LIMITED EDITION OF 40. A FIELD FOR RECORDINGS.1 (3particles06) INFO: 1 color reverse printing on translucent vellum stock in plastic sleeve. This first release in a series of limited edition works is made with site recordings utilized for a performance at SculptureCenter in New York on March 6, 2004. Where as most of my past work has been intended for isolated headphone listening this 16:36 piece is intended for listening with environmental/incidental noise to create endless possible overlays and experiences. ONLY 4 REMAIN AVAILABLE!! OUT NOW > 2CD . Re'post'post-fabricated [ DSP Recordings, Italy ] This 2CD project will have the reformed/remastered Post-Fabricated CD (originally issued on CDR on Dutch label Microwave in 1999 as an edition of 222). I was never happy with the sound quality of the final master due to the engineer and my analog recording limitations at the time. This is an odd recording for me, which you could say is my most "pop" release in its quirky rhythmic elements. The second CD is remixes/reworkings from the original files by Frank Bretschneider, COH, Taylor Deupree, Freiband, Goem, Alva Noto, Byetone, Sogar, Asmus Tietchens, Vend, Matmos, Steve Roden, and myself (getting dubby). OUT NOW! CD . 35 Mutant Seconds: based on Rafael Toral?s Creamy Burst. [ Grain of Sound, Portugal ] features reworks using a Toral guitar piece from 1991 as source material. My piece was selected from a series of 3 improvisations. other artists include: Pita, Fonica, Sawako, John Kannenberg, Stapletape and Allto and more. i hope these will be here by the end of the week, you may pre-order on the 3particles site. a limited number of these & other releases are available via the ONLINE STORE http://www.3particles.com/paypal also there are only 4 copies of OVERVIEW available! after that,,, they are gone. - - RECENT + CURRENT STUFF - - OUT NOW > CD . "Tempt (live ending, Transmediale 2003 Berlin)" on MUTEK compilation [ Mutek_Rec, Canada ] This 2CD compilation of all of the artists from the upcoming MUTEK festival will have a very loud, very aggressive 8 minute live piece which was the end of my performance at Transmediale 2003 in Berlin which took many people by surprise. well... i was drunk and had to compete with Akufen in the main room.... wouldn't you get noisey? enjoy... this work was also recently reworked/performed in part at the DECIBEL festival last year in Seattle. Fastforwarding into the future requires spinning back through a neglected past. Today's musical fashion statements appear all the more questionable when juxtaposed with obscure & neglected waxsonics. DJing is a specific art. It aspires to (techno)turntablism. Beatmatching is not a problem to be overcome. It is the basis for all that follows; it sets the tone for skill. Turntablism is not only about the scratch, but consists of the cut, juggling, EQ, placement, timing; flow, set, movement, trajectory; conceptechnics and sonography. Turntablism is about repurposing tactile technology in an improvisational and rigorous fashion. It is about discipline and practice, attention, concentration. It prerequisites historical resampling. It loops narratology. It dreams of surreal zones of autonomous encounter .. [A little on the mixes] ? all mixes are unedited, one-take & unrehearsed (often from records recovered that day). Continuous one-hour takes feature no break between Fishead & tobias; others feature two 30 minute sets recorded the same evening. Often, a normative amount of copious drinking is involved. Fishead's favourite brews focus around the Unibroue family; tobias favours martinis, ginnantonix, sangria & wine. - tobias c. van Veen & DJ FISHEAD [ http://www.controltochaos.ca ] From omnid at optonline.net Thu Aug 4 18:49:56 2005 From: omnid at optonline.net (Al C) Date: Thu, 04 Aug 2005 18:49:56 -0400 Subject: [Microsound-announce] FW:New release @ EARLabs In-Reply-To: Message-ID: ---------- From: newssender at earlabs.org Date: Thu, 04 Aug 2005 23:23:22 +0200 To: omnid at optonline.net Subject: EARLabs personalized newsletter 4-8-2005 for the first time in 3 months a new release on Laboratoire Moderne. Both Andrew and Paul came from classical music backgrounds to form Tinkertoy in 2000 -- a project that has since evolved into a unique style of washy, sometimes melodic techno. Tinkertoys music is about the discovery of beauty in sundry noise. Their sound palette is developed through an extensive process of sampling outdoor environments and natural instruments and remodeling those samples using their own programmed software. Tinkertoy's sound is always based on experimentation, and they bring this approach to their live performances. naw - noise factory recordings / vague terrain / http://www.naw.phoniq.net Montreal native Neil Wiernik currently living in Toronto, began his explorations in electronic music making as early as 1988. Known to push the boundaries of his musical form from designing new or manipulating existing