The Mobile Digital Commons Network (MDCN) connects those members of the
academy, the arts and industry whose work revolves around mobile,
wireless, and digital technologies in Canada. Funded by Canadian
Heritage, our goals are threefold: to facilitate interdisciplinary
research; to foster cultural production and public participation; and to
develop forward-thinking policy on wireless technologies.

Hosted by the MDCN, this symposium examines the impact of mobile culture
and the evolving idea of a wireless commons. Over the course of four
days, we will investigate how wireless technologies enrich and modify
public life in Canada, challenge our notions of space and place, and
shape our day-to-day experiences.

Leading researchers, scholars and artists from around the world have
been invited to present their cutting edge work in these fields and
contribute to an ongoing discussion on these subjects. This event will
also serve as a public unveiling of the projects that constitute the
launch of the MDCN.

This panel explores how artists' use of mobile technologies opens up a
whole new medium of creative expression. Not least, it allows them to
experiment with shifting notions of space and place, and to explore the
kinds of social interactions that can emerge as a result.

Chair: Will Straw

The digital city has emerged in the last two decades as a significant
phenomenon impacting how we understand urban life. Traversed by the flow
of communications, the city is re-ordered by technological systems and
networks that, in their totality, constitute a considerable digital
architecture. How do we theorize this parallel urban space? What are the
roles of human and non-human actors in its construction? This panel
investigates the potential of these networks to create new 'public'
spaces in the digital city.

3:45 - 5:30 PM: Participatory Design/Le design participatif

This panel explores those characteristics of new media network culture
that point towards collaboration, community participation, and the
evolving role of the user from traditional spectator to active
participant. In these environments, participants modify technologies to
suit their purposes. In so doing, they reconfigure conceptions of the
developer, designer and author. Engaging with working methodologies such
as brain and body storms and iterative design, this panel provides
insights into how cross-disciplinary teams can work together.

Chair: Marc Tuters

In providing a public wireless infrastructure, WiFi networks have been
described as both community building tools and as revolutionary
political practices. In this panel, wireless advocates discuss the
particular challenges they face in creating community networks as they
pursue their vision of 'free' wireless access.

Chair: Andrew Herman

Internet and wireless technologies have been heralded by some as
democraticizing tools, but in the context of national and international
regulatory bodies and emerging copyright and intellectual property
issues, just how democratic are they? In grappling with this question,
panelists suggest how the digital might be better used to facilitate
democracy.

'Smart mobs' and 'thumb tribes' are terms that are being used to

narratives.
