If you like this stuff, please come to one of the shows, enjoy the music and say hello! Chaos Butterfly The electroacoustic duo Chaos Butterfly is Jonathan Segel (violin, guitar, electronics) and Dina Emerson (voice, wineglasses, electronics, etc.). Chaos Butterfly has worked with Camper Van Beethoven (Segel) and the Meredith Monk Ensemble (Emerson), in addition to working with operas, orchestras, and the Cirque du Soleil. Their music encompasses song, soundtrack, storytelling, and mayhem, all created and performed in real time. The instrumentation is a seamless combination of electronic and acoustic sources, including violin, voice, laptop computers, guitar, wine glasses, and various toy samplers. www.magneticmotorworks.com/chaos/ Matt Davignon is an experimental musician living in Oakland, California. Since 1993, he has developed his own unique style of music, which focuses largely on textures, arrhythmic patterns and musical imperfections. Since 2004, he has been working almost exclusively with a drum machine, run through a series of effects and samplers. Drawing from what he's learned in his previous work in sound collage, field recordings, found objects and prepared instruments, he creates an organic array of drones, gurgles and frantic passages. www.ribosomemusic.com Tour info & samples at http://www.ribosomemusic.com/Tour2005.html Friday, December 2 Dunes 1905 NE Martin Luther King Portland, OR 8:00 pm $3-4 sliding scale Chaos Butterfly Matt Davignon Evolutionary Jass Band LUC Saturday, December 3 On the radio 88.7 FM KBVR Corvallis 3:00 PM Chaos Butterfly Matt Davignon Monday, December 5 afternoon On the radio 88.1 FM KWVA Eugene 3/4 PM Monday, December 5 evening Sam Bonds Garage 407 blair blvd Eugene, OR 8:00 pm $6-10 sliding scale (541) 343-2635 Wednesday, December 7 Gallery 412 1412 18th Ave. Seattle, WA 8:00 pm $5-15 sliding (206) 322-1533 8:30: Noah Mickens with Harauko Nishimura (voice/found objects/dance) 9:30ish: Matt Davignon 10:15 ish: Chaos Butterfly Thursday, December 15 Trummerflora presents Other Ideas at Voz Alta 1544 Broaddway @16th (East Village) San Deigo, CA 8:00 pm - $5 at the door www.vozalta.org Matt Davignon Chaos Butterfly Friday, December 16 OPEN Books Music Magazine Art 144 Linden Ave Long Beach, CA 8pm - donation requested Chaos Butterfly Matt Davignon From fbar at footils.org Thu Dec 1 05:23:15 2005 From: fbar at footils.org (Frank Barknecht) Date: Thu, 1 Dec 2005 11:23:15 +0100 Subject: [Microsound-announce] Oh, Schreck! EAST 9th STREET For tickets: http://www.ps122.org or call Theatermania at 212 352 3101 "CONCERT FOR GREENLAND" "THAT CORPSE YOU PLANTED LAST YEAR IN YOUR GARDEN, HAS IT BEGAN TO SPROUT, WILL IT BLOOM THIS YEAR?" Verdensteatret is recognized as one of the leading Norwegian contemporary theatre/performance ensembles, particularly well known for their original and unexpected use of new technology in live art. Verdensteatret is a collective of artists from different art fields, and they have made the performance into a complex polyphonic instrument, a "live animation machine" consisting of mirror projections, robots, motorized objects and more. The performance was hailed by critics as the best performance in Norway 2004. Verdensteatret has been touring Europe for many years but this is the first time they are performing in US. "Concert for Greenland" is thematically based on the company's travel and research around the Northwest-Atlantic islands in 2003: Greenland, Iceland and the Faeroe Islands as well as Norway. It is also an expedition through soundscapes, language and visual transformations, an audio-visual composition where rusty mechanics meet new technology on the backside of a "video-shadow-theatre" on Greenland, an "any media nescessary"-performance where visual art, sound, video, installation, text and theatre blends into a complex composition. From the reviews: "Beautiful, perilous, peculiar. It is likely you have never seen anything like it." (Bergens Tidene) "At times we face an experience that does not deal with the parameters with which we usually categorise contemporary art. "Concert for Greenland" produces such moments, when art ceases to be a catalyst for further critical reflection, and instead turns into an aesthetic experience in its own right. Such an experience goes beyond conceptualization. (....) I will rather consider it a machine of some kind. Through an insanely complicated, yet naively simple system of rails, electro-acoustics, sound samples, video projections and shadow pictures they put the machine in motion. Every