sound making devices and software to creative uses of production environments and sound sources, naw's music is a blend of sound manipulation/design, experimental musics and dub-tech rhythms, which on the surface sound quite simple, but incorporate a number of touches that steer this artist away from being simply another minimal techno or experimental laptop artist. He combines post-house, dubby minimal techno, microsound and thick ambience, to create his own version of deep techno, house and other electronic laptop oriented musics. Neil has released music on various national and international record labels, including releases on Noise Factory, Complot, Clevermusic, Piehead and Pertin_nce. As naw, Neil has performed extensively along side a variety of national and international artists both in and outside of Canada. In 2004 and 2005 naw will released his follow up noise factory record full length called: "green nights orange days", as well as a full length outing with Pertin_nce Records called: "terrain vague". These two records find Neil at his deepest, dubbiest and most experimental sounding yet. The release of these records will coincide with a series of North American and European tour dates through out 2005. aidan baker - http://www.aidanbaker.org Aidan Baker is a Toronto-based musician and writer. As a solo artist, he explores the deconstructive possibilities of the electric guitar creating music that ranges from &/or encompasses ambient/experimental to electronica to post-rock. He has released numerous albums on such labels as Drone Records, Piehead Records, Zunior Records, & Die Stadt Musick. ================================ www.vagueterrain.net From simon at symbiosis.com.au Sun Aug 7 07:13:59 2005 From: simon at symbiosis.com.au (Simon Hampson) Date: Sun, 7 Aug 2005 21:13:59 +1000 Subject: [Microsound-announce] Symbiosis Playlist - 31/7/05 (Taalem Records) Message-ID: <000301c59b41$1c736030$2700000a@u8nykmn3x> Symbiosis - Experimental Sound Textures and Rhythms [Headphones recommended] 12am - 2am Sunday nights 102.7 FM, Melbourne, Australia Listen online: http://www.rrr.org.au/symbiosis/ Time Zone Converter: http://worldtimeserver.com/ Work out what time the show airs for you here: http://tinyurl.com/cjb8g Symbiosis c/o Triple R PO Box 2145 Brunswick East 3057 Victoria Australia info at symbiosis.com.au presented by Simon Hampson -------show highlights---------------------- 7th August: Zen Paradox (Steve Law) has a new album out through EEM (http://eem.i2pi.com/), 'Numinosum'. In the pipeline: Christopher DeLaurenti, Xing Wu Records, Sirr.ecords -------------------------------------------- Hi everyone, Only 2 weeks until I go overseas! It's hard for me to believe it. I finally got some nice binaurals so I hope to get a few good recordings whilst I am on holiday. Picked up a few Retinascan releases and sent Greg Davis an order for some more of his 'Leaves' series (Lawrence English, my guest next week, and UK artist Dallas Simpson have been included recently) so these will be coming up on the show. Speaking of new releases, thanks for all the recent cds. I am writing reviews again and working on a website for Symbiosis so keep them coming! The return of the label feature on last week's show had a good reaction. Thank you to Jean-Marc from Taalem for all his help. The August feature will take place on next week's show because of my holiday. Two in 3 weeks! Next week the lens turns to Brisbane label, Room40. So much has happened for the label in 2005; for example, Tujiko Noriko is playing shows around the country to celebrate her new cd on the label. Check the website for more details: www.room40.org Back to tonight though.. Steve Law joins me to chat about his new cd under the name Zen Paradox on EEM. Steve's performance on Symbiosis was a highlight last year. It will be interesting to hear a performance along the melodic lines of this release. American composer & and/OAR curator Dale Lloyd was invited to have work released on label Con-v; but instead of a solo release, he chose to invite some friends to make it a collaboration release. The end result features eleven different collaborations, produced and arranged by Dale Lloyd. In spite of the tracktitles' allusion to the periodic table, this release represents in no way an analytic science - rather a creative one, deeply infused with the alchemists spirit. Adding very little as far as sound sources go, the creative proces involves mainly processing & editing of the source sounds delivered by a range of collaborators. The result, albeit an amalgam of distinctive sonic perspectives, is an aural entity of a wholly integral kind: a set of sonified objects of a meta-organic nature, cohering as a parallel but antithetical universe to that of the analytical & materialistic mind-set of the standard table of the elements. Artists featured: Robert Horton , Nathan McNinch , Omnid , Ben Owen , Josh Russell , Stuart Dodman , Ubeboet , Scott