(Montevideo, Amsterdam) 2) New + upcoming releases featuring Umatic artists 1) Umatic artists play 5 Days Off / techno? (Montevideo, Amsterdam) Umatic artists Derek Holzer, Sara Kolster and Bas van Koolwijk will play two different live sets for the 5 Days Off Festival's media art program "techno?", at the Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst/Montevideo in Amsterdam. --->July 13, 20:00 Sara Kolster & Derek Holzer perform "resonanCITY" Many sounds and images in our everyday lives slip past our notice simply because they are too small, or because we lack the proper receivers to pick them up. "resonanCITY" is an ongoing project to gather these microscopic sounds and images from various cities, and to amplify and transform them. The goal is to build a new city of sound and visuals inside the old one, and to inspire curiosity and exploration of one?s own environment. Visually, Kolster?s work deconstructs the analog/ digital dichotemy by presenting carefully prepared film positives in a software-manipulated environment. Similarly, Holzer?s realtime digital sound treatments highlight and enhance rather than obscure and distort the phonographic sources he collects. resonanCITY recently won the second prize at the WRO International Media Arts Biennale in Wroclaw, PL. --->July 14, 20:00: Bas van Koolwijk perfoms FDBCK/AV Solo live performance in which Van Koolwijk generates a feedback control circuit between the audio and the video signals, making audio and video become two facets of a self-sustaining data stream. When connected and switched on, FDBCK/AV becomes a cybernetic entity feeding on numerical values. External control is established by injecting extra data into the system to manipulate parameters for the algorithmic interpretation of image>sound and sound>image. The application with which this is done, makes no use of camera or movie input. All sound and image data are generated real-time within the feedback system using digital video basics. WHERE: The Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western Ave., Chicago WHEN: Sunday, July 10, 9:30 pm LINEUP: Castanets, I Heart Lung w/john kannenberg, Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice PRICE: $8 From I Heart Lung's official bio: --- I Heart Lung grew up in California. It is the child of drummer Tom Steck and guitarist Chris Schlarb. They feed it back and beat it freely. An organized/open duet of choke-like intensity and sometimes raging quiet. Solemnity in space and seraphim, I Heart Lung recorded their first album in two hours in what is now an abandoned building. They were supposed to do Africa but were sent north. Their first performance was a headlining affair (that LA Weekly pronounced as, "one of those legendary gigs you only hear about 10 years later") at which the Pink Mountaintops' Stephen McBean bespoke of drummer Steck as a "force of nature." Others agreed. I Heart Lung exists within a textural dimension between drone rock and free jazz. Currently the group is prepared to release a split 12" featuring two new songs from the Castanets on one side and three new tracks from I Heart Lung on the other. The two bands will embark on a US tour along with Wooden Wand & Vanishing Voice beginning in July wherein I Heart Lung will pull double duty as backing band for the Castanets. In addition to having already performed at the SoCalSonic festival of experimental music and having been noted as such by publications such as the Wire and LA Weekly the group will focus their next project on a collaboration with Chicago based musician/label curator John Kannenberg. --- Download I Heart Lung's debut album here: http://www.soundsareactive.com/catalogue.php?album=iheartlung01 -- >> john kannenberg [ http://www.johnkannenberg.com ] [ http://www.stasisfield.com ] From chartier at 3particles.com Tue Jul 5 12:15:06 2005 From: chartier at 3particles.com (richard chartier / LINE) Date: Tue, 5 Jul 2005 12:15:06 -0400 Subject: [Microsound-announce] RICHARD CHARTIER > 07.05 > news/event/release update + new limited edition! Thomas Brinkmann couldn't make it down to the station but I was pleased to be joined by Eric La Casa and Jean Luc Guionnet (France). I had intended to meet them this week for a future Symbiosis recording so it was good fortune really. They were a delight to chat with and their installation at Westspace ('Reflected Waves') opens tonight (Thursday 7th July). Melbourne has been buzzing with the return of Articulating Space last Thursday (next one on 21st July) and the events of Liquid Architecture 6. I have seen some great performances these last few days and I urge people in Melbourne to get down to the