picture and every movement is duplicated and cast around in the machine. The machine works for around an hour. I don't think I can tell how it works, I believe this is a work of art that has to be experienced..." (J. R. Moe: www.kunstkritikk.no) Artists involved in creating and performing "Concert for Greenland": Asle Nilsen, Lisbeth J. Thanos Chrysakis is a London living musician of Greek origin, who also writes poetry and does experimental moving image making. His work is well known and has released several pieces through different labels. Now test tube has the honor and delight to release ?Errant Waves?, one of the most fascinating and best structured pieces that this writer has heard in a big while. Inscape 10 (track number 1) is a sudden window to ?Errant Waves?; quickly you are immersed on a strange universe of tiny glitchy sounds and spacey atmospheres. When you already feel familiar and settled with what's going on, distances begin to change and the sounds' source move away, just to come right to your face and then move back again. This song lets you go and grabs you back constantly. Inscape 11 is a beautiful short piece, with accentuated bass frequencies and beautiful chimey sounds. Inscape 12 starts slowly, like a dialogue with an alien that is figuring out what to say as he speaks. Suddenly the track takes an upfront louder mood just to fade away and bring some piano notes superbly mixed with sine waves and hi-pitched micro bells-like sounds. Beautiful. Inscape 13 starts in an amazing way, with a lot of sounds emerging from everywhere while an expanding/compressing sine wave floats in your head. The track reaches a peak when you have all those tiny sounds sparkling right near to your ears just to fade away leaving the background sine alone just to welcome new beautiful elements and textures that fade and so. Beautiful track. Inscape 14 is a short piece with some incidental melodies and beautiful sounds moving around. Inscape 15 starts very sudden; this might be the most emotional piece of the record: there is a sweet melodic low frequency background sound, serving as a soul behind all those glitchy and crystalline sounds. A beautiful emotional journey though abstractness. Inscape 16 starts very slowly, creating tension and expectation, as new elements appear easing the tension, and driving the song into a fascinating path of shy crispness and crystal soundscapes. As the song evolves, a melodic pattern appears, and gives the song a more narrative meaning. Song ends up superbly with some few elements fading away very slowly. This is a very special album, one to be listened as a whole with no pauses, and that is easy since the structures and progressions are so dynamic and emotionally grabbing.? - David Velez http://www.monocromatica.com/netlabel/releases/tube029.htm http://testtube.monocromatica.com Thanks for supporting free music. OUT NOW: pinkie & S.A.D.E. - senza titolo the idea for the project "untitled" was born in september 2005, thinking about the dadaist collage. we played together for one year, looking for a synthesis among structured classical pieces for keyboard, and completely digital metropolitan music - drum'n'bass, minimal. but, since the beginning, noises, voices, field recordings - stolen by the environment or other music elaborated again through the digital editing - were timidly inserted in the weavings of our songs, as intuitions waiting for realization. then our search has been divided into two parts: from a side the absolute exclusion of sounds of synthesis from the creative process, from the other the pursuit of a new method of composition. now, the simile between dadaist collage and digital editing it's almost natural: in both cases it deals with cutting out, glue, elaborate fragments of existing material and despite this the result is an original work, it's not recycling, it's creation of new meanings through a procedure of radical transformation. therefore for us the final work has the same importance than the process to achieve it: the distinction is serious, above all if we thought, for example, that it's not possible to appreciate Schoenberg without knowing that what seems an unorganized whole of notes it's "contrappunto". we were interested in the operation. we have looked for our centre of the sound; the sound is a sphere and so we have decided to overlap many spheres, to crush, to deform them to reach one and only one remarkable and clear central point of the sound. that's our sound, what is remained, or what it's resulted from this