amongst themselves to the authorship whose script they are doomed to read from. The Agency of the newsanchor is limited, or submissive to government and capital, or both. I had concerns that simply processing my radio was not a truly radical platform. That being said, it is an attempt to tear away the fabric of appearances, and some kind of momentary relief was derived from the process. If you don't find this recording sonically or politically persuasive, try using a simple audio processing tool to dissect the media you absorb. You might be more edified by trying the process first-hand." GOD "we are going to make love for a thousand years" CDR (edition of 75, co-released with Rasbluitto) We're always fascinated by GOD. The last time they were in the bay, I went for a walk with Bryan. He said that he wouldn't ever edit any of his recordings. If they weren't solid from start to finish, the didn't deserve to be released. Shortly after that conversation, Bryan asked if we knew any way to put 90 minutes onto a CD.. Since I'm a frequent CDR shopper, I knew that we could pick up 99 minute CDRs here and there.. so... This is that release. One track, 90 minutes long. It's GOD's meticulous electronic improv in it's most eternal form. If you were wondering.... It IS perfect from start to finish. Glacial movements. Future Ears "Free Jazz Copy? noise" CDR (edition of 50) Robert Horton is a REALLY interesting dude. He put out CDRs on Foxy Digitalis and has worked a bit with Lucky Kitchen (FUCK YEAH!).. He leads anti-racist groups... Spends time in a yurt in the middle of nowhere jamming noise and free music of the ages.. He's like the older step-brother or nutty uncle that JYRK has never had (well, I've got an uncle that wanted to give me guns when I was 12 or so, but that's a whole different kind of crazy)... Robert approached me one day with these new recordings he had made that were "too noisy and weird for most labels" and he was looking for a home for it.. I was happy to check it out and was totally baffled straight out the gate... I mean, the cover looks like Albert Ayler, Eddie Iron Maiden and several giant ghost ears are involved in a supernova. The music is something else all together.. There's TONS of processed drumming.. Lots of jazz sounds... Drones.... noise.. smoke.... mirrors....... I dunno man.. Robert bows a freaking BOOT on this thing. Think Sonny Murray in an underwater cave during the 7-year cicada season. All CDRs are $5 ppd and $4 wholesale Update: It's been awhile since the last JYRK/YS update.. We haven't been sleeping for the last 100 years.. Things are incubating.. YS has been SUPER busy planning FOUR upcoming tours and trying to finish up our next studio album... OOOOOOF.. YS has a 7" on Deathbomb Arc (deathbombarc.com) come out a little while ago and we've got an LP reissue of the Against Sleep and Nightmare CDR on Weird Forest (weirdforest.com) coming out soon too.. JYRK's been busy too.. Got a few longer term projects dropping soonish.. One being the first CD release on JYRK. It's a CD by GOD called "Anti-Sex, Anti-Wiretapping." It's being co-released with Gameboy, Little Enjoyer and Rasbluitto. We're also going to have a one-sided 12" edition of the Silentist "Nightengales" EP on Celestial Gang. JYRK is also planning a few new CDR releases before we head out on the road.. Most likely we'll have a CDR reissue of the YS/Skaters split cassette that will be a split release with New Age Tapes. Hopefully a YS/Grey Daturas collab CDR or two as well... Also been talking to some new "acts" like In Flux, Sixxxxxxxes and maybe Gerritt for CDRs..... Please free OPC and Chuck Bettis. Status began in the Spring of 2003 when they designed their own sound sequences and samples and sent the material to each other, waiting and hearing what the other will create out of it. They played this game for nearly 2 years, sending sequences and tracks back and forth until both of them were satisfied with the result. When the minimal 120bpm rhythmic structures of Frank Bretschneider and the austere sonic minimalism of Steinbr?chel get together, a rare piece of atmospheric rythmics is created. Sometimes very melodic, sometimes abstract, sometimes very rhythmic, sometimes nearly pop, and always minimal. Detailed, fragile and full at once Status shows where rhythmic and abstract music can get together, how different sonic worlds combine to create a unique listening experience. Bretschneider is a founder of Germany?s art/music collective Raster-Noton and has released some of the most engaging albums of the decade. Following last year?s Gold (raster/noton) and the stunning Aerial Riverseries (Whatness, 2002), Looping I-VI (And Other Assorted Love Songs) is Bretschneider?s 2nd 12k cd, following Rausch (2000) and appearances on 12k?s critically acclaimed compilations. His music can also be found on such well-known labels as Mille