festival this week. If you're in one of the other locations that LA6 is stopping at make sure you check it out. It's important that we support the hard work and energy that goes into creating these focused listening and information sharing environments. Congratulations to Nat Bates and the many people who have had a part in Liquid Architecture this year. And much thanks to Anthony Pateras and Robin Fox for starting Articulating Space again! I have been getting a steady stream of work from around the world lately. Hopefully you would have heard some of the new tracks/artists played in the last few weeks. Thanks to all the people sending it through and keep it coming! Until next week, Simon. -------Playlist----------------------------- Show Date: 3/7/05 Guests: 3rd July: Liquid Architecture 6 Program online: www.liquidarchitecture.org.au/la6-program Unfortunately, Thomas Brinkmann couldn't make it in to the Triple R studios. Local artists Scott Sinclair and Clinton Green also dropped by to chat about their new collaboration on Shame File Music, 'With Doors Open'. If you're in Melbourne you can catch them on Tuesday 5th July at Make It Up Club or Scott under his Botborg project on Wednesday at Liquid Architecture. She has two new cds out shortly, a collaboration with Lawrence English on his Room40 label, and a solo release through BUS Gallery in Melbourne. It has been a while since we have seen Will Guthrie (Australia) in town and it will be a pleasure to welcome him to Symbiosis for a chat and live performance. He is now living in France and is back for performances around the country. For show details visit http://www.antboymusic.com/ 24th July: The monthly label feature returns with a look at Taalem Records (France). I will be including comments from the label's owner, Jean-Marc Boucher, over the 2 hours following our phone interview earlier this week. For more info: http://www.taalem.com In the pipeline: Christopher DeLaurenti, Zen Paradox (Steve Law) -------------------------------------------- Hi everyone, Things continue to be busy on Symbiosis. Last week's show was a lot of fun and both the Deadbeat interview and Zac's dj set got a good response. This week sees not 1 but 2 live performances from the Triple R studios... Ai Yamamoto is launching her new solo record (through BUS Gallery's Outer series in Melbourne) at Trades Hall on Saturday 23rd July. Will Guthrie, on the other hand, has been gallavanting all over Australia whilst he returns (albeit briefly) from his new home in France. Laptop ambience meets improvised percussion/found objects & electronics in what is sure to be their beguiling performances. Next week, Taalem Records (France) kicks off the monthly Symbiosis label features again. It's great to return to this series after a 6 month break. Both Triple R and I had relocations late last year and it has taken that long to get things running again. In the coming months I will be looking at Room40, and/OAR, and Sirr amongst others.. And last but not least, I will be away from 21st August until 18th September (inclusive). Radiothon is happening from 19th until 28th August so please show your love and support for Triple R at this time. We are volunteer base, and we are not government funded. We rely on listeners like yourselves to be heard! Check out the website for more details about subscribing and remember to call my gracious fill-ins, Mark or Pat, on 21st & 28th to pledge your support. Until next week, Simon. **Please note the new Brunswick address above** -------Playlist----------------------------- Show Date: 10/7/05 Guests: 10th July: Deadbeat (Canada) talks about his new record on Scape, 'New World Observer', out locally through Inertia. With that motto, The Center for the Study of Pedestrian Culture seeks to promote the act of walking and the creative research and activities that result. The Center's website (http://www.pedestrianculture.com) is an online portal of resources on walking-related cultural and creative activities, with bibliography, links, articles and interviews, and various walking-based creative projects. There is also a section, "Data," where place-based information is available for downloading/remixing/seeding under a Creative Commons license. The website, still a work-in-progress, will grow and develop as we add new participants and contributors. Perhaps a collaborative wiki might emerge down the road. Until then, I will review contributions of projects, bibliographic entries, artist statements, manifestos, reviews, and other content. I would like to invite you to join the Pedestrian Culture listserv (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pedestrianculture) to