Taylor , Heribert Friedl , K.M. This year's impressive line-up features both respected pioneers and emerging artists whose work spans the sonic spectra -- from ambient to rhythmic, from atonal to melodic. As the only San Francisco music festival dedicated solely to electronic music, the SFEMF brings together the varied practices of artists working with laptop generated sound, processed live acoustic instruments, amplified found objects, projected video, improvisation, and performance art. For this year's festival, SFEMF has invited three New York-based visiting composers, including renowned trombonist/improviser, electronic music composer, and MacArthur Fellowship recipient George Lewis (performing new work on his custom software); electronics pioneer Morton Subotnick (performing a piece from his ongoing series "Gestures," which involves a laptop and a 6.1 surround sound system); and Zeena Parkins, a pioneer of the electric harp who describes her harp as a "sound machine of limitless capacity" and who is respected for her repertoire of experimental playing techniques. SFEMF 2005's local artists include vocal and electronics duo Chaos Butterfly, composer/soundscape architect gal* in_dog (AKA Guillermo Galindo), prepared Fender Rhodes piano artist Eric Glick Rieman, mechanical sound installation artist Matt Heckert, pioneer computer network ensemble The Hub, harp and electronics composer Victoria Jordanova, laptop and video artist Blevin Blectum, gesture controller and laptop artist Patrice Scanlon, and experimental techno artist Sutekh. It's a show of no fixed format (leaning obviously (but not exclusively) towards electronic and experimental music) to serve the following purposes: 1) Provide myself and others with a "virtual venue" in which to perform 2) Play cool music and pretend to be a DJ. This first episode is somewhere in between the two, a live mix of a couple of live performances and some other material I've had spinning around on the old harddrive. The next installment is planned to be a tribute to the late Koji Tano, aka MSBR who passed away last week. In the meantime, if you or anyone you know has any music, field recording or other audio scrap they'd be willing to air out on a random podcast, make sure to let me know! I'm scouring the web now for any nice sounds I can get my hands on. If anyone wants to record or donate a live set to fulfill purpose 1, that would be really, really nice. One caveat is that in the spirit of experimentation, I have encoded this first episode with the new AAC format for iTunes that allows for bookmarking, chapter breaks and the like. I'm not totally committed to staying in that format, but for now you'll need iTunes to listen. If this cheeses you off because you think iTunes is the devil, let me know. The last few months has been very busy for the show and tonight wraps things up in a nice way! The August label feature focuses on Room40. Room40 is a Brisbane-based imprint that was started by Lawrence English in 2000. This year has seen a true 'coming-of-age' for the label side of things with releases by Tujiko Noriko (JP) and Chris Abrahams (The Necks). Alongside these established artists there have been some great Australian artists making their early forays into official releases; Rod Cooper and Matt Rosner have been personal highlights. So until 25th September, I hope you all stay safe, warm and well. I will be returning with some great content and features later in the year. Of course, Symbiosis will be well cared for in the meantime by Mark Harwood and Pat O'Brien. until next time, Simon. **Please note the new Brunswick address above** -------Playlist----------------------------- Show Date: 7/8/05 Zen Paradox (Steve Law) has a new album out through EEM (http://eem.i2pi.com/), 'Numinosum'. Kyle Bruckmann - oboe / Jeff Gburek - prepared guitar, electronics With a history of conservatory training gone awry, oboist and electronic musician Kyle Bruckmann combines the rigorous discipline of a classical foundation with raucous sensibilities more indebted to punk?s aftermath in a dizzying variety of artistic endeavors. He has recently relocated to San Francisco from Chicago, where since 1996 he had been a fixture in the thriving local experimental music underground. While teaching and free-lancing extensively as an orchestral musician, he collaborated regularly with many of the city's most creative improvisers and sound artists, including Jim Baker, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jeb Bishop, Michael Zerang, Guillermo Gregorio, Scott Rosenberg, Bob Marsh, and Olivia Block. Adventures on the road have brought him into contact with the likes of Polwechsel, Bhob Rainey, Greg Kelley, Jack Wright, Guiseppe Ielasi, Boris Hauf, Larry Marotta, Djalma Primordial Science, and L.A.?s linespaceline collective. As a member of sfSound and Gene Coleman's Ensemble Noamnesia, he has performed works by composers including