Plateaux, Audio.NL, F?llt, and Bip-Hop. Issued in a numbered edition of 500 cds, Live In Japan, 2004 has been created as a document of Deupree?s and Willits? performances at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM) in Yamaguchi, Japan during their 2004 tour and is being released to support their 2005 tour of Japan. It was first made available in Tokyo on June 18th at the Shibuya Uplink Factory and continuef to be sold throughout the 9-day tour. Now that the tour has concluded the cd is available in 12k's online shop and will be sold at the artists' future live performances. Live In Japan, 2004 features 3 live recordings from YCAM on June 26th, 2004. The first piece is a collaborative improvisational set between the two artists, borrowing textures and styles from each of them, not unlike their previous two critically acclaimed releases Audiosphere 8 (Audiosphere/Sub Rosa, 2003), and Mujo (Plop, 2004). However, new directions are taken into pulsing and repetitive frameworks, more intense than either artist is commonly known for. The second track is Christopher Willits? own performance capturing his signature live, folded guitar work and the third track is a micro/ambient set from Deupree utilizing not only computer-based sounds but live, processed melodica as well as real-time room recording manipulations. The 12k Limited series: A casual series of unique, hand-numbered, limited edition releases with no particular set of rules or guidelines except to be used as an outlet for new ideas, live recordings, conceptual works, or other music to be quietly released beneath the radar. The limited series will only be available in 12k's online shop, at the respective artists' live performances, and at a few select music stores around the world. Now Noble is proud to announce its 10th release: Every > Still Day by Taylor Deupree and Eisi. The sound artist based in New > York, Taylor Deupree, reconstructed the seventh release from the Noble > in 2003, the album titled awaawa by Eisi, a 3-piece band consisting of > vocals, acoustic guitar, trumpet, upright bass, and synthesizers. > > First released in 2003, melodies spinning softly upwards into the > gentle air, the ethereal voice of Mujika Easel melting into serenity, > Eisixs awaawa brought forth a storm of quiet excitement among > listeners. > > New York-based musician Taylor Deupree liked awaawa and requested to > work on the reconstruction project. Deupree owns three labels of his > own: 12k, LINE and Happy, and he has also released albums from major > world labels such as Mille Plateaux, Raster-Norton, and Sub Rosa. > > Eisi sent Deupree individual tracks of the songs on the original > album, live recordings, and unreleased versions. Deupree preserved the > organic quality of the original tracks as he applied his own style of > delicate digital processing, weaving the layers and fragments into the > sonic tapestry that is this album. > > San Francisco musician Christopher Willits added his characteristic > warm guitar-work to the album. > > In his recent work Deupree has revealed glimpses of his more melodic > style of music and interest in japanese pop music. This fresh and > unique electro-acoustic masterpiece is one place where Derupree has > arrived in a musical journey toward acoustic sounds. > > > ------ a text for "Every Still Day" by Taylor Deupree > > > I came in contact with Junji Kubo from noble label through my label, > Happy, in Tokyo during the summer of 2000. Due to my growing interest > in acoustic sound sources I approached Kubo-san with a concept of > recreating awaawa in its entirety using the band's original tracks as > source material for digital manipulation and building them from the > ground up. I had to > simultaneously balance the integrity of eisi's original work with my > own fresh interpretation while loosely adhering to the "rules" of pop > music. Eisi kindly supplied me not only with every individual track > from each song on the original album, but also multiple takes of each > track as well as outtakes that never appeared on the album. The source > material was daunting, but enormously deep. Added to this was a sense > of sadness as I found out that eisi had recently disbanded, so my work > immediately became an elegy of sorts. > > My initial concept for Every Still Day was to take eisi's songs, which > are acoustic and freeform in nature, and to stretch them in two > opposite directions. On one hand, I wanted to add more structure and a > sense of "popness" and on the other blending in my own style of > digital experimentalism. Given the immense possibility of source > material at hand I often chose to keep much of the main > instrumentation intact, keeping a direct reference to the original > songs, not getting distracted by too many choices and technological > possibilities. To this I would add layers and fragments of digitally > processed sounds and build new arrangements. In addition to the > original tracks I created 3 interludes sourced from eisi's live > recordings. These short pieces appear on the album as an intro, an > interlude, and an outro. I also asked San Francisco guitarist > Christopher Willits, a friend, collaborator, and artist on 12k to > supply some guitar parts using his signature folded guitar technique. > His work appears on "Note 1." > > I want to extend my warmest respects to each of the members of eisi > for allowing me complete freedom to manipulate their recordings. As an > artist myself I know how difficult it is to let go of work and allow > someone to change or recontextualize it. For this opportunity I am > deeply grateful. I believe that my work offers a unique interpretation > of "awaawa," approaching it from my own point of view with my own > influences, and in the end it was one of the most exciting and > important projects I've ever had the pleasure to work on. It was my > wish that eisi would equally enjoy hearing their songs in a new light > and perhaps discover elements or sonic relationships that they had not > noticed before. It appears that they did indeed like my work: upon > hearing some of the early demo versions the band decided to get back > together. > > Despite all of the challenges, excitement and creative energy I > experienced during the writing of Every Still Day I still believe that > my work is merely a peek inside eisi, from a stranger's point of view, > and that the beauty of their original songs and performances can never > be improved upon. > > Taylor Deupree > April, 2005 > From roger at eartrumpet.org Tue Jun 28 05:44:29 2005 From: roger at eartrumpet.org (Roger Mills) Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2005 10:44:29 +0100 Subject: [Microsound-announce] Call for participation Message-ID: <95526bfe810310c8ecc5d584105e12c6@eartrumpet.org> Call for participation - Furthernoise.org Net A/V Performances & DVD Release This summer we will be hosting a series of live Visitors Studio net performances with musicians and audio / visual artists from around the world, culminating in a DVD release of the performances in December 05. It is this limit that is often called the "Divine Proportion,? and it and its reciprocal have been widely drawn upon for inspiration and explanation in the natural sciences, architecture, engineering, art and music. Numerous classical and modern composers have works interpreting this natural phenomenon. The music combines improvisation and construction as well as instrumental playing and the use of sparingly applied digital treatments. Flutes and cymbalon are played in rather non-conventional ways more often then not, and, as the title suggests, the overall atmosphere of Ataraxia is quite calm and contemplative while not missing a some intense moments. A detailed description of its genesis is included in the pdf liner notes found on the disc, along with some close-up photos of our instruments. We are both very happy with the outcome of our collaboration, a kind of music neither of us has played before, and that has grown from our working together. We will soon continue to work on our second collaboration project 'Transformer'. Ataraxia, TOC053 is now available. Other news: After the release of Ataraxia there will be no further releases on trente oiseaux until I will have found a new source of income, my financial means not allowing me to further invest in my label. Trente oiseaux will remain active, and continue to distribute its releases in the meantime. Transformer, the next CD by Heribert and me will be released on Heribert's newly founded nvo label ( http://www.novisualobjects.com ) by the end of 2005. (As a side note: one of nvo's first releases will be a work by Steve Roden, who will give a bamboo flute I made for him an important role in its creation - this world has become a small one indeed.) Furthermore, I am still considering the addition of an online download option to trente oiseaux's web shop, but neither the technical, nor the financial aspects of this project have been sufficiently clarified for the time being. +minus will release a CD comprising three re-mixes of +minus material, one by each of the trio's members, on Esquilo Records, Portugal. My colleagues have already completed their contributions, and I will begin to work on mine next week using an excerpt of a live re- cording of our concert in Leeds. I intend to add a couple of tracks to this existing part that will be part improvised and part composed/constructed. I have also agreed to do a re-mix of a solo piece by British guitarist Gary Smith that will constitute my first ever release as a guitarist in spite of my playing the instrument for about 30 years. Last, but not least I'm looking forward to doing a sound installation and solo concert at the Art Museum of Norrk?ping, Sweden