engage in discussion about walking and related topics: place, landscape studies, mapping, psychogeography, soundwalks, field recording, sound art, acoustic ecology, soundscapes, history of walking, flaneur culture, walking in literature and the arts, locative media, urban studies, New Urbanism, walkable communities, pedestrian safety, street photography, placeblogs, etc. Please visit the links below, and I hope to see you at Pedestrian Culture. The edition will be published in November/December 2005 in a limited run of 1000 editions and will be curated by Craig Robinson, illustrator and creator of www.flipflopflyin.com Lists are never far away from us. As humans, we are obsessed with order. We have an obsessional drive to categorise, sort and list everything. In Art, Literature, Science and Philosophy, lists can be found. Musical examples of listing range from Berio to Billy Joel. We ask for audio (music/found sound/sound art/spoken word), literature, pictures and suggested reference points. The idea may be interpreted in the widest possible sense and can be approached from multiple perspectives - acoustical, visual, philosophical and personal. We encourage a diversity of styles and materials for selection. The CD and its accompanying print materials will be the sixth in a series of numbered, limited edition audio CDs, produced and distributed three times a year, with guest curators and specially commissioned packaging. The Cds are free to members of the Sonic Arts Network (for more information on membership visit www.sonicartsnetwork.org), reaching practitioners and listeners in all corners of the globe, with a limited number of issues released in selected outlets. Previous artists whose work has featured in the CD series have included: Christian Marclay, Yasunao Tone, Francisco L?pez, Antonin Artaud, Jaap Blonk, Lucia Pamela and a host of others. Fitzgerald?s Manifesto Two pairs of ears flapping in the wind, meticulously organised chaos, accidents, childish antics, sharply swinging moods and a totally unpredictable playlist were the key features of the Big Ears radio show broadcast by the Sonic Arts Network on London?s Resonance 104.4 FM between March 2003 and December 2004. Mixing trite and tested formats for presenting a radio show with a host of haphazard influences from Fillipo Marinetti to Britney Spears, the Big Ears presenters regularly both delighted and disgusted their audience as they attempted to broadcast a contemporary show within the somewhat dated principles of Charles Fitzgerald?s legendary 1931 manifesto of broadcasting. Sonic Arts Network is pleased to announce the release of Big Ears ? Fitzgerald?s Manifesto, the 4th edition in its ongoing critically acclaimed tri-annual limited edition series. This publication has been created and curated by the Big Ears anchorman Tim Steiner. The son of an itinerant Jewish chemist, Tim Steiner became fascinated with the history of broadcasting at a young age. Broadcast History magazine lists him in the top 10 broadcast historians of all time and his exhaustive study, The Dawn of the Radio Age, is widely regarded as a definitive text on the subject. He was honoured by the Association of Broadcasting Historians in 1996, receiving the coveted Medal of Honour. He teaches widely and is in constant demand for his award winning lectures and workshops on broadcast historians. The CD publication features work from a highly diverse range of artists including: Otomo Yoshihide, Nam June Paik, Halim El-Dahb, Philip Corner, Leon Theremin, Harry Champion, Sol Hoopi and The Children?s Ensemble of the Moscow Union of Drivers. Big Ears ? Fitzgerald?s Manifesto is sent out free to members of Sonic Arts Network and is available from a limited number of contemporary art gallery bookshops or from www.sonicartsnetwork.org PRESS INFORMATION E: david at sonicartsnetwork.org T: 020 7928 7337 www.sonicartsnetwork.org From blungrec at yahoo.com Thu Jul 21 11:14:45 2005 From: blungrec at yahoo.com (bremsstrahlung recordings) Date: Thu, 21 Jul 2005 08:14:45 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Microsound-announce] net-release: RICK REED - Hidden Voices [For Herman Nitsch] Message-ID: <20050721151445.93240.qmail@web34211.