Berio, Cage, Cardew, Crumb, Goldstein, Ives, Penderecki, Sciarrino, Stockhausen, Webern, Xenakis, and Yoshihide. Info: www.barelyauditable.com/bruckmannindex.html Jeff Gburek has been playing guitars for 30 years, performing throughout Western Europe and the USA. He employs traditional & prepared guitar techniques, signal processing and field recordings, drawing on the processes of musique concrete, free improvisation and indeterminate composition. For 7 years he has worked with movement artist Ephia in Djalma Primordial Science, evolving a praxis of body and sound through performance and pedagogy. Other projects include the Berlin-based electro-acoustic trio ZYGOMA with percussionist Michael Vorfeld and sampling by Michael Walz, appearances with Konrad Bauer, Keith Rowe, Daniel Carter and more recently Kyle Bruckamnn, Tom Carter (Charalambides) and Tetuzi Akiyama. info: www.djalma.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? "I got off the sight seeing bus near the ruins to the church of anthrax. I thought I heard a pounding piano and a repeating organ riff but it was only the wind. I listened to it blow for a while. Hannu asked me for some kind of description of the music on this cdr. Shit, I don't know. I woke up one night recently and scribbled "free jazz haunted drone" on the cover of the latest Wire. When I woke that morning, it seemed like a good description. The collection got its name from Brad Rose, who seems to be quite poetic. I also took him literally and threw some broken binaural microphones into the bathtub to record some feedback from underwater, thus washed out headspace. Misty Leader was the name of a horse running at the track in Tacoma, Washington. Wes McIntosh, who is into the horses, found me the name in the paper. He's my nephew and is 16 years old and open minded enough to join me with his sax in the backyard for a drone-a drone with his weird uncle playing guitar with a vibrator with a bobby pin duck-taped to it." robert horton: boot, guitar, dulcimer organ, dulcimer, casio fz-1, casio mt-68, trumpet, sine wave generator, feedback circuit, radio, cassettes, mini disc, varispeed cassette recorder, computer, el flosser, turntable-boot-hurdy-gurdy, reel to reel tape bow, vitaminder, vibrator, percussion, drums, instratuner, wooden trumpet, contact mics, rocks, zither, shenai, rubber bands wes mcintosh: tenor sax on track 2 boot is a 4 string homemade track 3 named by brad rose LINKS: www.hoalrecords.com REVIEWS: "beautifully luxuriant drones as vibrant and joyous as a sunrise - Horton is joined by saxophonist Wes Montgomery on this release" Boa Melody Bar talented artist, features an insert. edition of 100 copies. also lots of old titles available (but some 3"cdr's are temporarily sold out). more info: http://www.dlc.fi/~hhaahti/267lattajjaa/releases.html best wishes, hannu. In any event, and/OAR is pleased to finally announce the second release in the long neglected "and/live" series: TOBIAS C. VAN VEEN & TOMAS PHILLIPS: If Not, Winter This release features 3 short solo performances by tobias c. van Veen and 1 long collaborative performance between van Veen and tomas phillips. The solo tracks by van Veen often display slow brooding shifts of indistinct shadings and lower register drones, while the collaboration between van Veen and phillips is more varied; effortlessly traversing from one hue of soundscape to another, although not veering too far away from the seemingly established foundations of mood set forth by the first two solo tracks of van Veen. Sound samples can be found here: http://www.and-oar.org/pop_and_live2.html [tobias c. van Veen] is a renegade theorist & pirate, techno-turntablist & writer based in Montreal. I am doing well and making new pieces. Soon I will go to Amsterdam for a residency at STEIM. There are not too many concerts just now but we start up again in September: France (including a performance in the chapel where Antonin Artaud, ironically enough, took catholic services in Rodez), Spain, Denmark, Berlin etc. But this summer pause allows me to bring the record label ORPHAN SOUND up to date. I actually have 5 new releases. The titles are a follows. REALISM AND THE REVOLUTION IN RECORDED SOUND: turntables, microcassettes, macerated guitars, looped mixing board and damaged sound card by Jeff Gburek. (This will also be released in a remastered version by Lee Kwang Goh in September, as well a split CD (Jeff Gburek/Lee Kawng Goh) of my extremely raw "Akustik Guitar" recorded this past June here in Kreuzberg). ENTLARVUNG: materials and score for realization of non-conclusive sound environment: sine waves + signal processing by Jeff Gburek. 