on 27. July. Summer is hot and GOTO10 strikes back. Superpureforgirlsandboys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://goto10.org/-/superpureforgirlsandboys.html Back from the artic tundra where they were sent on mission for a few years, some of the goto10 members finally found a way to the reconciliation between two of the oldest secret held in whatsoever new media technics. During 4 days, students will be led into 2 approaches in real-time audio and video processing: patching or coding... They will get kickstart from those two approaches and will learn how make those two worlds communicate for world peace and justice. The last day, all the participants will have time to focus and work together on their own ideas in a complete network orgy. (mmm... let's exchange some data all together ...). --- BANG! PD (aka Pure Data) is a real-time graphical programming environment for audio, video, and graphical processing. It is the third major branch of the family of patcher programming languages known as Max (Max/FTS, ISPW Max, Max/MSP, jMax, etc.) originally developed by Miller Puckette and company at IRCAM. The core of Pd is written and maintained by Miller Puckette and includes the work of many developers, making the whole package very much a community effort. It's hard to describe the possibilities of such an environment as its field of creation is almost infinite. From audio processing, to video, 2D/3D, interactivity, on-line experimentation, streaming and sensors, Pure-Data can handle all of these and provide a rock stable system which is perfect for performances and installations of any kind. TOPICS * white is white: my first patch * basic operations on numbers and messages * simple audio signal processing * building a synth, a matter of triggers * sub-patch vs. abstraction * pure dollars: variables in pd * and more ! PACKET CAKE PDP is short for Pure Data Packet. It is a collection of objects for Pure Data, to be used for processing large chunks of data. It runs on Linux, and most of the objects work on Mac OSX. The subject of this session is mainly processing (live) video, and explains the basic idea behind PDP: how can you make interesting things with very simple building blocks: playing with light in much of the same way as you can do with sound. It all starts with input/output. PDP can be fed live video input and video clips (with/without sound). Once the data is represented as a packet inside PD, it is possible to start manipulating them. The most basic effect is to mix 2 packet streams to one: simple crossfading. Much more things are possible once you start combining several of the basic blocks to build custom video effects. PDP explicitly avoids giving you a 'finished' product. This session will try to give you a deeper understanding about video and filters, and how to apply this to build video effects using PDP. TOPICS * a day in an image packet life * basic i/o: mov, v4l, xv * image format: what are you processing? * colour/intensity processing: saturation, contrast, brightness * spatial filters: convolution, blur, phaseshift * time based filters: delay, motion blur, phaseshift * nonlinear filters and flashy feedback and more ! WE LOVE SUPERCOLLIDER - FOR GIRLS AND BOYS SuperCollider is a programming environment for real-time audio generation. It is one of the finest and most versatile softwares for musical applications of all kinds, such as algorithmic composition, interactive performance and sound installations. In this workshop, primary focus is learning to effectively apply SuperCollider for our own sound synthesis & performance needs. TOPICS * overview: ugens, the synthesis building blocks * synthdefs * using routines and patterns for sequencing * debugging: why it won't work like that, understanding errors. * tips and tricks and more ! PING ME More important than getting specialised into one particular software or technic, is to think "modular" and how to exchange your knowledge with others. Collaboration and network are the keys. During the "ping me" sessions, the students will see how they can combine the simple applications they built during the previous days, into something much bigger they would never have been to achieve by getting stuck into the limitations of one particular sofware or technology. TOPICS * introduction to OSC, netsend/receive * communication between pure data and supercollider * and more ! --- TUESDAY 11h-18h | "we love supercollider - for girls and boys" PART1 | jan-kees van kampen WEDNESDAY 11h-18h | "bang!" | "Packet Cake" PART1 | aymeric mansoux THURSDAY 11h-18h | "we love supercollider - for girls and boys" PART2 | "Packet Cake" PART2 | hannes h??lzl + jan-kees van kampen | tom schouten + aymeric mansoux FRIDAY 11h-18h | "ping me" + NETWORK ORGY !!! | hannes h??lzl + jan-kees van kampen | tom schouten + aymeric mansoux SATURDAY 17h-18h | "so what..."