transformation. so we have decided to make the jump leaving suddenly away the keyboard: don't even play a note, this has been the first rule. to fill a temporal space of thirty minutes has been the second one. 3 Mp3s - 30'.30" download now @ www.tanderion.org/senzatitolo _ ___ _____ _______ ________ ______________ ??? Conv is proud to present the brand new album of NYC artist John Hudak after his excellents releases on Spekk and and/OAR: Poised somewhere between mechanical music & chamber pieces (for pizzicato cello), these tracks herald the return of the avantgarde to her original locality: the salon, this heart of 'bourgeois' society. The non-communicative qualities of the modernistic literary avantgarde (of which James Joyce & Gertrude Stein in particular may be considered iconographic), we find here in the sublimated form of tranquil and austere monophonies, the unique character of which - each voice, each work, each individual genius - now comes to reside purely in the abstracted prosody of midi-triggered cello samples. This is altogether an undeniably 'post-modern' take on modernism: the unrelentless and self-consuming presence of the original art of which these pieces are derived (the pieces are taken from the voices of Gertrude Stein and James Joyce reading from their works) has now taken a much more diluted and yet more immanent form: a music which having soaked up all the heavy-weighing ambiance of artistic ideals & pretension and, having become satiated, now softly leaks out into the salon as conversation pieces, bringing human life in all its 'ordinariness' (the inverted comma's, being the trade-mark of postmodernity, signifying its own special character) back into the room, and perhaps breathing new life into the idea of the salon. http://www.con-v.org http://www.johnhudak.net regards, m.a. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... ZYGOMA is Jeff Gburek (Gitarre, Elektronik) Michael Vorfeld (Perkussion) Michael Walz (Synthesizer/Sampler) ZYGOMA is an electro-acoustic music trio born from the belly of Berlin in the year 2000 when visiting Amercican guitarist Jeff Gburek discovered partnerships in the percussion work of Michael Vorfeld and the electronics of Michael Walz. Five years of periodic exchange, reflection and technological change brings a merger of these European and American experimental strains, creating an expressive cultural tension between the uses of silence, layering of sounds, isolated vertical events, and mystical fusions of sounds that cannot be easily traced to any one instrument. This makes ZYGOMA a singular event. Vorfeld?s unique sensibility for selection and timing in percussion & self-invented string instruments is met by Gburek?s fluid repertoire of extended guitar techniques & laptop noises and Michael Walz?s subversive use of sampling and electronics. Since Gburek?s return to Berlin with an artistic residency, ZYGOMA promises more focused activity beginning with their latest recordings made at Berlin?s Audiocue Tonlabor and a string of upcoming concert dates in Germany and abroad. www.ausland-berlin.de www.echtzeitmusik.de __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? THANK YOU! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- framework - phonography/field recording; contextual and decontextualized sound activity presented by patrick mcginley a long list of tracks for this edition as we sampled a large chunk of the recent 2cd compilation put out by sirr-ecords, untitled songs, tied to the structural creation of karlheinz stockhausen's seminal piece, gesang der j?nglinge. from the liner notes: 'the works on this cd are not plain homage, nor are they sampled from the original. they are rather a survey of the current state of electronic/electroacoustic that exists half outside the academic music life.' most feature the common elements of voice manipulation and the sounds of interior spaces - we sampled works from many framework regulars, as well as a few new names. we also heard the first of some new works by the composer emmanuel mieville, some tonal creations from tetsu inoue, new works by ubeboet, james wyness and michael trommer, and a framework introduction recorded for us by cedric peyronnet (aka toy.bizarre). this weeks commentary was recording in the abney park cemetery in stoke newington, north london, on what turned out to be a particularly active friday afternoon. baby buggies, tree pruning, nearby building work, and a very active group of winter birds provided the backdrop for my usual set on information - this is a method i plan to be using more often in future, to remove the show entirely from the studio, and place framework where it should be: in the field. again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field recordings, field recording based composition or introduction submissions. send material, released or not, on any format, to the address below. we are also hoping to have live performances as often as possible, so if you are in or passing through london please get in touch! framework 31 nevill road london n16 8sl uk framework at talk21.