2 CDR set with explanatory notes. (Some of you may have the 2-channel mix-down version of this. I have since decided that it is more of a squash than a real mix, so I am issuing it in a manner that allows for its full reception in 4 channels, not as a "commercial" CD but as sound files for realization of an installation using common playback devices. Please let me know if you have questions about that.) STUNG BY HEURTEBISE: sound mirrors, electric guitars + laptop processsing by Heurtebise MYOPIA: THE SECRET BOXCARS OF PUBESCENCE: live performance DVD by Djalma Primordials Science: unsound body by Ephia and sound by Jeff Gburek from live performance, Amsterdam 2004 PHYSICAL ADDRESS: field recordings, object resonance, guitars + electronic and digital treatments by Jeff Gburek with contributions of prepared speaker feedback by Anders Dahl To round the update, Kyle Bruckmann was just in Berlin and our live set was well recorded and it will be likely that we release something culled from our live sets over the last two years of episodically collaborating. ZYGOMA (Michael Vorfeld, perc. & Michael Walz, sampling + me) has recorded at Audio Cue and if/when all trio members are simultaneously in Berlin, we are editing and mastering toward eventual release. Djalma Primordial Science is making semi-daily spontaneous appearances in Berlin underground as part of the "PHYSICAL ADDRESS" process. Djalma Primordial Science will be in NYC in November and we hope also to go to Boston, any lead-ins there appreciated. Check website for details: www.djalma.com And that is nuff said for now. ================================ www.vagueterrain.net From sirr-ecords at sirr-ecords.com Wed Aug 24 11:52:29 2005 From: sirr-ecords at sirr-ecords.com (paulo raposo||sirr) Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2005 16:52:29 +0100 Subject: [Microsound-announce] sirr news 23082005 Message-ID: Hello to all, And we hope you're having a nice summer (or winter). Thompson's prepared mind allowed him to capture one of the most moving pieces of sound you are likely to experience this year. It must be heard to be believed Artist Statement This piece uses sounds drawn from a field recording made only a few meters from my home off the north sea in the small Scottish fishing village of Footdee. Wind blowing through the unfinished structure of the new harbor tower created an aeolian harp that resonated across the village. Isolating these sounds from the gusts of wind and sea, I tried to create a piece that flowed as pure and natural as the original recording. hints of wind and sea are still evident, but now with a slightly removed, alien timbre. Extreme noise reduction and equalization were used on the sounds, but otherwise no additional processing was employed. Bio Bill Thompson is a sound artist living in the north east of Scotland. Formerly of Texas where he was active in the Austin experimental music scene, he now spends his time recording buildings, boats and clay pots while hoping this will somehow count towards his pending PhD. - tobias c. van Veen & DJ FISHEAD [ http://www.controltochaos.ca ] From neil at phoniq.net Sat Aug 27 13:44:56 2005 From: neil at phoniq.net (Neil Wiernik) Date: Sat, 27 Aug 2005 13:44:56 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Microsound-announce] vague terrain thanks you Message-ID: <20050827134438.G15174@nocturne.dreaming.org> we want to thank every one that came out and supported to help make our first vague terrain event such a huge success, we appoligize to any one that could not get in we went well over the capasity of the space and tried our best to accomidate any one that came to the door. next event is sept 24th with granny'ark [vancouver, zora lanson], akumu [spider records], naw [noise factory/vague terrain] and video by patricia rodriguez same location the gladstone-art bar 1214 queen street west 9pm start time, 5 dollars gets you in limited capasity. www.vagueterrain.net for more details. thanks for comming out and we hope to see you and your friends in 4 weeks time. ================================ naw/neil wiernik neil at phoniq.net artist site: www.naw.phoniq.net releases available on: www.noisefactoryrecords.com www.pertin-nce.com my projects: www.vagueterrain.net www.phoniq.net From chartier at 3particles.com Sat Aug 27 23:02:16 2005 From: chartier at 3particles.com (richard chartier / LINE) Date: Sat, 27 Aug 2005 23:02:16 -0400 Subject: [Microsound-announce] [LINE] new release STEVE RODEN 'AIRFORMS' LINE022 Message-ID: <7d19b97280aadf6ab7475dc2a8f9bbe2@3particles.com> LINE PRESENTS: NEW RELEASE: artist: CHESS MACHINE (richard chartier + ivan pavlov (coh)) title: LIVE IN LOS ANGELES cat.no: LINE023 edition: 600 packaging: new LINE packaging, 5" 4 color process printed sleeves w/ shrinkwrap SHIPPING SEPTEMBER 1ST http://www.12k.com/line LINE is proud to present Live in Los Angeles by the collaborative performance project CHESSMACHINE by Richard Chartier (US) and Ivan Pavlov (aka COH) (RUS). An unusual release for LINE, CHESSMACHINE's live sound is alternately loud and quiet, mysterious and genuinely unsettling. A certain humor shapes the conceptual dialectics of the CHESSMACHINE live experience. Their interplay suggests the historical confrontation of East and