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Rick Reed | Hidden Voices [For Herman Nitsch] TRANS003 Net Release - July 2005 Codecs: mp3, ogg VBR highest quality Physical in 2006 Edition 50 http://www.bremsstrahlung-recordings.org/transradiation/trans003.php TRANS>PARENT RADIATION is honored to present the latest work by Rick Reed. An active sound-artist for the past 20 years Reed has released several LP?s on labels such as Ecstatic Peace, Beta Lactam Ring, Pale Disc Japan, and Elevator Bath. His latest projects have been providing the soundtrack for New York film maker Ken Jacobs?s latest work ?Mountaineer Spinning? and creating a sound installation for Herman Nitsch?s latest gallery exhibit ?The Orgies Mysteries Theater? in Houston Texas. For this release Reed has composed with the sound sources used for the Nitsch installation to create a dynamic and hypnotizing 39-minute sound work. With masterful control of his Moog, World War II era sine-wave generators, short-wave raido, and assorted hardware [no computers here] Reed pulls the listener ever deeper into their Id. When we first listened to this work it functioned as a kind of audio Rorschach test conjuring up images of rutting wild sheep charging forth with ecstatic intensity which then, bruised and exhausted, wedge their way back into their mothers' wombs in an attempt to melt back into what was there before they were. They play mostly in unusual places like forest, apartments, cellars and sometimes on stage with Butoh dancers. They organized free music and butoh festivals in Paris. Everything Liberation Front also collaborated with other international free scene desperado musicians like Jo Jespers (trumpet), Yamauchi Katsura (sax), Oki Itaru,(trumpet), french cryptic group Documents (soon on japanese PSF label).ELF is also a multiform band playing in various configurations then called Terrestrial Liberation Front. ELF plays a broken free instrumental music sometimes very fragile, sometimes harsh, just walking on a narrow path between dream and activism. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Now that we are both back in TO again we've decided to revive the project out of stasis and mutated clonk into not only an event promotion entity, but a new online digital arts journal vagueterrain.net Vague terrain will be a quarterly web-journal showcasing work from various Canadian and International artists, musicians, and writers. Our intent is to stake a unique claim which will sample the focus and methodologies of academic and art journals while commissioning parallel excursions into the sonic realm. Content will consist of a mixture of visual art, audio, and text curated by Neil-Wiernik and Greg Smith. On occasion guest curators will be invited to select content for vague terrain. The first version of vagueterrain.net will be launched in the fall of 2005. As a homage to our origins as one of the first Canadian promotional outfits pushing glitch techno our first issue will be dedicated to an exploration of digital detritus. The digital refuse and artifacts we find ourselves immersed in at the dawn of this new century will serve as both the content and the means of production for a handful of invited artists. Anticipated themes include feedback, decay, (mis)translation, and fragmentation. We will also be promoting a few small events in the coming months in TO go to link for more info about that. www.vagueterrain.net For anybody that wasn't around TO or Montreal when we were promoting as clonk: Over the course of 2000-2003 clonk hosted events in Toronto and Montreal promoting a diverse range of artists including Akufen, Crackhaus, Deadbeat, Jeff Milligan, Monolake, Kero, Kit Clayton, Rechenzenstrum, Scion & Tikiman, Sutekh, and Tomas Jirku as well as countless other significant Canadian producers & DJ's. Until next week, Simon. **Please note the new Brunswick address above** -------Playlist----------------------------- Show Date: 24/7/05 Guests: In the first hour I covered many of the great new releases and net releases that have been released of late. It's nice to see Malaysian label, Xing Wu, bringing out their second release. 'Insight', their acclaimed international compilation, set things off with a bang and it is fitting that they now bring their Malaysian roots to the fore. Many great Australian contributions to the mix too: Jim Denley's transformation of the alto sax, Candlesnuffer's (Dave Brown) new record, and of course the magical sounds of Japanese-Melbourne musician Ai Yamamoto. Most of the second hour was devoted to two longer pieces. The first was a 20 minute recording of Bill Thompson live. Bill recently posted 'from aberdeen' to the phonography.org list - find out more details at http://www.billthompson.org/fromaberdeen.htm. The other longer piece was from Rick Reed, of which I could only play around a 12 minute excerpt (the piece is 30 minutes). It is the third release for net label Trans>parent Radiation ( http://www.bremsstrahlung-recordings.org/transradiation/index.php) - a sub-label of sorts for Josh Russell's Bremsstrahlung Recordings.