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 09.12.05 this edition will be rebroadcast this wednesday, 14.12.05, at 10am gmt (artist / title / album / label) cedric peyronnet / framework intro recorded with two mics inside two field-drains; a natural dronescape http://www.ingeos.org emmanuel mieville / herbal dripping / balok night birds / why not ltd plastic bags and dripping water, vinyl scratches and found objects emieville at free.fr, http://www.geocities.com/whynotltd andres goncalves / sinusoids and resonances / untitled songs / sirr.ecords manipulated recordings of a voice-resonated bathroom http://www.ctrl.tk, http://www.sirr-ecords.com michael trommer / speedboat / - / - speedboats crossing georgian bay, ontario, early one hazy summer morning michaeltrommer at gmail.com asmus tietchens / ohne jeden titel / untitled songs / sirr.ecords vocal reworkings attempting to reach a religious ceremony's travesty http://www.tietchens.de, http://www.sirr-ecords.com jgrzinich / synthetic voice / untitled songs / sirr.ecords rattling of metallic resonant spaces http://www.maaheli.ee, http://www.sirr-ecords.com maksim shentelev / untitled song (switchdrop) / untitled songs / sirr.ecords layers of interior recordings and movements - shifting vibration of chaotic movement my-ym at inbox.lv, http://www.sirr-ecords.com ubeboet / 3 / black and red / earlabs dense soundscaping of field recordings, turntable and radio http://www.con-v.org/ube/, http://www.earlabs.org tetsu inoue / remote 6.14 / yolo / din digital tonal reworkings of acoustic and synthesized sound http://music.hyperreal.org/artists/tetsu, http://www.din.org.uk paulo raposo / - / untitled songs / sirr.ecords memories of the silence of an american desert http://www.sirr-ecords.com/pauloraposo, http://www.sirr-ecords.com coeval / track 2 / fin de nada / - bass tones and swirling sound fragments from this mp3 release http://www.coeval.org james wyness / glasshouse / inside voices / faraway manipulated constructions from the edinburgh's botanic gardens http://www.jameswyness.org @c / untitled (int. 11/45) / untitled songs / sirr.ecords space and voice recorded in jaffa and porto http://www.at-c.org, http://www.sirr-ecords.com coeval / 5 / fin de nada / - raw layering of rougher elements, tones and found sound http://www.coeval.org tetsu inoue / particular moments / yolo / din more dense tonal structures and grittier high end scrapings http://music.hyperreal.org/artists/tetsu, http://www.din.org.uk james wyness / cartier-bresson / inside voices / faraway echoing interiors of the dean gallery, edinbugh, during an henri cartier-bresson exhibition http://www.jameswyness.org derek holzer / ? Together this threesome of post-materialist thinkers compose a sinewy orchestra-piece of skin, bones, creaking seats, sharpened fingernails & sharpened nerves. Investigating and penetrating their materials by means of cutting, bowing, scraping, raking, breaking, shattering & digital granulation, they stand in the tradition of the benjaminian (after this most mystic of materialists) science in their salvation from aesthetic denial of these most unlistenable sonic components. With as the grand finale: a voice - in the audience? from the artists? from behind the sound console? - announcing that something has in fact broken free, been brought out into the open in a groan of wonderous & amazed release... http://www.con-v.org http://www.mattin.org __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? He worked at the the Bellini Theatre in Catania (Italy) as assistant director and costume designer. Since 1990 he's engaged in his personal search concerning the visual arts, meanwhile his short studying-stays in U.S. His work takes place in the most recent tendency called ?Medialismo?. His first short film, ?The Fable? (2000), is selected to 18th Bellaria Film Festival, then produced and broadcast by Rai 3. In 2002 he makes his first medium film, ?Astrol?te? (co-direction C.M. Schirinzi) starring film critic enrico