West; an austere and chilling tete-a-tete over the chessboard that reconstructs the somber milieu of a bygone Europe, even as it conveys a kind of absurdist levity through the rehearsed performance of these roles. The use of MAC and PC computer operating systems by Chartier and Pavlov, respectively, becomes the late-20th century manifestation of classic Cold War combatants. Through their engagement, a process of sonic and aesthetic displacement unfolds, such that one player?s strategic manipulation of sound begins slowly to affect and then determinatively shape the compositional technique of the other. CHESSMACHINE?s live performances take place in real time with color coded staging, uniforms, lighting, and video projections designed by Russian-American installation/video artists Evelyn Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand. This live recording of Chessmachine took place on February 25, 2005 at REDCAT in Los Angeles. The performance was presented by the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) as part of Visual Music: SEE HEAR NOW!, an experimental music series investigating the synaesthetic resonance between contemporary music and visual art, in conjunction with their exhibit Visual Music. Upcoming performances in 2005 include: Belgrade, Valencia, Brussels, and Dresden. IVAN PAVLOV is a former acoustic engineer from Russia, currently resident in Sweden who has been releasing his work under the name COH (Russian for ?sleep? and ?dream?) through various record labels including Raster-Noton (DE), Mego (A), Eskaton (UK), souRce-reSearch (UK), IDEA (USA), Wavetrap (UK/SE), Staalplaat (NL) and Error (RU). His work is distinguished by the somewhat emphasized emotional content of the sound forms as well as a certain level of humor in both concepts and execution. He has collaborated with artists Coil, Cylobe, Annie Anxiety, and Richard Chartier. COH has performed at numerous festivals/events across Europe and North America including 20 to 2000 (Volksbeuhne, Berlin), ARS Festival (Linz, Austria), Rotterdam International Film Festival, MUTEK (Montreal, Canada), Frequenzen/Shirn Kunshalle (Frankfurt, Germany), Wien Modern Festival (Vienna, Austria), and Acces(s) (Pau, France). His digital minimalist work explores the inter-relationships between the spatial nature of sound, silence, focus, and the act of listening. Chartier?s sound works and sound installations have been presented internationally including at the exhibits Sounding Spaces at ICC (Tokyo, Japan), I Moderni / The Moderns at Castello di Rivoli (Torino, Italy), 2002 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art (NY), Resynthesis at The Art Institute of Chicago, as well as solo and collaborative installations for Fusebox (DC) and Diapason (NY). Airforms was first presented at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art [ Scottsdale, Arizona ] in April of 2004. The work was inspired by a group of experimental houses designed by Wallace Neff in the 1940?s using a process he called airform construction. The houses were built by spraying concrete over an inflated balloon structure. Inspired by the nautilus sea shell, the houses were an investigation into the aesthetic possibilities of structures formed by air, and the psychological effects of living inside a kind of organic space. The installation attempted to reflect Neff?s ideas in the use of air as an inspirational skeleton and physical presence in the construction of the forms as well as the audio. Five objects were built by laying plaster over small balloons. The sound work was created using the transformed sound of a breath blown through an old wooden organ pipe. Both essentially built from Roden?s own breath. The original multi-channel audio work consisted of five small speakers, each placed within a single plaster form. The version for this cd has been re-organized for stereo listening. The lack of narrative structure attempts to create an audio space in line with Neff?s architectural interests in the airform projects. Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist from Los Angeles. His work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, film/video, and sound installation. Roden?s involve a combination of conceptual strategies and intuitive movements. Found structures are lifted from their original intentions and combined with invented systems to be used as the basis for improvisation and abstraction. In the visual works, printed language, graphic design, maps, and other forms of specific visual notation are sent through various self invented systems of translation to create open readings and new meanings. In the sound works, singular source materials such as objects, architectural spaces, and field recordings, are abstracted through electronics to create new audio spaces, or ?possible landscapes.? The sound works present themselves with an aesthetic roden describes as ?lower case?? - sound concerned with subtlety