ghezzi (20th Torino Film Festival). Some universities such as Brera, Genova and Salerno University have showed his short films with didactic purposes. According to the artist's method, virtual pictures placed next to each other via morphing, are often intended to mix arts up, showing interconnections between aesthetics and real life. next release: Ether Project Ether originates from the collaboration of two characters, Andrea Bracali a.k.a. Cou and Andrea Masi a.k.a. K.Uze. Ether can be described as the result of a long research on contamination aimed to break down every barrier of kind or musical sector: it is thus formed a complete and complex structured mixture aimed to satisfy the listener. Ether's knowledge of music, gained through the instrumental experience and by playing live in a number of Florentine musical projects, binds the art of programming and sampling in order to become "Tree of Porphyry", their first product. In January 2002 they won a competition inside Arezzo Wave Festival, followed by several live performances all around Italy and contributions to radio programs. They also have been included on the "Magic Bus" compilation with the track "Nenuphar", to represent electronic music. Their live sets often feature live visual experiments from excellent italian VJs such as Softly.Kicking from Turin. Along with Softly.Kicking and Submultimedia VJs from Rome they created their first video clip for the track "Don't Taste My Cappuccino" (an extract from the "Tree of Porphyry" album), which was already featured on the "Electrowave_02" compilation released by Ondanomala Records label. The video has also been shown on the VIVA music TV channel. During 2002 they took part to the "Docks De Sud" Festival in Marseille as representatives of italian electronic music. Ether's second video clip, "Robot Zero", was made by R.A.M. from Bologna. This team had already won the "Jury's Special Award" at the 4th edition of "Premio Videoclip Indipendente" during the "Meeting of Independent Labels". "Robot Zero" was chosen by Fandango Productions for the "Videoclipped the Radio Star" competition. In 2003 they released a soundtrack for the documentary "Nunca Mais" dedicated to the Galicia disaster made by the Prestige oil tanker. "Atelier Distribuzioni" produced it. This documentary took part to many events such as "Moltitudini e Solitudini" at the Modern Art Museum of Bolzano and has received the "Special Mention Award" by the jury of Cineambiente Festival 2003 in Turin. In July Ether returned to play live together again along with Softly.Kicking visuals at Arezzo Wave 2003 during the Elettrowave_Labs event. Their new track "Synt Ethic" was released on the "Elettrowave 2003" compilation as a preview of their new upcoming album under Ondanomala Records. December saw the release of their remix of "In My Soul Kingdom" by Casino Royale on Royality Records. During 2003, the two DJs felt the need to expand their music research towards new experiments. Something different to Ether?s minimal atmosphere, so they gave birth to a new project named Tin-Tole-Lata. Under the Tin-Tole-Lata moniker, Cou & K.Uze create a new and more ironic sound with a vintage, electro and more dance oriented flavour. Tin-Tole-Lata self produced a demo that has received excellent reviews and comments and raised the interest of the well-known english record label AI Records, that included their "Hue Song" on the "Station" compilation. During this period a young talented DJ / producer from Florence named Biga join Ether/Tin-Tole-Lata giving a new fresher sound and creativity to the band. Their first EP, entitled "Quasi Quasar" was released in late 2004 on Persistence Bit Records. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Broadcast as part of the 2005 Outer Ear Festival of Sound, Chicago Aqua contains numerous representations of water's relationship to the citizens of Chicago. Public beaches, fountains and waterfalls blend with snippets of dialogue to create an abstracted narrative inhabited by humans, nature, and the manipulation of an element that preoccupied the thoughts of millions of Americans in different ways throughout the year. Blending field recordings and synthesis, Hverdagslyd explores a wide range of moods and textures. Blips, ticks, typewriters and other sound sources are stretched, bent and rearranged into constantly evolving snapshots of sound, with textures becoming more fragile and high-pitched as the pieces progress. San Francisco, CA (November 10, 2005) ? BRINK: Other-Minded Music, a new monthly concert series