and the quiet activity of listening. The LA Weekly recently called Roden ?the most idiosyncratic abstract painter to emerge from LA in the 90?s?; while The Wire magazine recently referred to Roden?s cd the radio as ?a particularly modest form of genius?. Roden has been exhibiting his visual and sound works since 1986 in numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally, including museums, galleries and arts spaces in USA, EU and Japan. Recent shows include the Stadt Galerie Museum (Saarbrucken, Germany), San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami Museum of Contemporary Art, UCLA Armand Hammer Museum & the Mak Center for Art and Architecture los angeles, the drawing center, nyc; susanne vielmetter la projects (LA), Jennjoy Gallery (SF), Kunsthallen Brandts Klaedefabrik (Odense, Denmark), Podewil (Berlin, Germany) and many others. Roden has performed live improvised soundscapes in arts spaces, galleries, museums, theatres, and alternative spaces worldwide including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the ICA & the Hayward Gallery (London, UK) MIT (Boston), The Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), and The Musee de Beaux Artes (Nantes, France) as well as performance tours of Brazil and Japan and music/art festivals around the globe. Roden has released cd?s of his sound works under his own name, as well as under the name ?in be tween noise?on labels include Trente Oiseaux (Germany), Sonoris (France), GMBH (France), Digital Narcis and Meme (Japan), and LINE (US). Dates and venues will be announced soon, but this mail is to find some interesting contacts in Brasil for sound exchange. So, could anyone in SP, Rio or other cities in the area who is interested in electronic or acoustic improvisational, non-beat-oriented music please get in touch with me offlist? We'd love to meet you while we are down there! best, derek resonanCITY: Many sounds and images in our everyday lives slip past our notice simply because they are too small, or because we lack the proper receivers to pick them up. 'resonanCITY' is an ongoing project to gather these microscopic sights and sounds from various cities, and to amplify and transform them. The goal is to build a new city inside the old one, and to inspire curiosity and exploration of one's own environment. Both artists find inspiration in the history of experimental cinema and electroacoustic music, as well as in contemporary video and microsound practices, and a variety of live sources such as photographic film and found objects are used to generate the visions and sounds. Visually, Kolster?s work deconstructs the analog/digital divide by presenting carefully prepared film positives in a software-manipulated environment. Similarly, Holzer?s realtime digital sound treatments highlight and enhance rather than obscure and distort the phonographic and electroacoustic sources he collects. Kolster and Holzer also reject the use of common, commercial production methods and the default, commercial artworks that these methods often produce, preferring instead to program their own software, build their own hardware interfaces and actively participate in the free and open source communities which surround these activities. ?resonanCITY? has been performed live in Holland, Brasil, the Baltic States and at the Transmediale 05 in Berlin. ?resonanCITY? also took the Second Prize at the 11th International WRO Media Art Biennale in Wroclaw, Poland in May 2005. -- derek holzer ::: http://www.umatic.nl ---Oblique Strategy # 169: "Use filters" From a.ludovico at neural.it Tue Aug 30 02:59:53 2005 From: a.ludovico at neural.it (Alessandro Ludovico) Date: Tue, 30 Aug 2005 08:59:53 +0200 Subject: [Microsound-announce] Interferenze_05, new arts festival Message-ID: Interferenze, the contemporary arts festival is an international and interdisciplinary event organized by the cultural association Interzona. Interzona is interested in connections between and interactions among multimedia, screen-based arts, sound, technology, and society. Interferenze is a meeting point for visitors, artists, and Italian and European arts critics. Through collaboration among research institutes, local, national, and international authorities, this event aims to create a synergy of thought among different disciplines in the fields of multimedia arts and digital technologies. Interferenze 2005 will be located in San Martino Valle Caudina (Avellino - Italy) over the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of September. The focus of this year's festival will be: "Noises, Images, and Countryside Bits". With three days of electronic sounds, new media arts, and cultural events, visitors will have an introduction to the territory of Valle Caudina, its values and its openness to new arts in the rural scenery of Capofiume/Ex-Windmill. This year, Interferenze rediscovers its twofold soul, bridging digital provocation and the call of tradition.