by Other Minds, presents performances by New York visual/sound artist Bruce Tovsky, and Oakland-based experimental musician Matt Davignon. Tovsky will perform his most recent video/sound piece ETHER, which premiered at 106BLDG30 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in June 2005, and has been playing in international festivals from S?o Paulo to Seoul. The sound from ETHER was also featured recently in the BBC4 radio documentary "Tracking the Lincolnshire Poacher," a provocative and disturbing look at shortwave numbers stations. With evocative sound and visual elements, ETHER aims to create an immersive environment of data decay. Images crackle and distort, merging in and out of video noise. The hiss and hum of sound thousands of miles away fills the room; snatches of music and voices decompose into static. In a darkened room, the video diptych is projected on a flat white wall as the only illumination. Bruce Tovsky earned his MFA degree in Multimedia (Film, Video, Sound, Performance and Installation Art) from Rutgers University in 1979. He began showing video across the USA, Europe, and Japan in the early 1980's, and his work is in the collections of The Kitchen and The New York Library Donnell Library Center. He embarked on a diverse career as an audio engineer/producer (Liquid Liquid, Lydia Lunch, Karen Finley, Foetus) and video editor/designer of commercials and music videos. For the past several years he has been creating live video and sound improvisations, often in collaboration with sound artist John Hudak, in a variety of spaces around New York City, including Diapason, Experimental Intermedia, Issue Project Room, and his own installation space 106BLDG30 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. In the summer of 2003 Tovsky performed "for the time being" with Hudak at Roulette's Festival of Mixology at The Performing Garage. This performance was released in October 2004 on Jason Kahn's CUT label, and was reviewed in the February 2005 issue of The Wire. In October 2003 Tovsky assembled a group of improvisors--Beo Morales, David Linton, Michael Schumacher, and Brooks Williams?to perform a piece for the R?seaunances festival at Ircam in Paris. Since 1993, Matt Davignon has developed a unique style of music which focuses on textures, arrhythmic patterns and musical imperfections. Combining acoustic and electronic elements, he attempts to create dynamic, biological music from seemingly limited source material. Since 2004--after spending time focusing individually on bass guitar, live sound collage, consumer-grade electronics, prepared acoustic guitar, real-time sampling/looping, experimental turntablism, and field recording--he has been working almost exclusively with a drum machine. Rather than using it as a rhythm device, he plays the pads manually while processing the sounds through an array of effects devices and samplers, improvising music composed of organic-sounding textures, hums, gurgles and crackles. On some occasions he can still be seen playing turntable, prepared guitar, cassette tape recorders, looping devices, or an assortment of household objects and toy instruments. Davignon is also active in organizing experimental and unusual music performances in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to being responsible for such events as The San Francisco Found Objects Festival and Sound/Shift Oakland, and helping to launch the Field Effects series, he is one of the curators for the Luggage Store Gallery New Music Series. In addition, Tovsky and Davignon will perform two improvisational pieces together, one initiated by each artist. Both will draw on recently accumulated materials, and neither artist will know before the performance what the other has at hand. Tovsky will also incorporate recent video work that he has assembled for this event. Launched on April 27, 2005, BRINK: Other-Minded Music is a monthly concert series providing an intimate setting for performances by local, national, and international musicians and composers, with a focus on music experimentation. Held at Hemlock Tavern?s recently renovated, 100-person capacity performance space near downtown San Francisco, the series reflects Other Minds? commitment to the world community of composers and sound artists, and presents a new opportunity for developing ?other-minded? artists, as well as artists seeking a more intimate forum to congregate and perform their works. Curated by Bernard Francis Kyle and David Katznelson, along with guest curators, the series runs the last Wednesday of every month at 9:30 p.m. From chartier at 3particles.com Tue Dec 27 17:46:49 2005 From: chartier at 3particles.com (richard chartier / LINE) Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2005 17:46:49 -0500 Subject: [Microsound-announce] 12k/LINE QWARTZ AWARDS nominees: last few days of voting! I am very excited about these CA performances, each a unique situation with a brilliant collaborator. I hope those of you in the area can attend. FALL/WINTER 2005 DECEMBER \ SAN FRANCISCO 12/28 @ The Hemlock Tavern 9pm Part of the "Brink" series presented by Other Minds and curated by Bernard Kyle. Solo and duo improvisations with Matt Davignon. Matt's website: http://www.ribosomemusic.com/ Matt Davignon is an experimental musician living in Oakland, California. Since 1993, he has developed his own unique style of music, which focuses largely on textures, arrhythmic patterns and musical imperfections. Currently, he works almost exclusively with a drum machine. Instead of using it as a rhythm device, he plays the pads manually while processing the sounds through an array of effects devices and samplers, improvising music made of organic-sounding textures, hums, gurgles and crackles. 12/29 @ The Luggage Store Gallery 9pm Duo improvisations with Dominic Cramp. Dominic's website: http://www.snurp.net Dominic Cramp is a founding member of the outwardly thinking power trio Modular Set and co-founder of the electronic music label Gigante Sound. Cramp is currently producing and engineering for Borful Tang. He has an ongoing collaboration with visual/sound artist Bruce Tovsky. He has his fingers in various depths of a variety of pies around the San Francisco Bay Area. 12/30 @ 21 Grand 9pm Improvisations with Kim Cascone. Kim's website: http://www.anechoicmedia.com/ Kim Cascone has been involved with electronic music for more than 20 years since his studies at Berklee College of Music and at the New School (with Dana McCurdy) during the 1970s. In the 1980s Cascone worked with David Lynch as Assistant Music Editor on both Twin Peaks and Wild at Heart. He left the film industry in 1991 to concentrate on Silent Records, a label that he founded in 1986, transforming it into the U.S.'s premier electronic music label. He sold Silent Records in 1996, at the height of its success, in order to pursue a career as a sound designer. He has worked for Thomas Dolby's company Headspace as a sound designer and composer and for Staccato Systems where he oversaw the design of new sounds for games using algorithmic synthesis. Since 1980, Kim has released more than 15 albums of electronic music and has collaborated with Keith Rowe, Peter Rehberg, Oval, Scanner, Carsten Nicolai, Doug Aitken, and David Toop among others. He has performed at festivals in North America and Europe (Lovebytes, Micro 2 Mutek, Transmissions, Observatori) and has lectured on Post-Digital Music internationally. His articles have appeared in Computer Music Journal (MIT Press), Artbyte, Mediamatic and Parachute. DECEMBER \ LA 1/7 @ Il Corral ?pm Improvisations with David Kendall David's website: http://davidkendall.net/ David Kendall began by experimenting with multitrack recordings of degraded sound sources in the early nineties. David Kendall's focus soon shifted to feedback, as an audio phenomenon and as a general principal of recursion in the sound world: first explored in plucked string instruments, then in found objects, found electronics, found computers, and (in the present day) very expensive "top-of-the-line" computers with tons of RAM. Improvisation has always played a central role in the practice of David Kendall, and most of his performances have been in collaboration with other performers. Some of these projects are called, or were called, the invisible Music Production Ensemble, Improvisatyrs, Honeycomb Wheels, and the Kentucky Knobs. Collaborators with David Kendall include Jeremy Drake, Jessica Catron, Sandor Finta, Bob Bellerue, Bryan Eubanks, David Rothbaum, Rachel Thompson and Jonathan Zorn. David Kendall earned his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. ||||| || || |||| || | ||||| || ||| ||| | | ||||| | ||| | |||| || DIRECTIONS ||||| || || |||| || | ||||| || ||| ||| | | ||||| | ||| | |||| || SAN FRANCISCO The Hemlock Tavern 1131 Polk Street, between Post & Sutter. www.hemlocktavern.com The Luggage Store Gallery 1007 Market Street near 6th in downtown San Francisco. 415.255.5971 www.luggagestoregallery.org 21 Grand 416 25th St. Oakland, CA 94612 510.444.7263 www.21grand.org LOS ANGELES Il Corral 662 N.
